I will explain up front that this is not a fast haircut. A lot of people want Supercuts speed with Spa service, yet forget that these are two different concepts. This is not a bargain hair chop shop. This is a quality business that respects the time you invest to get a solid haircut, so (unless youre getting a high and tight or a buzz cut) expect to spend 35-45 in the chair, and probably 10-15 waiting to get into the char if they have customers. I regularly had my hair cut at 198 Barber Shop from 2011-2012 before moving out of town. I have since returned to the area six months ago, and find that it is still the friendliest local barber with service I cant get anywhere else close by. Sharon explained to me when I first became a customer, that they all use the same tools. Ive received quality fades and tapers from all of the employees currently working as of October 2015. Ashley gives an immaculate hot lather shave if you have the time. They finish their haircuts with a lather and shave around the back of the neck also. They give senior and military discounts as a courtesy. I notice there are complaints about the price of the haircut. Its $18 currently. Youll pay $25 inside the beltway at a similar establishment. If youre comparing this to the $15 at Hair Cuttery or what might be cheaper on the 175 strip parallel to Ft Meade, I guarantee you will see a lapse in quality in comparison. The bottom line is the service is well worth what you pay.

Was recommended to me by a neighbor, so decided to give it a try. Classic old-school throwback. The straight razors reminded me of the place I used to go as a teenager. Simple, straightforward cuts - no frills, no fuss. Was in-and-out in under 30 minutes (on a weekday). Price was cheaper than either of the national chain joints up the road where I have been going and the service was better / more personal. Some day Ill spring for one of the "hot towel" shaves, but @ $30+ thatll have to wait. For now, Ill be going back for haircuts.

I wont post harsh comments because I do respect the value of small businesses. However, Ive noticed the proximity to military post usually expose a less customer friendly business practice of the profession. You cant make appointments. You cant get too detailed with haircut preference. You know youre a number. Three clients will replace you, so they dont care. This behavior from barbers is fine; but dont treat clients that way and subsequently ask if I want change back on a $20 bill. Really?!

I like the old style kind of beaber shop. Service is prompt, and my son and I seem to manage to get out in an hour or less. Nice to know they offer the hot towel an shave, kind of pricey though. Maybe will try it out on the next visit. Definitely feel like they should audit prices on nearby businesses so they can compete with other barbershops or chain salons. Getting a haircut here can be a little pricey. Still like the service I get, and ambiance I know I wont get at a chain salon.

I went to 198 Barber Shop for a simple military haircut. I was in the chair for nearly two hours and was charged $23 - I should charge them for the loss of my youth. When I thought they were finished another worker came over and told my barber to trim the top and I had to repeat myself several times, saying that I did not want the top cut. For $23 I expect a great deal more than an hour and 30 minutes of getting my head scraped with a dull razor.

I just moved to Maryland a few months ago. After trying several Barbers in the area I found 198 Barber. Best Barber shop I have ever been to, from the classic barbershop feel to the shave finish my experience was great. Been there several times and all the staff are experienced professionals who did great job cutting my hair. I would recommend this to anyone.

A bit pricey but the service is ok. The staff engages you with good conversations to make you feel relaxed while getting your cut. They occasionally offer free services to loyal customers to make them feel appreciated. I haven’t gotten a free cut yet but hopeful to get one soon.

Pretty slow-Ive never gotten in and out in less than 45 min. Usually a decent haircut, but it can be a crap shoot depending on who you get. $1 charge to use a credit card? Really?!? Thats coming out of your tip.

The price is a little higher than average, but the hair cut is well worth the money. Very detail oriented. They take their time to do it right, so its not an in-n-out type of place. I come here regularly.

Im a military member so Im very picky with my hair. They know exactly how to cut an awesome fade and they also give their suggestions with hair that doesnt cooperate.

I have relied on 198 for years and could not be more pleased for both haircuts and beard trims. Frankly, after all these years they are like an extended family.
