Very dissatisfied with the career centers handling of my unemployment benefits. Unfortunately, I recently found myself in need of benefits for a short period of time. I scrutinized the job search web site provided and found zero opportunities I considered to be matches for my skills or pay grade. So I searced for a job on my own. My search was nationwide - I applied for several jobs online. Then I took my job search on the road. Since I was based out of the "Greater Cincinnati area" I travelled to KY, IN and OH networking and dropping off resumes. While on the road I missed the arrival of a letter stating I was selected to participate in a reemployment services program... that listed a date for a session which had already passed. I called the number Indicated and was transferred to the person who had been handling the class. I explained what I had been doing and her reply, loosely translated, was that my actively looking for a job was problematic since it could make me somehow unavailable for work. I was then informed that she had already rescheduled me for another session the following week. This call was made from a landline so I dont have a date or time stamp. Fast forward to the following week: Im in OH on a final interview and I accept a job! The next morning I call the Career Center to let them know that Ive accepted a job and I wont be able to make the session that day because I would be looking at apartments etc. The lady I spoke to the previous week (we will call her Lady #1) was unavailable. The person I spoke to this time (Lady #2) was very sincere in her congratulations, asked me when I would be starting and told me she would pass my message along to Lady #1. I made this call from my cell phone on October 20th. Today I tried to apply for what would be only my THIRD unemployment benefit check - and my benefits were denied since I did not show up for what is NOW being referred to as an eligibility review. I immediately called the Career Center, spoke to 2 different people and was then transferred to the one person who, I was informed, might be able to assist me. And got her voicemail. Thats fine, I understand that she, ironically, has a job to do and may not have been immediately available to assist. I hung up, suddenly realizing that disputing what happened to me isnt worth the pittance of my unemployment check. I re-read the letter I was sent carefully and it says: ...Kentucky law requires that you participate in this reemployment services program in order to remain eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. The, Failure to attend MAY affect your receipt of unemployment insurance benefits. Direct any questions to Kentucky Career Center staff at the number given above. Which I had, twice previously - but the Career Center has no record of those calls. Mmmhmmm. So, fellow Kentuckians, thats our unemployment system at work. What have I learned? Dont bother being proactive in your job search. Adjust your lifestyle DOWN so that you can subsist on your unemployment benefits indefinitely. Just be sure to attend the reemployment services program which provides...special assistance in finding employment including assistance with an individual reemployment plan... I wont apologize and ask forgiveness for my aggressive job search and plead for a re-in statement of my benefits so I can receive a THIRD and FINAL check. I wont feel bad about actively promoting myself so that I could acquire a job that meets MY criteria - a job that didnt exist in the Career Centers orbit of potential employers. What I WILL do is criticize a branch of a system that was designed to support honest people sincerely seeking employment. TWO phone calls. I successfully spoke to two people regarding my participation in the reemployment services program. But because of either a lack of departmental communication or empathy, my benefits which MIGHT have been affected, WERE affected.
