They have kept my yellow pages advertising expense under control. DAI staff are very helpful and understanding. I know I am not the best client because I am always behind. DAI staff never get irritated when they have to remind me more than once to return the information they have provided me on a yellow pages order. Ive been very satisfied with Directory Assistants Inc. Before using DAI I did not know I could negotiate a better rate or that it was not really necessary to run a large 1/2 or full page ad like my competitors were running. DAI has also freed me from constantly being bombarded with requests for yellow pages advertising from the many, many yellow pages vendors in my area. It is so nice to be able to refer these sales people to DAI. They have kept my yellow pages advertising expense under control. DAI staff are very helpful and understanding. I have always been a very hard nosed negotiator when it comes to YP. Every year Id start by slashing the marketers recommended renewal pricing to impossible low rates, then threaten over and over to pull out of their directory. Every contract required upper level approval and lots of back-and-forth and enduring the YP marketer hints that my business will not succeed if I dont renew. I was always effective at getting great pricing through it all. That being said, I hated doing it. I hated the long meetings and the battles. I didnt hire DAI because I thought they could get me better pricing, I hired them because I wanted somebody else to deal with the constant onslaught of YP marketers. My business operates in several different markets with lots of publications in each region. One thing DAI has done that I didnt expect is to give me the confidence to pull out of some directories based on consumer use and real distribution information. Yes, DAI has an incentive for me to pull out because it means they can bill me more for "saving" me money, but at the end of the day if they hadnt talked me into pulling out Id be paying a lot more to useless (or very little use) YP ads. So, its still a savings to me. And its not unexpected; their contract was very clear and easy to understand, and they were upfront and honest about how it worked. And, ultimately, Ive saved myself probably 100+ hours per year dealing with the marketers in our various geographic regions. I love when they call me now because I just tell them "heres Peggys number, call her". Theyll try and tell me theyll give me a better rate then theyll give DAI and I try and be polite and kind when I tell them my experience reflects the exact opposite. So the question: When I renew am I paying less through DAI than when I did my own negotiating? Maybe a little. But Im definitely not paying more. And I am saving LOTS and LOTS of time and brain damage. At essentially no cost to me. And I do save when I finally have good data justifying pulling out of a particular book. Makes it a great deal.

Be VERY careful when signing a contract with DAI. I have been paying them large sums of money for "savings" they negotiated from my yellow page advertising for going on 4 years. On my own (without the aid of DAI) I would have begun to shift money from yellow page advertising to web advertising 3 years ago and been able to work within the same ad budget. But because they bill me a percentage of all reduction in spending with yellow page advertising, I have had to increase my budget to cover their large bills while shifting money from YP advertising to Web advertising. Even when I initiate the changes in my YP advertising - -they still take the credit for the savings and charge me a percentage. If I knew then what I know now I would NEVER have signed a 4 year contract. So I simply advise that you proceed with caution. Your bill with DAI will never go down -- it will stay the same or go up for the duration of your contract. Sort of feel like Im back to dealing with the Yellow Page folks again. 10/01 Update. Michael Cody contacted me after I made the above post, and he has worked diligently to finalize our final book, and he provided a discount to offset what the normal cost would have been. He provided excellent customer service, and went beyond just addressing my complaint. He reviewed some of our online listings and made some suggestions on how to clean up some erroneous information. He offered to do it for me, but I have someone who manages our web marketing and SEO, so I just passed the information on to him and he fixed it. Bottom line -- I voiced a complaint and rather than receive the silent treatment -- Mr. Cody reached out and provided excellent service and follow up. It was nice to end things on a more positive note.
