I have been a member of the fitness center for a few years and while the equipment and cleanliness are above average and rates are reasonable, the efficiency and friendliness of the associates leave quite a bit to be desired. This seems to be the case across the board, from department to department and it begins at the front desk where you are greeted with banality. While concerns are addressed, they are seldom rectified. They are just "friendly enough" so as not to seem rude, but need to remember they are ultimately in a service industry with an ultimate goal of community service and sometimes its unwise to count on the generosity of the member to maintain retention. They also need to teach new membership proper gym etiquette. You will see people lying everywhere doing floor work, even if it blocks the only walkway and if someone forces themselves on equipment you may be using (because they wont ask) dont expect them to even ask if they can rearrange it to how you had it adjusted.

I visited at 2 pm on a Sunday and bought a day pass to lift. At $15, it was one of the most affordable prices in the area, plus I was able to rent a lock, use the locker room, shower and use towels all free of additional charges. As for the exercises area, its great. There was a good selection of free weights, machines and cardio. The environment was clean a day tidy without seeming uppity. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the staff was very personable. Shout out to the young lady from Cleveland and the gentleman with the bald head and the beard who talked basketball with me.

I have been around clubs, including exclusive social clubs all my life, some in Chicago when my family used to live there in the 70s and myself as a reciprocal member of my old club in Europe. The YMCA Evanston has superb facilities and staff head and shoulders above the competition in Evanston. Actually they have no competition. It is so much more than a fitness club.

We have tried the big name athletic clubs but they did not adequately serve our entire family. If you have kids, theres no other place like it! Wonderful child care (where they actually want to go!), great swim team and classes for kids with all of the things you are looking for yourself.

One of the worst first impressions I had ever got from a local center. The lady at the front counter was very rude and impolite. She was being improper, and was whispering in a very bitchy way. Not to forget her unhelpful replies, grouchy attitude, and inappropriate tone of voice.

Great pools, aquatics, racquetball courts, lockers and gym. Great family locker room, child care for while you work out and family gym and swim. Family gym and swim will help you survive the winter with younger kids. Their childcare will give you time to get in shape.

Great people, nice facility, reasonable price, and best of all, more than any other comparable facility, you know with the YMCA your money is going to help people. You see it every time you come in to exercise.

Full featured gym equipment, weights, large indoor track, racquetball, squash, swimming pool, nice locker rooms. Great for families and a fixture of the community!

Gym is decent. A little on the crowded side and has a little bit of a smell, but otherwise has all the equipment. Dumbbells go up to 100lbs.

Grew up going to the Y, and as an adult, I have always preferred it to other gyms. McGaw is great, and I love the child care they provide.
