UPDATE: Its been six months since my mother passed. Today, I contacted the burial establishment for the deed to the plot. I learned that the deed was sent to Cotton a month after my mothers burial. To date, I have yet to receive it. This highlights the incompetence of Cottons administrative staff and their failure to follow through. At this point, Im wondering how long it will take a manager to return my call. I am furious! My mother passed away last month so I decided to use Cotton Funeral Service because it was on the top ten list of funeral homes in Essex County. Cotton did a wonderful job in every aspect of the funeral preparation, except administratively. The person who assisted my family and I did an absolute terrible job from administrative tasks to customer service. For example, in preparing the prayer cards and obituary/order of service, every time I contacted her with corrections, I would get the document back without the requested corrections. In addition, she failed to return 50% of my phone calls as well as complete claim forms for my siblings and I to receive the balance of the insurance proceeds. I may use Cotton for future services only if a more efficient representative assists me.

Initially, I was impressed by their professionalism. As events transpired, I realized that their administrative processes are less than desirable (no published fax number-Newark location). While everyone tried to rectify the situation, I felt that the bandages only covered the wounds. There was no checks and balances system in place to ensure that minor details were followed. The funeral home was instrumental in teaching me about funeral etiquette. I learned a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. My former in-laws have used Cotton throughout the years, and we plan to use them again. If you have specific plans for your funeral, I would suggest that you have them WRITTEN out. This would minimize administrative mistakes. I am grateful that we all were able to bury my former husband without incident. Cotton Funeral Services did a great job with his body, and the burial was fantastic. May André Brown continue to rest in peace.

My experience with cotton was a disliked. Instructions was given as to how I wanted my belated mother to be growmed. Her hair was to be wear down, no polish on her nails, no lipstick. Well, when I went for the final viewing everything were Wong. Her hair was in a bun, dark lipstick on her lips and nail polish on her nails. When I asked I was told that it was a miscommunication. We had to sit in that room for 45 minutes waiting while they redo her hair. Of course it would never be a miscommunication regarding there rates right. If that was not enough I only ordered 100 of those cards that you hands out they return more than 40 of them to me. What Am I supposed to do with them? This was an experience I will never forget. While people in my community are using Island funeral service I definitely regret not using their services. I would not recommend cotton to anyone.

Dont let the negative reviews stop you from using their services like I almost did. Everyone from the receptionist to the driver of the hearse, Ozzie, left an impression on me. The funeral director, Mr. Muhammad, didnt try to talk me into getting anymore than the direct cremation I requested. He patiently listened to me reflect on my mom and even threw in a few "amens". She was groomed prior to the final viewing and looked beautiful. The administrative ladies that helped me with the fine details as well as collecting her remains were extraordinary in easing my pain and sharing their own experiences. The professionalism and compassion at this facility made it a five-star experience for me.

Cotton Funeral Services did a nice job with my husbands service. However the administrative services were terrible. The death certificate was incorrect. They were supposed to have it corrected. They did not. I had to go to the township myself and PAY for corrected certificates. Cotton promised to reimburse me (they did not) and it has been six months. Cotton also sent me a very nice memento of the service in which a lot of the information was incorrect. I have called and emailed but no response. I am very disappointed that they made an already difficult situation worse.

Horrible! Do not allow Cotton Funeral Services to deal with your loved ones.The owner and staff are extremely unprofessional. They broke the law and directly violated my fathers wishes. PLEASE save your family stress and heartache and call a funeral home that will treat your loved one with respect and care.

Personally, I was upset by the flip flopping with the prices. Service rendered was excellent but final cost was different from what was quoted initially. Took almost 6 weeks to obtain a refund that was due.
