I first discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu a little over 6 years ago, I was living in Mesquite and started training at a little gym a few minutes from our apartment. I was only there for about 5 months and then we moved. After moving I didnt train for a while, I had some friends who where MMA fighters and they would invite me to roll with them every once in a while, but I definitely wasnt training consistently and I definitely wasnt improving. Almost 5 years later in September of 2014 I found Alvarez BJJ. I originally went there just looking for a place for my 2 kids to start training. When I went to check them out they said the three of us could try the free 30 day trial. Right from the go I loved it! The high level training, the high level instruction, the positive energy, the welcoming atmosphere, it was all amazing! Something about this place made me feel great everytime I walked in, something about this place made me want to be better, made me want to push harder and made want to keep coming back for more. Sometimes after class I would be absolutely exhausted, but I always felt better when I did come, than when I didnt. About two weeks into our free trial I decided to sign the 3 of us up( me and my 2 kids) and I began to train as much as possible. At the time we lived about 45 minutes away in Glenn Heights, me and my kids were there about 5 times a week. In December 2014 I did my first tournament with Alvarez BJJ at NAGA. I was in the ultra heavyweight division at the time since I did weigh about 300lbs. In January of 2015 I set a couple of goals, the biggest one being to lose 50lbs before my 30th birthday in June. In February I got serious about working out and eating healthy, me and the whole family made some major changes. We started eating healthier and with the help of Mr. Jordan Shepler I added strength and conditioning to my weekly training schedule. I was feeling great training BJJ 5-6 days a week and doing strength and conditioning 3 days a week. The dietary changes and the added strength and conditioning made a huge difference in my weight loss and my cardio. I was feeling great! In June I achieved my goal of losing 50lbs before my birthday! And by September I had lost even more weight around 70lbs all together and I received 4 stripes on my belt. Ive been training consistently at Alvarez BJJ for 2 years now. Ive lost about 90lbs Im an assistant coach for the kids class and Im in the best shape and the healthiest Ive been in my life. I can truly say that I love BJJ and can say with confidence that Im sure that this is something that Ill be doing for the rest of my life. Jiu-jitsu has truly changed my life. Yesterday on September 19th 2016 I received my blue belt Im very happy to have achieved this goal. Ive come along way, Im very proud. But I still have a long way to go. I will continue to work hard and train and continue to improve and grow in jiu-jitsu and in life. I wanted to say thank you to my wife Denice Vasquez for always supporting me and my goals. I love you babe! Thank you to everyone at Alvarez BJJ for being great friends, coaches and training partners. And a huge thank you to my coach, mentor and friend Prof. Danny Alvarez Bjj for always pushing me to work harder and be better.

What can I say that hasnt been said before?? The overwhelmingly positive testimonials on here are pretty much spot on, especially the ones about the awesome Coach Alvarez and his upper belt instructors. They are all very decorated and skilled practitioners, and you shouldnt worry if your kid is going to learn Jiu Jitsu here. They most definitely will. Admittedly, I didnt know much about BJJ when we brought my daughter in for the 30 day free trial. We gave it a go because it was literally 5 minutes from our house. We ended up signing her up that very same week because I could tell this was a kids program unlike any other we had experienced before....and trust me, we have done it all from gymnastics to swimming, basketball, t-ball, soccer, jazz dancing/ballet, even Tae kwon Do. The kids program is well structured with Jiu Jitsu being taught by Coach Alvarez and his upper belts. However, its not all about Jiu Jitsu here! They put a lot of emphasis on not only exercise and proper nutrition, but excellence in character and integrity. It shows in the way they coach, encourage, and even lecture the children. Sometimes my daughter doesnt want to go because she knows shes going to have to put in some work on Jiu Jitsu nights. However, shes always happy when she gets there! She gets her second wind and sees her friends all putting in the same work. They commiserate, sweat and laugh together, and she leaves the academy in a better place than when she arrived. One particular night she wanted to stay home and watch Netflix and started whining about how I just dont understand how hard it is.....so you know what?...I enrolled. I wanted to walk this journey with her and see how hard this really was. Well, the adult class is basically the kids class, but on steroids. I knew it would be a challenge, but I thought it would be easy for me because Im a pretty fit 36 year old. I can tell you, its the most technical and taxing thing Ive ever done. I cant just show up and mentally check out like I can in the gym or on a race course. Ive been at it for 2 months and I feel like Im gaining new ground/skills each day, but its ground that I have to really fight for. Each class pushes me to WANT to do better! You dont have to be fit to do this because everyone is working towards different goals here. Its hard being a white belt, and even harder being a white belt with no stripes, but I havent run into any overgrown egos here. I love it so much that I finally cancelled my fancy gym membership because Im literally here almost every day trying to improve my skills. My husband was even inspired to join after seeing me come home drenched in sweat and exhausted after training. Everyone Ive encountered thus far has been pretty darn amazing. You just have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, and that starts with stepping onto the mats.
