I had a terrible experience with NIKKI last week Sept 3rd 2016. I made an appointment with Nikki for Saturday to have my hair completly colored a lighter brown to cover up some grey. Then I wanted a balayage/ombre of a even lighter brown. I was scheduled to see Nikki at 9am. I arrived a little early and requested a nail appointment for my daughter. She went off to see her nail specialist. Nikki was almost 20 minutes late coming out to get me. It bothered me, but I blew it off and tried to have a good appointment. I explained to Nikki what I wanted. I showed her a few pictures of what I liked. I explained that I did not want to go blonde. I do not like streaks in my hair. I dont like the way it looks. I also told her my hair is naturally curly but the curls have fizzled out. She seemed to understand. I was a little nervous because she had no examples of her work on her Charles Penzone profile. She told me she had worked there for 11 years and was a director, so I trusted her. My hair is a very dark brown. one step above from being black. She started by bleaching the ends of my hair. Then she put foils on the top parts of my hair. After sitting for a while she washed it out and put toner on. She seemed rushed by 11am. I told her I had to leave no later than 12:30. I thought that was plenty of time to straighten my hair. She decided to style my hair curly and started putting product in my hair. She kept bunching it. Then she put me under the dryer for a while. The curls were not working. I could tell she was trying to fix it, but she said that a straightened style was not included in the cost... Thats a first for me. She turned me around and what I saw I was not happy with. I told her I did not want the streaks and it was much to blonde. At that point she couldnt style it straight with a flat iron because too much product had been added and it was turning into a frizzy mess. She said she wished she could start all over... not what I wanted to hear. I got upset and asked her to stop touching me. I wanted to leave. She told me not to be so emotional about my hair. I was so angry with her at this point that I started to walk out. She walked me to the desk and told me I should wear my hair curly or the streaks and color wouldnt look right... hmm really? You mean your suggestion to fix the problem is to just wear my hair curly until it is fixed or grows out?? She gave me some more suggestions that only angered me more. I paid 188.00, sat for 3.5 hours for the worst color and customer service I ever received. I was set up with a same day appointment to get the color fixed for free... I saw Ivy in Dublin Charles Penzone, who was very understanding about the situation. She did her absolute best to fix my hair color. She toned down the blonde and remove most of the blonde streaks at the top of my head. She didnt have time to really fix my hair, but I appreciated her efforts. In the end it was just still too blonde for me. I went to Salon Lofts with Jodi Smith. She fixed my color and gave me the natural looking balayage that I asked for the first time! Overall, I will never go back to Charles Penzone. I would not suggest seeing Nikki if you want anything challenging done to your hair. She was either not listening or doesnt know how to properly balayage/color hair. In a perfect world Id get my money back for a waste of time and heartache.

This review is coming a little late since Ive gotten my hair done at Charles Penzones, but for the sake of other Blondes out there Ive decided to share my experience. I was new to Columbus and I am very picky about who does my hair, so I wanted a place that had a stylist with lots of experience. I require at least 7 years experience and I thought Charles Penzone would be an excellent choice…was I so wrong. Just to give you an idea, Im an ash blonde, with tons of hair that falls down to the middle of my back, and I usually like to get very light, yellow blonde highlights. If you are a blonde then you know how hard it is to have healthy long hair, when you dye it this bright. Well it took me years, but at the time of my apt. my hair was very healthy and smooth to the touch. When I went in for my apt. you could clearly see my roots, and I wanted a full highlight to hide my roots and to brighten my hair. They used 50 foils, for all my hair, and got me in and out in an hour. Normally my hair takes anywhere from 2.5hrs to 3hrs to highlight properly. So when I was “finished”, my roots still showed and I could barely tell that my hair was highlighted at all. Well after paying $175 and mauling over the quality of the job for a day, I decided to call back ask for my hair to be fixed. I wasn’t pleased with the outcome and the manager told me to come back to have my hair fixed. I was apprehensive of course, but I told myself I should be fair and give them another try. Biggest mistake EVER! The same girl that did my hair the 1st time, dyed my hair again, but just the roots…and turned just my roots ORANGE! Never in my life has anyone turned my hair orange. And the best part about this was that she said, “oh that’s looks a bit warm”. Hmm “a bit warm” is a horrible disaster to me. Now with my roots orange, and the rest of my hair color a dark blonde, I looked fantastic right? Oh and not to mention my hair was fried from all the dye. So with my horizontal, two-toned hair color I had to get my hair fixed again. Obviously it was not going to be anyone who worked at Charles Penzone, but the person who got the lucky pleasure to fix Charles Penzone’s mess was a Godsend. She spent 8hrs fixing my hair. Of course after so much damage done I could only be dyed so much. So it still took about a year for the copper hue to come out, and I had tons of deep conditioning treatments. I also stayed away from drying, straightening and curling my hair as much as possible (for the first 6 months), mainly for fear my hair would burn off. So now that it’s been 2 years since I’ve had my hair done at Charles Penzone my hair is finally healthy again. But the point of my review is buyer beware.

I had good expectations for this place. I was wrong. Never offered a drink until near the end of my appt. The girl I had laughed at my pinterest photo of what I wanted done and even invited a manager over to lecture me about how my hair will never look like that for a very long time, after many oil treatments, expensive, from them. Thing is, yes I have thick hair, but its a dark brown with waves. I wanted a medium brown. Not much of a stretch! ! Almost walked out, I felt so belittled. Even had to sign a waiver. Wtf. I stayed because I just wanted it done. The girl did not give me bangs like I wanted. By the end of the appt. I just didnt care anymore. This was back in November and Id recommend going somewhere else. Theyre stuck-up, judgemental, and highly overpriced. Go get your hair cut at great clips, you get more respect and charged less. No chance of ever going back, I dont want anyone reaching out to me. Thank you.
