Ive been a member of Crossfit Hillsdale for about a year and really like the location, cost, community, and of course the owner Wally. Wallys set up the schedule so that theres 1 to 3 crossfit classes per day. I have settled into a schedule where I pretty much always attend classes at the same times, and many other members have done the same, so I see someone I know every time I go. There is no negative competitive energy here, we all push each and offer helpful tips when we can. Each class is an hour and is divided up into joint movement, warmup, skill work, and workout portions. The workout portion can be anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, depending on the workout of the day. Dont let the workout time fool you though - your job is usually to get through the workouts movements as fast as possible, which makes the workout intense. Everyone starts basically the same workout (scaled to their ability level) at pretty much the same time, which pushes everyone to safely work their hardest. Wallys great - he knows a lot of drills and modifications to correct any flaw or work through any limitation in peoples movements. Hell also stop you if youre about to get injured and push you a little if youre dogging it. So to sum up, crossfit here can get you into a well-organized routine, with the only variable being the workout of the day. Youll arrive at the same time, leave at the same time, go through the same class structure, see the same people, and work hard every day. Wallys done a nice job getting just the essential equipment, and will be able to safely guide you through a really hard workout.

As a frequent out of town guest, I have dropped in on various classes over the past several years, while unfortunately never becoming a member. Every single experience has been a positive one and I would highly recommend CrossFit and CrossFit Hillsdale to everyone. As someone who is intimidated by the average weight lifting setting, I found CrossFit Hillsdale to be the opposite of every previous experience. Wally works one on one with the newbies and helps to develop proper technique in order to avoid injury. The rest of the class is supportive and will jump in with tips and pointers. I felt welcomed and encouraged, two hugely important things for me when picking a gym. The gym itself is comfy and clean, smells good and is nicely located for my needs. I dont have a single complaint and would recommend this gym to anyone of any fitness level that is looking to stay healthy, find friends, and have a good time. I only wish that I could move it to my next city of residence. Give it a shot and you wont regret it.

My partner trains here and has been training in this martial arts system for years and I was curious to find out what it was all about. I had always wanted to try a Martial art but I found the prospect of coming in to this kind of school intimidating. When I came in to visit for a class it was clear there was a structure and a protocol for everything. Once I got past the basics of etiquette I found the group was very welcoming the teacher was patient and the class was more physically challenging than I expected. The space is small but everything I needed was there. Including sparring pads, martial arts sticks (whatever those are called)

I love this place! I got tired of signing up for gyms and never going. If I DID go, I had to think about my training program and what I wanted to do on what machine and for how long. Instead, with Crossfit Hillsdale, the only decision I have to make is to go. Im through targeting muscle groups; simply put, its like an adult PE class. Crossfit is a full body workout without having to visit all those individual machines you see in the gym. Its like what I imagine firemen doing to get in shape. The classes are small, the instructor is great, and the workout gives you the results you are looking for.

If you find traditional gyms awkward and alienating, and have tried Martial arts schools and found them intimidating I highly recommend you come in to Southwest Academy of Martial arts and give them a try. At this school I have found the perfect combination of a demanding training program that develops my mental and physical skills and a supportive community. My Martial Arts Classes here are an essential non-negotiable part of my personal self-care when I don’t get my training time I am not a happy camper.

My son, Ben, started kung-fu lessons here about 5 years ago, and now, my younger son, Henry, has begun lessons. We love Sifu Wallys firm but kind approach, and he is a fantastic, patient teacher! In fact, we drive from Beaverton because of our high regard for his classes. The kung-fu program is affordable and there are no hidden costs for belts, fancy outfits, testing fees, or tournaments (which are only $10!). My whole family is thrilled to be associated with this school!

Weve been taking my 5 year old to Westside Kung Fu for about three months now and she is having a blast! And I am loving how good Lara and Wally are with the kids and how the kids are learning the wonderful skills of Kung Fu while having fun. I have not done martial arts myself before and with this place being new I was not sure what to expect. My husband and I are so pleased and my 3 year old cant wait to join her sister!!

Awesome place! Ive been a member for a year and could not be happier with the workouts, instruction, format, and fellow athletes. Wally welcomes both the beginner and the advanced with WODs that are scaleable to every level. Members are also great, checking their egos at the door while bringing-on the hardwork and fun. If you are looking to do Crossfit in Portland, this is the place.

This place is a hidden gem. We have two kids in Kung Fu training with Sifu Wally and not only does he work them hard, he is an incredible model of patience and discipline. His ability to motivate and engage kids is an absolute marvel — they love it, they love the experience with him, and they come home exhausted. Could not be happier!

Ive been taking Kung Fu here since it started. Its a very convenient location, superior instruction, and affordable prices. Taking Kung Fu has made me stronger, more disciplined, and much more confident while learning how to defend myself and others. I highly recommend this school and hope to see you there!!

Never was able to get a subscription but I have to say the owner/instructor is awesome! Small enough classes allow for individual focus in both the Crossfit and Martial Arts classes. Every class I was able to make it to was extremely enjoyable and made me a believer in Crossfit hahaha. Cheers!

I love the kids program for my 5 y/o son! Wally & Lara are great--they keep things moving so the kids arent sitting at all! I love that each class is different and focused on a different "trait" like honesty, respect, etc. Best of all, there is no pressure on the kids or the parents!
