At 8:45 Sunday morning, May 3rd, 2015, we were enjoying the beautiful Spring fresh air on our townhouse balcony when a loud rumbling sound announced the arrival of an asphalt scraper in the Kiewit parking lot. The driver started to scrape off asphalt, with its toxic dust blowing everywhere. Sunday morning is an odd time to start repair work on a parking lot, given that this is not an industrial park. Living, breathing human beings live around it and the church across the street has been given the use of said parking lot for Sunday morning worshipers. This did not deter the Layman Paving Company, employed by Kiewit. Over our objections, it continued its work, covering the workers who were not wearing masks (!), the church-going owners of the cars, and us with asphalt dust (which contains silica, known to cause lung disease in humans). In fact, the worker in charge called the police after we complained about the work being done so early on a Sunday, with no notice given to residents so they could close their windows and get off their balconies. This tactic was the worst form of bullying. In effect it said, "So you want to complain about our ruining your lungs? Then well call the police and that should shut you up." The Kiewit Company considers itself to be the gold standard in construction but in their treatment of their neighbors they dont come close to any civilized standard at all.
