This gym is great and for those who truly want to be stronger and more confident. In the small classes you get the advice and technique given to you at a great deal. The owners, Tony and Mira, are rad and really pride themselves in their gym and customers--which they treat like family. I work with their other trainer Arryn, a lot, and he has really helped me push myself and is an awesome addition to the team. The equipment is the best and they keep the gym very clean. I do kettlebell and the Strength and Conditioning classes, and the time Ive devoted to that has helped me be better at my job, but even if you arent a police officer or steel worker, you will really enjoy the gained muscle and showing off your chin-up or snatching ability at company functions. Plus, your partner will really love feeling those hard glutes, swole arms, and tight core. The group schedule is really catered to the normal 8-5 business day, with classes offered before work, lunch, and evening. This doesnt always work for me, but Tony and Mira (Ill add again are way rad) have worked with me in my alternative work schedule, because of my dedication to IS. If they had the open gym times again to get my missed classes in, I would really love it. For new members, Id also say, give it some time. Even on the trial periods IS offers may not be long enough to really see the benefits it WILL bring. it can be hard to jump in and start doing a push press or deadlift without feeling a little silly or weak. Youll often be in a group with members who have been at IS since it opened or some who have only been there a few weeks, so give yourself time. Just be open to the coaching and your new teammates to help you build. Strength building takes a long time, so dont expect overnight results, but you should enjoy coming to Industrial Strength daily.

I started at Industrial Strength a little over a year ago as a very unfit 30 something with no knowledge of strength training. I was depressed, had no energy and generally felt pretty lousy most of the time. I knew I needed to make a change so I set up a time to check the gym out and was immediately impressed by the facility and the owners (Mira and Tony). The gym is exceptionally clean, organized and outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment. Tony, Mira and the other two coaches (Arryn and Adam) are knowledgeable, down to earth and genuinely interested in making you stronger. I’ve learned a great deal since I started and continue to learn something new pretty much every time I’m there. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that I look forward to and enjoy each and every class. Safety and good form are emphasized above all else. The coaches are careful to watch everyone in class to make sure they are executing the lifts correctly and they are able to provide helpful feedback for novices and experienced lifters alike. Learning how to properly squat, deadlift, bench press and military press has improved my life immensely. Like most worthwhile things in life, getting stronger takes time, patience, and effort. It definitely won’t happen overnight, but I can say without a doubt that I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and I feel better than I have in years. Finally, one of my favorite things about the gym is the atmosphere. I’ve made some good friends at IS and it feels like a second family. From my experience, big egos and bad attitudes simply don’t exist here. All of the coaches and other members are positive, supportive, and always ready to cheer you on when things get tough.

I love this gym. Heres why: Knowledgeable Trainers: Form and safety are emphasized. Explanations are clear and questions encouraged. Small classes means they know me well enough to make sure I am being challenged while avoiding injury. I have gotten measurably stronger since I joined Industrial Strength and I credit it to the excellent training team. Excellent Equipment: I feel spoiled by the quality and quantity of equipment at Industrial Strength. Everything is orderly and easy to find. The gym, bathrooms and shower are clean and all the little details accounted for (extra hair ties in the bathrooms). Culture and Community: I love that during class, everyone cheers for each other. Theres a healthy sense of competition, but that is never overshadowed by the shared desire to see your teammates get better. And new members are welcomed with the same enthusiasm. I cant recommend Industrial Strength enough, and do often. I encourage you to check it out.

Wonderful clean gym. Go for a group class. They have small group classes. Not your usual group class. Very team oriented and supportive. They stress proper form and safety. Not good at constructive criticism, very CYA; need to improve on listening to customers. Katherine Johnson-Byrne is a great trainer for motivation. Will work you hard. Good form. Not effective at planning or followup. It is your responsibility to remind her. Very off the cuff. Never injured working with this trainer. Spent over $25,000 in training over the years with this trainer. Great technically; not good at the soft skills, you are just another client. Lots of unexpected landmines eg If you participate in local running races you must make known which ones you have signed up for in advance so there is no accidental contact outside the gym.) Good at making promises, not good at keeping them. Do not give feedback, you will be talked over and bullied.

Industrial Strength Gym is the best gym in Portland. The owners, Mira and Tony, are top of their craft -- offering individual training and classes. The classes have a team-like approach to them that I have never experienced before in a gym -- an amazing environment in which to train. And, my individual training with Mira has been incredible -- all of friends have seen a difference in me in a few short months.
