Oh, where to begin. Brought my daughter in for an updo (low bun with a few curly strands and incorporated braid) and makeup from a Master Student. I should have gathered her and left when our Master Student called someone over to do the small braid (no, not even a french braid, just a small accent braid). Once it was done, it was ok. Not awful, not impressive. My daughter seemed happy, and that was all that mattered. So why the 1 star? Oh, it gets worse. The bun fell out during makeup. Makeup that she had to stand up for, because there was only 1 seat. Stylist fixed it, told her to be very careful, and continued the makeup. The makeup took less time than you would spend to apply it if you were running out for groceries. She asked for contouring, like the girl in the 1 seat they had for makeup. Hers was beautiful. The end result for us was no attempt at contouring, blush that looked like it was applied with a paint brush, no blending, eyeshadow all over the place, and Im not sure mascara was even used. Her lipstick would have been spot on if she were a hooker in the Wild West...Hoco, not so much. We paid, since there seemed to be no one around supervising, and saved ourselves the argument. I wasnt trying to conpletely ruin my childs day. Her hair fell again in the car (where she said she liked it ok, but figured she could fix the side at home), and again while she was redoing her makeup. Completely. All in all, we paid for hair that I had to go for supplies to redo, and makeup that we had to scrub off and redo. Almost 2 hours there wasted, another 2 hours of store and remake time. This was not the deal I thought it would be. I understand that these are students. I understand that it takes longer and may not be perfect. Maybe this Master Student is really good at color. But, if youre saying Master anything, Im assuming that there is at least a proficiency level that can handle a bun and a braid that may stay together with light movement. I doubt very seriously that anyone gets their hair done to go home and sit with absolutely no movement. I would also assume that they would be able to apply makeup that looks marginally better than a toddler who has found their mothers makeup bag. I get this is a school, but if youre graduating in accounting and are Master level, I can expect that you are able to do some addition, yes? Same for hair and makeup. I wont even go into the rude, red headed student that I encountered outside of the building, who became very silent when I asked for her name after she was ballsy enough to make some very snipey comments. Needless to say, we wont be back. You should save yourself the time and money and go elsewhere. Trust me, youll spend the same amount fixing whatever goes wrong, but be out extra time and irritation. Update : Left a message with a manager for director before posting this. Still have yet to receive a call back. I cant imagine that this contact info would be of any more help..

I was tired of paying $60-$90 for haircuts that always fell short of my expectations, no matter how much I tried to communicate with the stylist or how much I paid - and with long hair, its not a complicated cut! I was tired of seeing stylist eyes almost glaze over while they busied about, each time I sat down to answer their question about what cut I wanted. I was tired of salons just taking one look at my long hair and adding 20-30% to the price. I was tired of the inevitable disappointment midway through a cut when I realized that my request for length trimmed, layers, etc, had obviously fallen on deaf ears and I had to deal with a mediocre cut, pay an insane tip, and console myself with "well, hair always grows back"... I set out to at least get a cheap cut - if it was disappointing at least I wasnt out of too much $. I was PLEASANTLY surprised by Aveda Institute. It was honestly the BEST haircut Ive had in a LONG time. * Seen on time * They dont start chopping away - they go through your hair to see what was done in the past. * I know theyre students, but Aveda instructors leave little room for mistakes. Students have to get approval for their proposed technique, and instructors do a thorough check at the end for grading/finishing. Instructors are always coming by to help and watch - lots of them floating around and I felt good. * VERY professional, kind, and listened a lot to what you wanted, etc - ALSO great about telling honestly what looks good or not - Im not just there to get chopped, but also for their stylists opinion. * FREE salon extra - hand massage, or other. Sure, its a little longer of an appointment, with lots of instructor checks, and students are a little slower than a stylist with 10 years of chopping. BUT - I also think students are more eager to listen, be attentive, thorough and creative. If theyre stuck, there are always great stylists around to help - never a feeling of stranded with an idiot holding scissors. Im never going anywhere else. I loved it. And, it only cost $15 - I felt like I was stealing. It was WORTH every penny of a $60-90 cut. In the end, you can actually feel OK about dropping $ on the salon products in the lobby! :-) Give it a try - especially if youre not feeling totally wowed by your current stylist or looking to save some money (and who isnt?)

I had the worst experience of haircut ever today. I have been visiting Aveda since 2010 and I have loved it always, but today was the worst experience of all, in fact after today, I am afraid of barbers! I was assigned to a senior student, graduating in two weeks, who was more enthusiastic about getting out of Aveda to pursue her business degree than haircut. I have never met anyone worst who handles hair so roughly ever. It all started from hair wash, she did not care if my hair was pulling, or did not care about informing me what she was putting in my hair and why. Then came the leveling of hair, she would hold the scissors open and hold it with the comb while taking my hair to cut, and the open scissors would tangle in my hair and she would pull it out and my hair would get chopped with it. I was almost into tears at that point, but the worst was yet to come. She started blow drying my hair, literally yanking the comb through my hair and the air was hotter than I could endure. I was cringing with all the yanking by this time and asked her to lower the air temperature twice, after third request, she tried to lower the temperature, but it was still too hot. Then, without warning, she left abruptly, and I was messaging my scalp because it burnt like hell. Luckily her instructor spotted me doing so, and asked me if I was ok, and finally, he heard me! He told me that my hair may not be completely straight from the roots if I requested for the lower temperature, and I was fine with it. I looked at the brush, there were so much hair yanked off, I just couldnt stand the site! Then as a final part, I requested the side bang. Without asking me about the length I was comfortable with, she chopped off a chunk first. I was in shock, trying to comprehend what happened, and she went on cutting, and I intervened. And just like that, she declared that haircut was finished. It looked horrible, and hence I explained it to the instructor. He tried fixing it and did a decent job, but with all the hair pulling and burning scalp, I just came home and broke into tears. I dont know if I could have requested a new student the moment the pulling of hair started, I wish I could have asked.
