I was visiting Austin for a week for a conference and bought a week pass here. I always like training at more serious and hardcore gyms, even when I travel. Although to many newbie lifters, hardcore gyms can seem intimidating, if you come in to do work, these are really great atmospheres where members get to know each other and support each other regardless of goal (just get in shape, lose some pounds, or something more extreme like competitive powerlifting or bodybuilding). The gym is an old school facility. Much of the equipment could be in a fitness museum. Belts, chalk, lots of racks and platforms, 1980s era bodybuilding posters from local shows give it an old school vibe. However, it is kept clean, which is not always the case at some old school gyms. Solid gym.

Most gyms these days are gimmicky with their costs, and you pay for a whole sales staff with your dues - so of course theyre expensive. Hyde park gym sells itself by being brutally honest about what you need in a gym to get in shape. Many of the machines are aging, but many have been modified or even hand built to provide a range of options not seen in even the really big gyms. On first glance, youd think that this was a power lifting gym (Olympic lifting platforms, etc..), no girls or wusses allowed - but the reality is far from that, its full of men and women of all ages striving for all sorts of different fitness goals. Youre just as likely to see a middle aged woman doing squat cleans as you are a twenty-something year old guy. Its great.

Ive been working out at Hyde Park Gym for the past few months and I have to agree with the rest of the 5-star reviews here, its awesome. No frills, no show-offs, no "Im in better shape than you" attitudes, just people trying to get better. Everybody Ive encountered so far has been extremely nice and welcoming. I especially like that they open the doors up and let a breeze come through - it feels more natural that way for me instead of being inside a high-tech open room that has a TV everywhere you look. If youre looking to get in better shape, dont want to deal with anything extra, want a convenient location, and simply work out - this gym is for you. I dont think youll ever be disappointed working out here.

Great gym. Went to it twice while visiting Austin. True powerlifing gyms are few and far between. There was lots of equipment you dont see in most gyms (plenty of squat racks, thank god) but plenty of stuff for even the casual gym goer. It was nice to see a good mixture of men and women when I went which was nice to see. All of who seemed to take things pretty seriously but most importantly it was a positive motivating environment to work in. I wish there was something like this in Houston were I work. If I ever end up moving to Austin Ill be sure to live nearby to this gym.

A well equipped but very stinky gym with guys walking around with their shorts rolled up primping and preening. There was not any loud music being played which was a big plus because I do not like loud music. They sell drinks and snacks but too many unpaying preeners hanging around that area blocking the counter so I didnt spend any money. I worked out there 20 years ago and returned recently for a day visit. It was better back in the day.

I joined Hyde Park Gym several weeks ago, and havent regretted my decision once. I look forward to working out in a place where everyone is friendly while simultaneously focused on doing their own thing. The staff is a big plus. Drop the shiny chain gyms with initiation fees and disgruntled employees, and support an Austin original.

A hardcore gym. If youre a bodybuilder, olympic lifter, or powerlifter (professional or otherwise) then you should be aware this is pretty much the only option in Austin. And its a great option. Its no Planet Fitness, you go to Hyde Park to work. If that sounds appealing, you shouldnt think twice before signing up.

They dont require a contract, so thats nice, and they have pretty good rates, but only if you pay for a year in advance (which is basically the same as a contract). Its very relaxed there and most people are friendly. My own quarrel is that it doesnt appear to be the cleanest gym sometimes.

No military discount (you are a gym in the biggest military state in the union lol). Was very crowded with most the equipement not being in that good of shape which is fine, but not at the prices they charge for membership. Not a bad gym, just not a good one

Hands down the best gym in Austin. If youre serious about working out but dont want to go to a gym just to be seen (Golds etc), this is the place. Great trainers ask about Ryan Rhudy

I started going here a few weeks ago. Its a great gym for the serious lifter: everything you need, motivated and focused gym-goers, and not full of fancy gimmicks.
