*Do Not Join if you are in the military* I moved to Manhattan over a year ago and found this gym to be the only viable option for working out in the area. At the time, the Gym was MAX Fitness and offered the member the ability to use the gym 24hours. The fee was around 45$ with a yearly "improvement" fee. Early in 2015, the MAX Fitness locations were purchased by "Genesis Health Clubs", thats when My experience with this gym took a turn for the worse. As their first act, the Genesis Management retained all of the old terms and cost of the MAX Fitness contract but cut the hours down to only staffed hours, which takes away a significant contributing factor to why I signed the contract in the first place. In other words, the new management materially changed the service provided, without attaining a new contract with the members. The condition of the gym since the change in management has deteriorated as well, the anti-septic wipes that were available disappeared, and the overall cleanliness of the gym was visibly worse. Yet still, it is the only gym in Manhattan so I continued to use their service. The final straw was when I received deployment orders and am now still on the hook for an entire months fee, after I deploy. I was informed that I was "lucky" that my contract has expired in march or I would not be able to cancel without an additional fee. I was also informed that in order for me to cancel my membership I would have to provide a Written notification 30 days prior to the expected date of cancellation. I attempted to bring my issues to the manager; who was not present during normal business hours. I had to settle for a rather abrupt phone call letting me know that the contract I originally signed with another company, for different material service, would force me to pay an additional month of fees. They would not divulge any corporate contact information, and instead said they would "let me know". Take Aways: (TLDR) -Dont Join this Gym if you are stationed at Fort Riley. -Dont Join this Gym if you are a germ-aphobe -Dont Join this Gym if you will not soldily be able to go for 12 consecutive months. -Expect the service provided to change during your membership at this Gym -Dont expect any effective service from the management of the Gym. One star, because google wont allow for zero stars, I would not recommend to friends or family members.

The gym is nice, but they dont have a lot of machines that the gyms on post have. You have to wait a long time for any machine, and the setup doesnt offer you many choices. I would like it if the cardio was mixed together. I love the treadmill, my friend likes the elliptical; so we cant work out together! Which is the whole point. Oh and if you dont want to help them pay for new equipment, dont get your membership there. I pay $50 a month, and had to pay $31 on new equipment? Theyre obviously making a lot of money, so why? I didnt even receive a notice!!! Just saw it on my account. The girl I talked to over the phone said it was in my contract, and they went over it with me??? Really? I think I would have remembered that! What a load of crap! The only reason they get 2 stars is because the machines stay clean for the most part... Dont expect to get all of your workout done. Dont expect good service. Plan on paying for their new equipment. (if its treadmills I am going to SCREAM!) Expect to pay 100+ for the register fee... and thats without the actual membership. Oh, no scales in the locker rooms... Bring your own towels if you do decide to join, theirs leaves lint all over if you wipe the sweat away, and let me tell you it is not a pleasant experience to have lint in your eyes while youre running! They wasted too much space on areas of the gym where they could have made the actual equipment area larger. You literally have to weave yourself through machines trying not to hit anyone while theyre running to get disinfecting wipes! Im pretty sure there are regulations for these things, like the machines have to be a certain distance from each other, etc. And where are the trash cans??? Theres practically none in the back area, and they wonder why people leave their trash around. I never thought I would say this, but the gyms on Post are WAY better!

I will never ever ever sign up at any genus is club. We went in December cause they said it a big discount... and giving away a lot of special gifts etc. Kept calling us to come in . When we did I kept telling the girl i wanted to only look around i was trying to see my options i told her I didnt want to pay or anything yet ... She knew what she was doing because she just kept us talking and talking next thing you know she was saying how the other gyms are no good theirs is the better one etc. Long story short we ended up diving up Im so dumb for not fully reading what I was diving she never once mentioned that we were diving a contract or that they do contracts. We do not live there in the town so we never ever went to this facility at all do i went back early January to to tell them were just not able to travel that way and close the acct out. Thats when I found out we were locked in and the price that she told us we were locked in two have was a lie !!!! They went up on us without saying anything. So now stuck on paying a lot of money on something we never even went and used their equipment at all.i think her name was Amy or something like that she had blond hair.. also we didnt really have a good 1st impression of the gym as soon a s you open the door a big aroma (Not a good one!!) Of sweat and smells like metal hangers !!! Hits you in the face it made us gaag!! I know people sweat and smells sometimes when exersing but that is the only gym I i habe been to that smelt so very bad

Genesis Health Clubs is a complete 180 from Max Fitness. The price my wife and I paid for a Max Fitness membership was less than Genesis fee, and yet Max had 24-hour access, all up-to-date and CLEAN equipment, and local, professional, friendly staff. Genesis costs more and has none of these. Recently my wife and I moved away, so before we left I went in to cancel our memberships. Thinking there might be a cancellation fee (I wouldnt know since we never got a new membership policy when the company switched over), I brought in my PCS orders thinking they might exclude me from the fee. The kid that helped me make the cancellation ensured me that there were no fees and there would be no other payment required for me or my wifes accounts. My wife just received a phone call yesterday saying we owe an additional months payment because we didnt give them a 30 day notice that we were cancelling our membership. A 30 DAY NOTICE? You are a GYM not a landlord. I will do my best to make sure everyone I know still living in Manhattan or moving there does not join your club or is at least aware of what they are getting into. We definitely appreciated the great service, friendly professional staff, and the supportive small business that MAX FITNESS was during our 3 years in Manhattan. Thanks to Genesis Health Clubs for ruining a great thing.
