I dont write too many reviews, but the experience was so counter to what I see on other sites that I felt I had to, as it seems its being misrepresented by people who are evaluating the atmosphere and not the quality of the services. I walk by Maxine on my way to work and having newly moved back to Chicago to find my favorite hairdresser at a different salon had moved cities, I decided to try something new. I asked that they recommend someone familiar with curly hair cutting and then booked an appointment. We went through a prelim consult, I told her exactly how my hair behaves and needs to be cut, and she seemed to get it. I went and got shampooed, which was where it started to go horribly awry. The girl splashed shampoo all over my neck, which got on my sweater, and she told me shed wipe it off when she was done. One of my favorite parts of going to a nice salon is the shampoo, since its usually very massage-like, but not here. I almost left after that (with a stain on my sweater and shampoo on my neck and in my ears), but I stayed. The stylist was great, personable, friendly, has experience, yet ignored virtually everything I told her about my hair. To add insult to injury, she cut an additional 2 inches off past what I told her I was comfortable with, clearly not factoring in how much shorter my hair would be when it curled. On top of all that, she cut my hair all one length, which one NEVER EVER does to curls. Ever. Period. She cut a few strange "layers" as she called them, straightened it, and I was done (the blowout was nice, Ill give her that). I had a hunch it was exactly what I didnt want, but its hard to tell without seeing it curly, so I went home, wet it, and confirmed. Its easily the worst haircut Ive ever had, and its so short that I can barely do anything with it. I called and spoke to the receptionist, who was lovely (as all the staff were), and booked for a redo 3 days later. The re-do was good, but little things like the fact that she cut and combed my hair with very old, dirty looking utensils and that used a Conair difuser on the blow-dryer that kept falling apart and hitting me on the head when she dried my hair were just very off-putting to me. The final piece of this is that they charged for a glass of wine. For a $100 haircut, I expect professional shampooers, complimentary beverages, alcoholic and non, state-of-the-art styling implements (not piles of used, dirty curling irons and hair brushes) and stylists who participate in continuing education (or at least listen to the client, who knows her hair very well and was very specific). While the facade is lovely, and it certainly appears to be very chic and state-of-the-art and there are lots of magazine articles touting their expertise, I found this to be a huge disappointment thats now cost me $140, 2 hours of my time, and will result in me having to wear my hair back for at least 3 months, which is beyond upsetting. I really wish Id followed my instincts and walked out after the shampooer carelessly sloshed product all over me without batting an eyelash.

Kudos to Robert and Elizabeth! Robert has done an amazing job to make my color and highlights look natural and beautiful. I cannot tell you how many compliments Ive had over the years. If I want a change (and what woman doesnt), he listens, gives me his opinion, and then does another great job on my color. Elizabeth has been doing my hair for several years after my last stylist left to stay home with her children. A hard transition for me after many years, but Elizabeth stepped in and has been doing a wonderful job. She listens carefully to what I want, and each time I come we discuss whether or not I want any changes. Even when I think Im having a bad hair day, others tell me how great my hair is. In addition to Robert and Elizabeth, everyone at Maxines is friendly and accommodating. When I go I feel as though Im stepping away from all the stress in my life and taking a mini vacation. I live pretty far away (Northbrook) and happily make the trip downtown. Its worth every minute.

Zero stars. Destroyed my hair. Loyal customer for 7 years and Diana Mildice ruined it with awful horizontal slices of blond all over my hair instead of weaving more foils of blond to give me more dimension. She Never got my low light right the past two years and text while doing my foils. They promise to fix it and the next guy foiled and overlapped her mess and my hair is dry damaged and falling out. 200 bucks for color - the experience should be top notch. I should not have had to come back every time to redo (tipping to be nice) cuz spots were missed or low light was wrong. After 7 years make a note - I am someone who is consistent in what they want - you would think you would take your time and do it right the first time. But when someone smashes clients into an only 2 day weekend work schedule. Quality suffers and so does your hair.

I came to Maxine Salon for color only - the place is pretty expensive so I expected it to be good. I decided to go Red and went for my second appointment to get the color I wanted. It was really disappointing. The colorist literally got red hair color all over me - in my eyebrows all over my neck and face and did not clean it up properly. I got a blow out after which was also not very good - when i got home i tried to clean up the mess all over that was not even well hidden by the blow out. After 3 washes i still couldnt get the red color off of my forehead so I called the salon to speak to a manager....she basically said to try an astringent or lotion and that was it and rushed me off the phone ...neither one worked and I am still trying to get the red ring around my forehead to wash off. Would definitely never go back!!!

Ive been going to this salon for about 4 years. For "curly hair" hair cuts, I recommend Cheryl and Josie. For color, Rex is awesome. He is a good communicator and will truly listen to you. If for some reason, youre not happy about your service, you just need to talk to Carlos about it. I really appreciate Carloss professionalism. I had a small issue once and he took care of it. I also think Demi was awesome. I had a huge knot in my hair and she immediately came to my rescue. Overall, I give this place 5 stars. You just need to be clear about what you want.

I have looked for years for a stylist that can work with my fine hair. I have been to the top salons in Chicago and after every cut I always had to go home to "fix" my hair before I could go out in public. Then I found Maxine and Severn!! He gives the most precise cut I have ever had and he asks every time I come in how the previous cut worked out and what I want him to do ths time. He LISTENS and I always walk out happy. Plus, all the staff are extremely nice and you never get any attitude. This is the best haircut in Chicago .
