First, the smell in the hallway to our room was nauseating. They said they would have housekeeping look at it... On Sunday when we left there was no change. The A/C in our room did not function properly and did not adequately cool the room. We notified the Front Desk and they said there was nothing they could do. We also found that the jets in the Hot Tub did not work. Please understand these were the things we were willing to overlook. The next day was spent at the Boardwalk enjoying the beach and the rides. When we returned to the Hotel to take showers and get ready for our dinner reservations, we found that our room had no power. Since there were no lights in the bathroom, we were unable to shower. We called to the Front Desk, they said they were aware of the problem and that it would be fixed ASAP. We decided to head out to dinner and hoped that when we returned things would be working again. We were planning to return to the Boardwalk to ride a few more rides after dinner. We were so tired from the long day we decided to head back to the Hotel and relax in the Hot tub instead. When we returned at around 10pm that evening the power was still out, and there was no update to the status of the outage. We were told nothing. I called the Front Desk and they said they would have the power back ASAP. Since the power was out at the Pool our plans to relax in the Hot Tub were shot. Luckily, we had a working light in the room from the generator and were not in complete darkness. At around 3am I had to use the restroom. I attempted to turn on the light... NOTHING. It was pitch black in the room! I fumbled my way through the room to the bathroom nearly injuring myself in the process. Realizing the danger I was in I attempted to reach the Front Desk but the phones were dead. Had I fallen and injured myself, and been able to make my way to the phone there was no way to call out or call 911. The next morning we awoke to again find that there was no power. There was no note on our door or any other information concerning the outage. We were literally clueless as to what was happening. I decided to head down to the Front Desk( since the phones were still not working) as I left my room the visitor across the hall notified me of a FREE breakfast the Hotel was offering. Had that visitor not said any thing to me, I would not have known about it at all. I reached the Front desk to find that the Hotel was offering to refund me for the night the power was out and they notified me that I would not be billed for my spa treatments I had booked that were not received. I asked what the Hotel was going to do to compensate me for the inconvenience and ruining a special event weekend we planned. At that point Andrew Hernandez entered (Director of Room Services). He was very unapologetic, and seemed generally unconcerned with our ordeal.. He was very adamant about the fact that Hotel would not be compensating us for the hell it put us through. He displayed a definite lack of customer service and had no care nor concern for the Hotels reputation and guest well being. Imagine my surprise when I received the bill only to find they had charged me more than the hotel cost for the first night. I would expect that I would not be billed more than the actual cost of the room for the first night... In reality I feel I should not be billed at all concerning the circumstances. The poor execution of a disaster plan or lack thereof in this case leads me to wonder had a real emergency occurred what would have happened. I plan to escalate this matter to the City of Santa Cruz Building Code department (or other governing body) for review since my safety was put at risk with no way of contacting 911

BOTTOM LINE: we were not satisfied with our experience and do NOT recommend, nor will we return.... POSITIVES: large heated pool/hot tub was clean and stocked with towels. The gym was good size and had decent equipment, plenty of hot water in the rooms. NEGATIVES: where do I begin? It was filthy, in need of repair and was not worth the money… . We paid in advance for a $167 junior suite with forest view; sounds nice, right? Not even close! After hotel tax, resort fee and upfront charge for incidentals, we were out of pocket $244 Before We Even Arrived—we hadn’t even left town to get there! WTH?!… All of these hidden charges did not start things off well; just be up front about it. Upon arrival: there was no help offered for our bags, there was blue duct tape on the outside doors that didnt close properly (got maintenance?) and creaky/uneven/echoing hallway to our room—that was our first impression. The room’s carpet was filthy--it turned your feet black [I have photos]. There were not nearly enough towels and one of the light sockets didn’t work to charge my camera… not very suite-like, IMO…. That’s when we began to read the other online reviews. OVERALL: My guess is they only cater to large corporate clients and that’s how they stay in business—the Men’s Warehouse company-getaway was arriving the day we left. Hey, if I worked for a big company and didn’t have to pay out of pocket for anything, I might think this was an OK place with a good location and nice pool area to stay drunk at all day… but for a family or romantic getaway destination, or even to simply relax in cleanliness? FORGET IT; do what we did and drive to Monterey/Carmel area and read online reviews before you book. Thank you for reading.

My husband and I began our honeymoon by staying at Chaminade Resort and Spa for our first two nights. We got a deal through Hotwire, but we still ended up paying more than twice what we normally would have for any hotel. We did that because we were anticipating staying at a superior quality hotel, but we were sadly mistaken. The room was not very big at all, with only room to walk around the bed. There was a dead spider on the wall of our room, and the curtains looked like someone had either spilled candlewax on them, or something else a little less kosher...The bathroom sink had calcium buildup on the faucet, and the ceiling looked like a poor do-it-yourself repair job--there was a big square cut out of the ceiling which was haphazardly puttied back into place. The walls between rooms were paper-thin, and due to that, we could hear our loud-talking neighbors past the time we wanted to go to bed and earlier than we wanted to wake up. Despite the poor quality of our room, the staff was very friendly and prompt. We ate dinner there the first night, and the meal was delicious. We ordered room service breakfast that was delivered promptly. We did call to complain about our neighbors and within minutes there was a staff member knocking on their door to ask them to quiet down. Overall, we would not recommend Chaminade, nor will we stay here again--especially not for that price. I would not rate this as a 4-star hotel, especially since we stayed at 3-star hotels that were far superior than this one.
