I have had many friends graduate from the Aveda Institute New Orleans over the years, so I still go there once in a while for simple services to let the students get some practice. My last service was a haircut and a blowout. Not complicated and pretty straightforward, but it was downright awful. The student did a great cut, but had no interest in finishing the job. I have curly hair, so a blowout takes time but by no means is it difficult. She began blow drying my hair from the TOP, as opposed to the bottom, and when she was "finished" she asked if it was "okay". If you have to ask the client if its okay, chances are that it isnt. The underneath and the sides of my hair were still SOAKING wet and curly. Her work station was completely empty and she had no products on it at all, so my hair felt dry and it showed. I told her no, so she started blow drying and straightening one side. Then she asked me if it was okay again. I said no because the other side of my head was still wet and curly! She blow dryed that side and "straightened" it (half @$$) and then asked if it was okay now. I told her to call her instructor over because my hair was a hot mess. He said it looked great and asked if I was satisfied with it. I was in shock and said I was ready to go because it had already been an hour and a half and I really wouldnt have stepped out in public like that. Ever! At the checkout desk, I spoke with another instructor who gave me a complimentary shampoo and blow dry but Im not sure Ill ever go back. My friend went there 2 weeks after me and had the exact same experience. Great cut, but the stylist didnt want to finish blow drying and straightening her hair. I dont know if LAZINESS is the culture at this Aveda now, but in my opinion unless you finish the job then you may as well not do it at all. This place has certainly gone downhill.

As someone who actually attended the Aveda Institute New Orleans and worked in the industry for years, its sad to see someone spreading misinformation through social media. Aveda New Orleans has excellent programs (Cosmetology and Esthiology) and a matching reputation. Contrary to what JR thinks, salons and spas definitely care what school you graduated from. While there are other options for either program, there are very few who give you the opportunity to hone your skills in a professional setting while teaching you how to act, dress, and market yourself like a salon or spa pro. Ive worked for some of the best spas in the city, prestige makeup lines, and fashion magazines. Whenever I tell someone that I am Aveda trained, their faces light up. Local places might be cheaper but it cannot beat an education from an institute that is recognized around the world. PS- No hair or skincare product sold by a major retailer is 100% natural. Products that are go bad in a matter of weeks and that isnt a sustainable retail practice. Aveda never claimed that their products were 100% natural but they are made with more natural, organic, and ethically sourced ingredients than any other line. Besides that, they smell freaking amazing and, even better, they actually work.

Considering School here? Cosmetology or Esthiology? You will be pressured to enter the cosmetology course. The cosmetology diploma is $25, 000 and the Esthiology diploma is $10,000. Having a cosmetology license encompasses everything that a esthiology license does. But as a esthetician, you obviously wont be able to do hair. The cosmetology program is expensive and not worth the price. Go to John Jay or a less expensive school. When looking for a job, SALONS DO NOT CARE where you went to school. They only care about your skill! All of the Aveda products are not natural. Dont get Sold on this. Do your research and visit other schools. If youre still interested in going to aveda, do not enter the cosmetology program is your heart is MAKEUP and SKINCARE!! Do not do it! You will NOT learn about skincare or makeup in cosmo, not matter what they you or show you on paper. The esti program at John Jay is about $2000. Again, spas dont care where you went to school, they only care about skill. Overall, hair and makeup is a wonderful career and I wouldnt trade it for a corporate gig ever!! Good Luck

I got the worst haircut ever! I asked for two inches off, and I got about seven inches! Besides, one side was about two inches shorter than the other--after I asked the supervisor to help her fix it. I had to get it fixed by a pro the next day, and she said that she gets clients all the time who come to get their hair fixed too. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!! I have been here to get spa services and other things before, and I always thought they did a fair job. I have never once complained about a haircut or gotten anything fixed. But this was ridiculous. Everyone in the salon was staring at me like I was Frankenstein. Never again will I try to save a few bucks on my hair. When I got home, my husband said, "Well, I guess for a third of the price, they give you a third of a haircut."

Ive been to Aveda several times and have never had an issue with their services. Ive gotten a facial, hair cut and eyebrows done. They always ask you how you enjoyed the services at the end. My suggestion to other folks is that if there is something you dont enjoy then tell your practitioner so that they can go back and service your needs properly. Secondly they are students. You know what you are getting into before going so dont complain afterwards. Despite this I can say that my services were always executed properly. And Im going back to get all my stuff done for Mardi Gras.

My hair was DESTROYED last week at this school. No offer to try and fix it--just sarcasm from the instructor. I needed my layers trimmed because my hairdresser was out of town--just went to my hairdresser to try and fix it, and she said she couldnt do anything except try and even out the damage. I look like I had my hair cut with a flo-bee. Two years of growing my hair for nothing. I am beyond angry. They need to instruct the students not to attempt things they dont know how to do! I will NEVER go back there, and advise everyone to avoid this place!

Never ever take their Balance Massage. I got it yesterday and person barely touch my back for less than 60 seconds in total and all she did wast spray a mist and thats it. Waste of money. I am going to contact Aveda for that and will post their response here. Haircut was mediocre, I wont blame student as they are learner and can not expect much from them but educators are lazy, they will never come in between to check if everything is fine. They will come at the end and wont try to retouch your hairs.

Mallory was graduating a few hours after my appt. and she remained focused and attentive to my needs. They were accommodating with initial scheduling, the wait was minimal, Mallory listened attentively to my request and worked with me to achieve a great new look, the instructor was enthusiastic about the change, and the other staff were very friendly. THIS IS THE PLACE to come for affordable salon care and a relaxing, fun experience. Thank you for a great experience, Aveda!
