After spending many months cogitating the design of the new kitchen, we began the search for a team that could bring our vision to fruition. The first step involved countertop selection. This was an education, and source of frustration, as conflicting information flowed from those only interested in making the sell. When we finally decided on a particular granite, it was time to get a good cabinet man. Initially we came across individuals who indicated that they were custom cabinet makers. However, when they configured various components including a fairly complex island design it became apparent that their recommendations werent in the direction of improvement but limited by prefab selection. Rationalization became the mode of argument and the phrase, "We can have that custom made but it will cost twice as much as the original estimate" became a source of irritation. We came across Tom Pogues card and initially dismissed it as a budget breaking option. My wife and I agreed, we seemed to be getting further away from our original vision. Finally we decided to call Tom. That turned out to be a great decision. The first thing that I noticed was that custom cabinets didnt have to cost twice as much and could match the needs of the customer very precisely. However, the big benefit came when Toms experience with custom arrangements provided us with about twice the cabinet space we originally envisioned. Furthermore, existing cabinets that had to be torn out werent discarded but rearranged in the dining room as a service table and for essentially nothing but the cost of a new countertop. Tom provided us with so many new ideas that really surpassed our original expectation; And it wasnt the budget buster we originally feared. Tom is a very likeable person; And at no point placed any pressure on us to make a decision. We did take our time to make sure the design was correct. I had concerns with the weight of the countertop on a massive island in the middle of a considerable span. All the granite and marble people told me not to worry ... this is done every day. Tom consulted with a structural engineer and concluded that my concern was valid. Even though he knew this would delay the process, as I had to rethink my countertop selection for weight consideration, Toms advice was invaluable and in my opinion, selfless. Tom is the reason our job turned out perfect. The countertop people also commented that his workmanship was superior and they would be proud to call it their own had they done it. If you are a cook then you realize the importance of a well designed kitchen. I will use this area for decades and I appreciate the thought and patience of Tom Pogue. Get with Tom to come on by to see his work at our house anytime. I also wanted to thank Hank and Michael for the desire to go above and beyond with various installations that could have cost so much more if I had to have other crews come in on the job.
