After just moving to Manhattan, I was in a panicked state when I noticed my outgrowing mousey brown roots and gross split ends. I needed to find a place that was cheap, good and professional. Thankfully, a friend recommended the Jean Ferre Salon on 14th Street. First, let me say what a WONDERFUL experience I had!!! I walked in without an appointment thinking there would probably be a wait and a eye-rolling receptionist to deal with. NOPE. I was graciously greeted at the door by not only a friendly receptionist but the owner as well. A little on the hasty side I will admit, he hurried me into the back area where I was to meet Matthew -- the leading stylist (my friend told me to try him). Within minutes of meeting him, I knew I was in good hands. He was consistently friendly and noticeably passionate about his job. As we spit back ideas for my color/cut back and forth it became apparent that Matthew is no amateur at the salon game. I mentioned wanting reddish ombre highlights and a trim and without haste, Matthew began proposing colors. ideas and procedures that would not only give me the look I desired, but would fit my budget as well. He definitely isnt one of those stylists who shmooze you into a ton of procedures only to deal with a $200+ check at the end of your visit. A what I thought routine and quick visit to the salon soon turned into a bonafide beauty exyravaganza with Matthew being nice enough to not only reduce the price of my ombre color/cut, but by throwing in additional services FOR FREE!!!!! In the end I received a glossing treatment to balance out my overall hair color, a deep conditioning treatment, ombre highlights, and a cut for....ready?....$125!!!!!!! Dudes, that is a friggen steal in New York. And to top it all off, the quality of the services were superb! By far the best Ive had. My ombre highlights look like someone in a fancy Madison Avenue salon did them. They are so even and subtle and my hair feels great from the cut and extra conditioning!!! I cant even begin to tell you the compliments I got walking down the street. If you want good services to fit a low budget definitely go to the Jean Frerre Salon and see Matthew. Its SO worth it!!!

I had a terrible experience here. I went in wanting to keep my length, but do something a little different with the cut. My stylist spend 15 minutes trying to tell me to cut 6 inches off despite me saying I like my length. She said "your hair will stay boring if you keep it this length...if you dont want to cut it off just dye it" Eventually, she got to cutting and instead of the 1-2 inches I requested, she took off 4...kind of. One side was and inch and a half longer than the other. I got a headshot done for work the next day and I was too embarrassed to keep it because it was so obvious my hair was uneven. I just got it re-cut by someone else who said there was a remarkable difference in length at various points on my head. Overall TERRIBLE experience...worst haircut Ive ever gotten....worse than my Walmart haircuts

If youre a man, this is NOT the place to go... Sadly, this was the worst haircut Ive ever received in Manhattan, or anywhere for the matter. Efi was both discourteous and unskilled. I could dismiss the hairdressers curt demeanor and interest with his cellphone call more than my hair (hard to navigate both at once, I gather). When he completed the work in under six minutes, I knew he was either a genius and his bedside manners would be soon forgiven, or he was a disaster. Well I need say no more, as I am utterly appalled with the result. Ill soon be visiting my regular hairdresser to fix the butchered job.

Ive been going to this salon for over two years now and have gotten to know almost half of the people working there. Its a very friendly atmosphere. Coming here every six weeks for my hair color treatment, I feel like Im visiting a second home. Every time, I leave, I feel like a million bucks because of the professional way they keep my platinum blonde hair in pristine shape. Truly, every time I walk out of the salon I get compliments on the street. After finding this salon, for the value and service, I wouldnt ever consider finding a new place. I highly recommend trying this hidden gem off Union Square.

I came here for the first time back in October, with a coupon deal for highlights and a cut, Matt was my stylist... He did a wonderful job!!! I just LOVE my highlights and low lights!!! He gave me a lot of advice about how we can keep the blond I want and keep my hair healthy! I have since been coming to this salon! The people that work there are nice, I love that the owner is always there and even helps the stylists wash hair and take out foil!! Its wonderful coming into a salon where people know who you are and treat you with great care!

I cant even give this place one star!!! I am not from New York, but have had to be here for about a month and half now. It was time for a haircut and I figured I could just get it done here. I didnt want to pay $100 bucks though. While this place is cheap ( I think I paid $30 bucks including tip) my hair is awful! I had a short cut bob and with a bob you need maintenance. Thats all I wanted was a little trim and the lady cut my hair so short I cant even fit in a pony tail! I cried the whole way home.

I dropped in one day 2 years ago because it is close to work and have been coming ever since. Expert hair coloring, cutting, and blow-dry at very reasonable prices. Couldnt give it a higher rating. Ive gone to much higher priced salons with service and skills inferior to this one. Also, the owner is sincerely concerned that you are happy with the results.

The receptionist is very nasty she does not know how to treat people and calls a staff member "useless" after over booking them constantly...clearly not caring about other employees conditions to work. I myself am a stylist at another salon and we never speak like this to other co workers Im really disgusted with that comment

Dont waste your time getting a massage here. I received an 80% of the entire hour ONE handed massage while person was texting the entire time. Imagine getting rubbed by one hand that frequently stops because you could tell they were reading/thinking of a response. Ridiculous.

I moved to the city this year went to about 3 different places and finally settled on this one because I get a consistently good hair cut. There is a gay guy who works there who is amazing (fenando i think).
