My daughter danced at Metro for several years and then went on to dance at college and beyond. Our experience was extremely positive. The competition program was right where it needed to be - we werent expecting her to be prepped to go on to Broadway but we certainly wanted her time and our money investment to be worth the effort. She had a solid technique based experience that also allowed her the time to maintain excellent grades, work and be involved in high school activities. Her technique was at the level where she was accepted into a college dance program that takes less than 20% of the applicants it receives - so she definitely learned something strong from Metro. Costs were very reasonable and opportunities to fundraise helped to offset the costs. There were other studios closer to us, but we liked the environment, level of teaching and costs at Metro better. I actually did check out Larkin, but it was too cost prohibitive with the extra competitions and trips that were expected. Costumes were horribly expensive and were handed out unfinished with the parents expected to do a lot of detail work (this came from talking to other parents there). As far as avoiding the "good competitions" - well, that is all very subjective. If you are only dancing to get trophies then you are missing the point of dancing. Its not as black and white as "1+1=2". You really are at the discretion of judges who like a certain look or style better than another. Some of the best competitions to watch are those with small studios that might not be doing quad turns, but they are having so much fun that you cant help but have a good time. Ive seen excellent dancing/choreography at competitions at all levels. I also saw firsthand the individual caring that Metro gave if a student needed extra attention, guidance or if there was any indication that a health issue was arising. I think the great thing is that there are lots of dance studios in the Twin Cities with many options for families to participate in this fun activity. They all have their strengths and weaknesses -- they all have supporters and detractors. Hopefully people will give each studio a chance without being too swayed by negative reviews as it may very well turn out to be the right match for your child. It sounds like the other reviewers found a match better suited for them elsewhere and that is exactly what everyone needs to do.

When we moved here from a small town 15 years ago, I didnt know that much about dance let alone the studio. My neighbors introduced me to Metro Dance a few years later and Im glad they did. I wish we would have known earlier. The cost was very reasonable and the owners and teachers were very nice and helpful in shaping my daughter into the beautiful dancer she became. She started in 5th grade and through the teachers help, was able to improve greatly her posture, technique and style. Metro Dance was a very positive influence on her life that she would never trade for anything. The teachers are very experienced and knowledgable. They attend various workshops to keep up to date on new techniques and styles which shows in there award winning choreography. Some people may think its all about the turns, but as you can see from dance shows, its about the content and how the dancer portrays the music and emotion. Metro Dance does a very good job of teaching this as well as emphasizing technique. My daughter has since been off to college, but I still enjoy attending adult classes and helping out at the studio. Metro Dance is like a second family to me. They have always treated me and my family with the greatest respect.

Metro considers itself a "family dance studio." This is code word for "our studio is great for little kids, but fails to provide a solid training or challenging choreography for competition dancers." In many ways, they are stuck in the 90s with their choreography...too jazzy, too many turned in pirouettes and stick-straight arms. The atmosphere was great and I made a lot of friends, but I had to switch to Larkin because my family could no longer afford Metro (which nickel and dimed us hardcore) Larkin offered better and more challenging choreography for a fraction of the price. Basically, if youre enrolling a little kid in classes, Metro is great. If you want a more intensive, technically based training, you wont get it at Metro. Theres a reason they avoid the competitions that the best studios attend (ie. Showbiz, Primetime) and settle for the easy ones (Midwest Starz, etc)

Metro is a great dance studio for all levels, from very advanced competition lines to recreational for begginers. Metro is a very fun and has a very family friendly envirement! Metro has made me such a good dancer and has made many other stars as well. the staff is great and the costume lady is amazing! This lady makes all the competition costumes from scratch! Overall, Metro is one of best Dance places center out there, with over 1,000 high point award winning dances. Metro is and will always be my second home!

My son has been a Metro dancer for 8 years now and couldnt be happier! He loves to dance and his teachers have always made sure that hes working hard to develop to his own potential but they also make sure hes having fun. We have always felt welcome and that thats where we belong. He will be a part of the Metro team as long as he wants to dance.

We had a very bad experience with the Tap & Dance summer class. Huge class size, impatient instructor, basically no warm-up and went straight to the dance moves, for a 4 yr old, can be quite intimidating and demanding. Our little one cried leaving the class, seemed really sad. She used to love music and dancing in the first place.

We are in our first year at Metro Dance and we love it. The instructor (Danica) is wonderful and so great with the kids. We could not have gotten a better dance teacher! Looking forward to many more years here!

Had our 6 year old in this program for 1 year. Huge class sizes and no individual attention. They are constantly raking you over the coals for additional expenses....really ridiculous. Look somewhere else.
