If you fancy this store because of its selection, go to Vidiots at Pico and 3rd in Santa Monica -- MUCH better selection, and MUCH better staff. Do NOT do business with this squalid dive. On December 31, 2008, at approximately 8:30 p.m., I was in Cinefile with my 10-year-old son looking for childrens videos, of which the store has a good number of titles. While my son and I were searching, I heard one of the store employees, an overweight and pallid man in his 20s, use much profanity in conversation with a slightly gothish female employee of similar age and pallor, including the s--- and f--- words. He was sharing with her is enthusiasm for punk music videos by playing them on the stores video player, with the sound turned up enough that conversation with my son was strained when the music was playing. This employee chose to play one tune that repeated the f--- word a number of times. With a several DVDs in hand set to rent, I asked the employee if he would be kind enough to take into account that there was a young child in the store and refrain from playing videos suffused in foul language. His response: "Dude, this is not a family establishment." This was an unintelligent thing to say, considering the large number of childrens titles. Notably, I and my son were the only customers in the store for the approximately fifteen minutes we were there searching movie titles. And this cretin, demonstrating arrogance and perhaps making a lame attempt to show off to the female employee, successfully alienated his one potential customer. I will NEVER do business with this store again, and given the lack of customers, I doubt this loser enterprise will outlast the new year. Unfortunately the lower Westwood area is lacking in video-rental choices. We have un-family-friendly Cinefile, with its ridiculous and arrogant employee (note to management: fire this cad immediately!), and Hollywood Video, with its crappy selection and, in spite of this depressing fact, surprisingly long lines due to understaffing (i.e. corporate greed). Looks like its time for NetFlix or a DVR. So long video rental stores. You were cool in the 70s and 80s, succumbed to corporate predation in the 90s and 2000s, and will be gone by the 2010s. If you must patronize a video store to find obscure titles, go to Vidiots -- BOYCOTT CINEFILE.

2015 Turns out I loved this business enough to BUY it. Im the new owner and its a whole new feel in the shop. Come check us out. Customer service and a helpful attitude is our number one priority. 2013 Why rent from an indie video rental? Because you WILL find movies that blow you away that you would never even have heard of otherwise. Cinefile introduced me to the erotic brilliance that is Randy Metzger, the better version of DRIVE, entitled BULLHEAD, and the low budget, high quality storytelling that is DREDD. I love these guys and you will too. Netflix just aint enough for the true movie lover.

Absolutely one of the best video stores Ive visited. Knowledgeable staff, fantastic selection, and just because some lady with a caps-lock issue got her panties in a bigass knot and wrote a book because her kid heard swears (yeah, Im sure thats the first time your delicate flower was exposed to the f-bomb) doesnt mean you need to visit inferior shops. Maybe some of the staff is a little rough around the edges, but at least theyre not sanitized drones, man. Thumbs up. Five stars.

The guys that work here are so knowledgeable. Everytime Ive been researching a topic they always point me to new and interesting finds. Unless your a super film nerd it can be a bit intimidating trying to navigate this store but if there is something in particular you want the guys here are friendly and will help you find it. Otherwise I think their category system is great as Ive stumbled onto many gems thanks to it.

Cinefile Video has been a pillar of Houston music as long as I can remember. Ive learned about new music from here, seen great live music from here, buy all my music from here and love the new(ish) location! The staff does a great job of helping if you need it and let you alone to just browse for hours if you need it. My only wish is that it would be bigger!

I absolutely love this place. They have such a big collection! They also do exchanges too if you have items in your collection that you want to share with the world. Ive gotten at least five used DVDs from this place. Ive also given them at least eight from my collection.

The best place to look for new or old video games in L.A., outside of the internet. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. More than fair pricing on sales and buy backs. My only complaints is the parking in that area is just bad in general.

Cinefile is a diamond in the rough! One of the last of a dying breed, the independent video store. They have super specific sections like PT Anderson or de Palma, criterion, you name it. Really fun to check this place out.
