I believe many moms will empathize with this... being a stay at home mom, the time to do things for yourself is very minimal. Literally my ONLY chance to do something for me nowadays, is a hair appointment. Living far away from family and any type of support system, I depend on my husband to watch my 3 kids on a Saturday to get my hair done every once and awhile. Because my husbands job has been very demanding lately, he has had to work some Saturdays, causing me to cancel hair appointments for the last 4 months. My mom is in town visiting and granted me the opportunity to get my hair done today and watch my two older kids. My sleeping baby was strapped to me in a carrier when I happily went into my long awaiting hair appointment. In which case I was told to leave bc I had my baby with me (who was asleep in a carrier- i did not bring in a kid who would be running around and being crazy). I left nearly in tears because this very special moment and time for myself that Ive been waiting for months for, was denied, simply for being a mom. This is the kind of thing that makes the balance of remaining yourself and being a mom so difficult. I will be finding a different salon thats more accommodating for different people and lifestyles. This establishment is not family friendly, baby friendly, or mom friendly. Being a mom with no support system is hard enough- give her a break and let her get her hair done.

I moved to the area and the most difficult thing to do is to find a good hair stylist. Since I have always gone to an Aveda Salon in Canada I thought that this should be comparable and it was the famous Douglas Js. What a disappointment. I went to this salon for 3 haircuts and 3 highlights. I get my hair cut about every 4 - 5 weeks and highlights every 6 weeks. The girls are more concerned about hiding out in the back break room than interacting with their clients. My last hair cut with Lindsey lasted about 10 minutes. When I commented that it was the fastest haircut I have ever had, she told me she was just "that good". What a smug comment for the worst hair cut I have ever had. I had hair cut last week at a different salon and I should have taken pictures, the bottom, bangs, and sides were cut uneven. She must have been high! I just got a highlight last night and the new stylist showed me sections that had not been highlighted in months ... there was at least 3.5 inches of growth. BTW the stylist at Douglas J was named Andrea. What a shame this salon turned out to be. If you are considering going there I would discourage you. My dogs stylist at Animal Crackers would do a better job! My new stylist Sherry B at CJ Roberts Salon and Day Spa in Hartland is very good and worth the drive.

Seriously, they cant answer the phone?? I have to speak to a generic answering service person to tell them where my stylist works, which site Im trying to schedule at, every time I call?? The Douglas J scheduling system is really depersonalized and infuriating. It is not at all in keeping with a service-oriented salon and really makes it feel like your salon service is just a cattleyard. Gone are the days when they used to offer a hand massage or scalp massage with your service. And some of the furniture in the Liberty Street salon is so disgusting you really dont want to sit down while waiting on your service. Thus far my stylist has been good enough to put up with these frustration and with the Aveda product sales pitches, but Im not sure how much longer my patience will hold out.

Ive been going here for a couple years and have been pleased with most of the services. Until recently when I asked for a trim with layers around my face. The stylist seemed uncomfortable working with thick hair and did not listen to me. The cut is unbalanced and choppy. It looks like a mullet/bob. I did not ask for such a dramatic change, and the stylist did not check with me before cutting so much off. After it was clear I was unhappy, she was unprofessional in interacting with me. The manager tried to help but there was nothing she could do because of how short it had been cut. I didnt pay for the service, but I wont go back to Ryan (the stylist) or Aveda again.

Its never easy finding a new salon and stylist, especially when youre new to the city! Having always gone to an Aveda concept salon, I figured the Douglas J would be a great place to start. Since I wear my hair short, I requested a stylist who does well with short hair, and Ryan did a wonderful job! She worked very intently and paid close attention to all the details. I will definitely have Ryan cut my hair again :) The hand massage was a relaxing treat, too!! Side note: this is a non-tipping salon

I cant recommend this place highly enough. I went in here looking to fix a recent bad haircut, and I got more than what I hoped for. Kristin and Krystal helped me out with the situation and I left glowing. Im a guy that normally goes to barber shops. But the service here -- scalp and shoulder massage, wash and dry, attentive and detailed cut, friendly service, and most importantly a great haircut -- left me blown away. Guys, its worth your while to check this place out. Ill be going back.

Looked for an aveda salon in Ann Arbor and found this one. I did a major chop and cut 10 inches off my hair! Looks fantastic and I couldnt be happy. Totally recommend! Cant recall her name but she was wonderful and recommended a place to donate my hair. Went back about six weeks later, got a trim from Crystal and it looks fantastic. SO pleased with both experiences and will continue to bring my service there! If I could give it more than five stars, I totally would.

I always enjoy the experience and service that I receive at the salon. It took 3 hours to do my daughters multiracial and extremely thick and curly hair, so I splurged and got my hair cut while I waited. I have received several compliments about my hair from the moment I walked into my home as well to when I walked into my work this morning, including a coworker who asked if she could have my hair. Ive come here for years, and will continue to do so.

Such a rejuvenating and relaxing atmosphere. Classic Aveda scents in the air, clean and inviting, not that busy loud salon feeling that overwhelms you when you walk in. This is a bright and airy art studio where hair and makeup are the modes of expression. Tess and Cristina truly embody artists that have a drive to create and perfect their craft as an art form. So inspiring to watch them work- I learned so much and felt so lucky to be their subject!
