( My First Experience 8-16-15 ) One of the most unprofessional places... or, i should say, one of the most unprofessional people who happen to work as a barber at this establishment. Nicole : Green and Rude I walked in there today and a woman with green hair named Nicole was sitting in one of the barber chairs with a magazine glued to her very pinched face. I said " Hi, can i get a basic trim and asked the cost of a cut/trim ? " she answered back with an unfriendly response and a lackluster attitude. Another person was there, a male (Chad) he was on his phone and was minding his own business. Very neutral in his attitude. i should have asked him for his services, now in retrospect. Anyway, i sat in the chair, By the way the place itself is a beautiful Barber shop, classic looking, thought i was going to have a very unique experience...eh, and i did. Nicole asked me what i would like. I explained that i would like a trim : only on the sides and back. nothing else, no fancy fades, shaped, buzzes. keep the top untouched. i said in reference (disconnected pompadour ) to those kinds of cuts you see on men these days where the top is longer with sides and back shorter, but i would like mine to be more un-kept and longer looking. Long story short, she was asking me questions about the cut, like she was not understanding my requests about how i would like this trim. I restated how i would like it, i also explained how i didnt want it as well. She became more sharp in her voice, her demeanor became more passive aggressive and animated (which i guess was better than her almost dead demeanor when i walked in) She clamped my hair up top, started on the left side as she sprayed the hair to be trimmed. then she asked about the hair along my ears, by this time, i was over it, now i was starting to get agitated. Took a deep breathe and i just repeated what i asked before reminding her that i didnt want trimmers, buzzes, fades. The thing was, she was NOT listening to me. she was wanting to cut my hair in a way that made sense to her, and NOT wanting to cut my hair in a way that i wanted or made sense to me. I decided this was not going to work for either of us, it is my money and i dont have to be uncomfortable. i told her - i was done, and got up to remove the cover across me. She became super nasty and told me to "GET OUT!" i was rather shocked at the loud angry way she came at me. i pointed out that she just yelled at me, and she told me - I was rude and to get out again. I told her she was actually very rude and that what made a good hair dresser is a good listener. Again she yelled , "GET OUT! " i was on my way out the door. I passed by Chad who was still outside taking a break on his phone. ( i think) I was so upset at her allegation, cause it was not at all fair. she was clearly projecting her own shortcomings, cause the whole time i was in that Barber Shop she was passive aggressive. ( rude) i know i was not rude. i know when i am rude, and i know how to be very rude. i have been to many hair salons these days. And i have never been rude, even during frustration i make it a point to never get rude, mean, angry. Today i try and practice some kindness as a part of some healing for myself. it took everything for me not to verbally smash her. She has no clue how lucky she is that i didnt take it to the next level. Personally, im proud of myself that i kept on walking. I saved myself an awful experience. Again, this Barber showed no skills in her hair cutting ability to me. However she is highly skilled at being a control freak , passive aggressive , bad listener who used projecting tactics to save her own ignorant "face." Youre in the clear if she actually smiles, then again, just to be safe, go to Chad.

Really traditional mens barber shop, with mostly women barbers. Busy on Saturday mornings, lighter during weekday evenings (I try for the latter). Quality of the cuts vary, but its pretty easy to choose a barber that knows your hair after a few visits. No appointments, but you can put your name on the chalkboard, go grab a coffee, and then come back later.

First came to Rough Cuts several months ago on a Saturday. I got a haircut from Nicole. She was extremely friendly and professional. I had the best haircut of my life! She is now my regular barber and I look forward to every haircut. Consider yourself lucky if you get her. Great shop with a super talented staff. Get your haircut here!!!

Ive been getting my hair cut here for the past three years. All of the barbers have cut my hair at one time or another, and theyve all consistently done a great job. Theyre friendly and professional. Skip the chain shops; get your hair cut at this cool, locally owned barber shop thats truly a part of the community.

In addition to giving a great haircut, Nicole is one of the nicest, most interesting people to visit with. Her work is consistent and shes always in a pleasant mood. Rough Cut is fortunate to have such an able, responsible, and professional individual working at their establishment. Keep up the good work, Nicole!

This place needs competition. The overall vibe is surly, unfriendly, and rude. Who cares about the haircut quality if you have to put up with their stink? They must have enough business with their regulars and only so much love to give. Find another old-timey barber shop!

Very down to earth place. Great prices, and they know how to do real haircuts, unlike some places around here that charge more and cant do a fade. The ladies are also good at knowing when you want to chat, and when you dont.. which is nice.

Great old-fashioned barber shop with no reservations required. I typically go to either Veronica or one of the guys whos there on Saturday mornings. Always do a nice job on a traditional haircut for a reasonable price (~$20).

Chad, gives me consistently excellent hair cuts. New to Portland, I searched for a good cut for two years until I finally realized that the best cuts were only a few blocks away at Rough Cut Barber Shop.

I had no idea it was cash only. After the haircut I had to go to a grocery store and buy some gum and get cash back. That left a sour taste in my mouth.

An excellent haircut in an excellent barebones setting. Since the last reviewer posted (over a year ago), they started accepting payments via Square.
