In this day and age of Netflix, Hulu, etc, etc, it might seem odd to still go out of ones way to hit a video rental store. Hell, Im a film critic and get most films sent to me in the mail for free to review, and yet still, theres something about an excellently run rental house that makes me want to set up camp for several hours and just wander around through a labyrinth of the history of film, any title of which can come home with you for but a meager sum. With only 3 real locations left in Austin worth visiting for the cinemareligious experience Ive described, my favorite still remains Vulcan Video South. While its not as big as your two other options (Vulcan North and I Heart Video), its got that je ne sais quoi; that sense of warmth; that feeling that real love went into the place. Vulcan features an excellent choice of classics and nicely chosen updates into the world of HD (blu-ray), hand written recommendations for titles on the shelves, unique concessions, and most importantly, a staff of cineastes with personalities that dont make you feel like an idiot if you dont know who Ernst Lubitsch, Stuart Gordon, or Beat Takeshi is. In fact, bring up one of those names and youll likely get a rush of excitement coming from the young staff members wholl gladly take you down an isle and into an introductory explanation of where to get started with said filmmaker.

I LOVE vulcan video... almost as much as I ❤ video. I live very close to where the south congress one was and then they opened up one more south off of 71/Russell dr. So I called the new vulcan video to ask if they had a certain couple of movies....once I called I was put hold, very sternly by some female who didnt introduce herself, which was fine because it was Labor day and 3pm so I figured they were pretty busy. Then she gets back on the phone and I ask her if they have some movie and she said they didnt so I asked if maybe the other location might have it, so instead of her offering to contact them or try to give me their number to call them she hung up in the middle of me trying to thank her and ask her about another movie.... 3 thumbs down to poor customer service on this perfect movie watchin rainy day.

This is a video store that was made for Austin. Keep Austin Weird definitely applies to Vulcan Video. There is a huge selection of eclectic and varied videos. Some of the videos will make your skin crawl, but others are unique and can be found no where else around town. If you want to see a movie that isnt the stock Netflix selection, Vulcan video is the place for you.

Staff always on-hand & happy to assist, answer Film questions or try to find out the information inquired about. Still intimate & seemed to have same if not more space inside of new location. A little sprucing up with posters, Movie memorabila & film stuff would or could help out? Maybe, just saying. Great to have then conveniently South A-town

The absolute best place to find foreign films. Only once did they not have what I was looking for (The gypsy movie Black Cat, White Cat, which they said, humorously enough, was stolen). Im afraid places like this will fall by the wayside with the advent of digital distribution. Shame.

Great if you want that old feeling of walking in the video store searching for a movie to find. Oh that warm feeling. They have great selection and the best classics. Also the friendly couple that work there is a great plus. A must visit since video stores are rarer than ever now.

This place is a movie buffs dream. They have a huge selection of films, ranging from commercial Blockbusters to esoteric foreign indies. Very independent, with reasonable prices. I feel like I could spend hours in here. I cant speak to the Blu-Ray selection, though.

The guys are one of the last real video stores left in Austin. Between I <3 Video and Vulcan there are no others! Everyone at Vulcan south are super nice and their colelction of independent documentaries is beyond believe (everything from SXSW is there!).

Who needs Netflix? Vulcan is the reason that I dont bother with Netflix. When you have a selection this big with the price to rent this low (not to mention BOGO days), I have no desire for Netflix. Love Vulcan!

Vulcan Video pretty much has everything from pop films to the sick and twisted. Sometimes it helps to ask for assistance when looking for movies because they organize by genres as well as countries and directors.

But not taking away from the north locale. They have the older and obscure movies that corporate video stores simply cant compete with as well as all the new releases. Locally owned with amore-than-helpful staff!

I could absolutely LIVE in this store. I am a huge film geek; and this store meets my every geeky need. The rental prices are excellent and their staff is highly knowledgeable about film.

Love this place! Great selection of movies, staff is really helpful, and a convenient location. We usually go on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, when you can get two rentals for the cost of one.

Hidden gem on Guadalupe St in Austin. This store puts Blockbuster to shame. Great selection, prices, location. Who says movie stores are not needed any more? This place does it right.

These days it can be hard to get ahold of some of the older awesome movies out there, at least if you dont want to resort to piracy. You can still find them at Vulcan Video, though!

If youre looking for a particular DVD, this is the spot. They have such a wide variety of films. Im a big fan of the directors wall. The staff is also very friendly.
