This place just exudes "man" and oozes of a time long since gone where men could go, feel comfortable, treated like a million bucks, not have it cost you a million bucks and get some of the best services a man could want! I was in from out of town and had my choice (had 4 hours to kill) of several places to choose from in the loop. I chose these gents because they were straight up honest and you could tell when I call them, they were appreciative of my business regardless of whether or not it was my first time or if I was a weekly regular. Being that Im from South Carolina, I dont get the luxury of a real shave, so I purposefully didnt shave that day, knowing that whomever I chose would be doing a shave too. These guys are the bomb. Ive had many "man treatments" before, and these guys are hands down the best value out there today. I may have had other shaves that lasted longer, or had more "funky stuff" put on my face, but in the end, they were no different in terms of quality and these guys were MUCH less expensive. I remember when I was a kid, going into the neighborhood barber every week or so on the weekend. The camaraderie, the stories and the overall "being a man" feeling you got from that, is exactly what it felt like at this place. For over 40 years this guy has been here doing this. Clearly doing something right. Keep up the great work!!

I started getting my hair cut there in 1997 when I worked on the floor of the CME (it used to be next door at the time). It was, and still is, the only place I can get my hair cut the way I want it. I have a funky-shaped head with a couple cowlicks, and whether either Sam or Sal cuts my hair, it looks terrific every time. Occasionally- for conveniences sake- I stray, and go either to a quicky/cheapy place, or to a pricey salon ($40+ bucks), and each time I thoroughly regret having not taken the time to hop on the train and make my way to The COBS! So.... I now make it a priority to make my way down there for the cut, and each time I walk in the door, Sam greets me like an old friend. He asks how the family is & how my music is coming along, and we chat about the goings-on in Chicago and around the world. Its truly a classic Barbershop in every sense of the word; the place itself looks like a movie-set. Its on the 15th floor Opera House (that was built in 1929), and Sam has owned and run the place since 1973. His staff of guys are just as classy as he is, and nobody shines a pair of shoes better than his right-hand-man Darnell. If youre from out-of-town youve got to put it on your list of things to do in Chicago, and if you live in town, make your way there and for $25 bucks, experience one of the things in life that is priceless.

Absolutely the best barbershop to get your haircut in Chicago! Ive been going here for a while and it cant be beat! The Civic Opera Barber Shop is located on the 15th floor in the beautiful Civic Opera House building. Sam, Sal, and Leo are old school, knowledgeable, and skilled barbers that definitely know what theyre doing. Ive never left here unhappy with a cut. They offer very affordable haircuts that includes a basic hot lather neck shave the works. You can also get a manicure or several other different types of trims and Darnell also does a masterful job shining shoes or boots! The shop has hdtvs and theres plenty of reading material; it is a male santuary. Its the type of spot your grandfather wouldve gone too; simple, genuine, filled with tradition and quality. So if you need a cut and/or a shoe shine make an appointment with one of the guys. You will not be disappointed. Fyi its cash only.

I dont like to tell anyone about "hidden gems" I find in the city because, well, then they wouldnt be hidden. But I had been looking all over Chicago for a quality, reasonably priced haircut and finally found the last barbership Ill ever need in the Civic Opera Barber Salon. The barbershop has everything I need to make me feel comfortable. Sam was my barber and did an absolutely fantastic job. For some perspective, Ive spent $125 for a haircut in the Loop, very recently. It was a great cut, but not some where I could rationalize going for every cut. The cut I got from Sam was the same, if not better quality for much, much less. I am very picky when it comes to haircuts and Sam met all my needs. Im thrilled that I found a new barber and cant wait to get a haircut again.

If you have been looking around for a great custom cut with all of the trappings, an atmosphere with old school feel and luxury service at an affordable price, youve found it here with Sam and the boys at COBS. Forget Halo, Buzz and several of the other "luxury mens salons" - come here for a cut from seasoned pros who use just the tips of the scissors (no electric trimmer - but, theyve got it if you want it), some hot lather with a straight razor on the neck, a perfect shine from my man Darnell, and great conversation. The best part, depending on tip, you get all for this under $40. Youll enjoy a little slice of luxury and pampering without having to pay for it.

The shop is clean and representative of a mans barber ship designed by Ron burgundy himself but the staff does not share the same sentiment. Theyre more like grumpy old men. I was greeted coldly and glared at like I wasnt welcome. I was expecting an outgoing friendly barber shop experience. I didnt see one smile while I was in there or hear one friendly comment. The name should be changed to "Corporate Robot Cut"for all the sulking suits and their routines. They do know how to cut hair if youre ready to look like your dad, I will go else where to find a modern cut. Its cash only BTW.

Sam, Leo, and Sal are living proof that you dont have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks! This place is a real treasure...a "guys guy" kind of place with real Italian barbers who take great pride in knowing that you are a walking billboard for their business. The ambiance and personal attention are throwbacks to an earlier time, and youll thoroughly enjoy yourself every minute your there. And dont forget to have Darnell (a.k.a. "Coach") shine em up for you before you leave! Great place to chill out and talk sports, politics...whatever!

Recently moved to Chicago and was looking for a new barber. The Civic Opera Barber Shop is nearby my workplace, and I liked its old-school style and the fact its in a historic building. That said, I decided to try it out and I am very pleased that I did. Sam cut my hair, and he has been working there for 38 years. Although it was my first time there, he made me feel welcome and treated me like a regular. I recommend this shop to anyone seeking a new barber. Good environment, good service, and not outrageously expensive.
