I am a student who lives nearby on Mass Ave. After not shaving for a week, I went to Central Barber Shop to see if they could shape my scruff into a workable beard. Neither of the barbers working at the time seemed particularly interested in my business (one was lounging outside and the other talking on his cell phone). When it came time to shave my neck, the barber told me I wouldnt want him using a straight razor on it. "Im not the best, I might cut your neck," he said. Isnt the whole point of going to a barber to have him use a straight razor around the edges? He then offered (insisted, really) that I allow him instead to use a $70 electric shaver---the kind you can buy at Sears and probably already have at home. Not thinking, I allowed him to proceed. Only then did he tell me about all the other customers he uses the thing on. He probably never disinfects it. I wonder if I got hepatitis, or worse, AIDS. (Seriously! Check out: "Electric Razors as a Potential Vector for Viral Hepatitis," N Engl J Med 2000, 342:744-745, March 9, 2000.) And to top it all off, the line he shaved isnt even straight. Worst barber ever. If I could give zero stars I would. Finally, I would note that my barbers name was Anthony. The previous reviewer who gave four stars is also named Anthony. Other things you might notice about Anthony: (a) he wrote with a little too much gusto and an insiders perspective and (b) this is the only place he has ever reviewed. You connect the dots.

Awesome service and quality. Im also a student who lives nearby - Ive been going to this place for five years and have never had a bad experience. The one-star review by "Don" seens like a fluke. Anthony is awesome and Ive never had a problem with him. Its a great old-school small barber shop, just two chairs and a TV thats usually playing ESPN. Service is fast, friendly and efficient and you can easily be in and out within 20 minutes on a weekday - easy lunch-break haircut if you work nearby. I think they recently raised the baseline haircut price from $14 to $16 but thats still not bad at all in the Harvard area. If you just need a simple "guy" haircut its hard to go wrong here.

These guys are great. Cheap, quality, no-nonsense haircuts. The place is tiny - two chairs, and these days usually just one barber. However, they do walk-ins, and Ive never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes. My favorite barber in Cambridge.

Cheap hair cuts that have gone good and bad for me. But overall I was happy and kept coming back, so I can recommend coming here for a cheap and decent hair cut
