Ive been here quite a few times over the past 5 years, because I live only a walks distance away. Ive gotten oil changes, tire changes, and Ive had them check various problems to get an estimate, usually to be turned away by incredibly high prices. My take away is that you should really only come here if you need new tires or an oil change. To their credit, they have great hours, you can drop in without an appointment, and theyll get the job done very quickly. The price for an oil change isnt great, you can change your own oil in half the time for an 8th of the price, but to be fair, their price for an oil change is more or less standard in this area. You probably wont be price gauged too horribly for new tires either, but you should be sure to check with Discount Tires Plus, as I saved $20 per tire by going there instead. Recently I went to see them on a Friday for brake repair. They gave me a free inspection and let me know that two wheels needed new brake pads and rotors. They also told me Id need a new caliper for one of the wheels, and that it would take until Monday for the part to arrive. I asked if it was possible to fix the wheel without a new caliper, but they were insistent it was not. The total for two brake pads, two rotors, and a caliper? $1200. College students dont even have that much money, how do they expect anyone to do business with them when their prices are literally too high to possibly pay? Id rather drive without 2 brakes then pay $1200. I understand that that is crazy. That is the point. So instead, I took the same car to Accurate Auto, in Iowa City. They fixed it for a total of $284. Turns out I didnt need a new caliper! The brakes have been working beautifully for the first couple hundred miles, but Ill update if that changes. I hate to leave bad reviews. The people at tires plus are extremely friendly, and can fix your car quickly practically any time if theres an emergency. But theyll overcharge the crap out of you. I went here for five years, unaware of any better alternative. I wish there had been a review on the internet like this to tell me that Accurate Auto will fix your car for 1/4th the cost. I would have easily been able to keep up maintenance on my car, and it wouldnt be a pile of crap now.

Will never use their service again! Ever since I got to Iowa for work I thought I was lucky to be near a place that can provide me with oil changes, tire repair and general engine maintenance. For the first few times I was there, I left feeling somewhat ok (their pricing is on the high-end). However, the last time I went in really took the cake. Ever since I got back from a trip, my car had been making this clicking noise with an airy sound to it. Due to their convenient times I went in and had them look at it. Next day I went to pick it up. They told me they had changed out parts of the engine and tuned it up. Did you know that it costs ~$100 in labor alone to change spark plugs and wiring? I didnt. At least thats what it costs there. 2 minutes after pulling out of the parking lot I can hear the noise again. I call them and they have me bring it back the next day and change out the electric coil (which it needed as it was cracked and arcing out on the engine). Again, after driving out of the parking lot the noise was back. They took another look and said that the valves would need to be calibrated. I dont know much about cars so this sounded like an easy fix. Fortunately for me they did not have the tools to actually do the job and therefore sent me somewhere else to have it done. I come to find out that if theres something wrong with the valve, then there is some sort of damage. Turns out that it was an excess of carbon deposits preventing the valves from closing. Had I never gone here first, I dont think I would have incurred as much as I did to find out that my car pretty much was at its end. To their credit the staff has always been friendly with me, but thats about all they have going for them. After my last experience I no longer plan to use their services, regardless of their convenient location and availability.

9/10/2011: I had received a gift certificate from someone in Minneapolis who contacted me regarding my poor feedback. This was for a free oil change. I decided to give my local Coralville store another chance. I showed the certificate to the guy at the desk, and he arranged everything, and I left my car. I was told it was ready, and returned to pick it up. I gave another guy at the desk the certificate, and he took it in back. The owner came out telling me they do not accept these Tires Plus gift certificates. After a bit of arguing, me explaining that I showed it when I first came in, and left my car under the assumption it was accepted etc etc, I walked out without having to pay for it. To Tires Plus Corp, take this guys franchise away. He does not honor prices, does not honor anything that is tires plus. He is just using the name, and giving it a bad reputation. ORIGINAL FEEDBACK:This is not the first time I had issues with this location. My most recent encounter was when I went to the Tires Plus website to check on tire prices. I printed a quote, with the Coralville store listed as my location, and went to the store to get my tires. When I arrived, I was told that they could not honor the price on the quote from the website, which said it was good for 30 days. It was going to be significantly more money. In the past, they have forgotten to put center caps back on rims, and when questioned about it (it was night when car was picked up, realized the next morning when it was light out) they said they must have fallen off, and it was not their problem. Another time, they flat out told me I was lying when they did not put my covers back on a car. They claimed they were never there. Next day I went back, and another guy found them for me, and returned them to me.

I just took my car in for an oil change for the first time since they changed from a franchise location to a corporate location. My gut instinct is that Im not going to like them as well as corporate. In the past, Ive felt like they did my oil changes without trying to sell me extra stuff. In fact, they did more than one thing for me for free (put a license plate on the front of my car and screw in a light bulb that I thought had burnt out). Although they never did any major work on my car, I felt they were sufficiently competent and honest. Today when I went in with a coupon for a standard oil change, the guy tried to up sell me on special oil for cars with more than 50,000 miles, then tried to up sell me on a more advanced inspection. I declined both. Then while I was waiting for my car, they called and told me that they recommended a new air filter and tire balancing. I accepted the air filter but declined the tire balancing this time around. I know the point of a corporation is making money, which is done by up selling, but it makes you skeptical about their honesty.. I wish they would have stayed a franchise, even if it meant not accepting corporate coupons or online prices!
