In Fairfield the majority of listings are with Gateway Realty. So they would be difficult to avoid. However based on my experience as a buyer this is probably a good thing. Their agents are a lot nicer than every other real estate agent I have encountered in other areas and Fairfield itself. Being friendly doesnt impede their skill in getting a deal accepted and business done. They are organized and make all the signing very accessible, ie you can do it online/over e-mail. I would highly recommend Celia and Jeffery Wu. They were great at vetting houses, sending pictures, and helping one in every way they can to get deal done.
