my personal opinion from my one visit to this place: dont go here if youre in the military. A service member friend of mine asked me to hand walk a certified letter to the gym to cancel her membership. She had been trying to cancel it for the past two months, as she left with about a week notice and was not able to "arrange an appointment with the manager" a week in advance, as the policy requires (keep in mind, the manager John Medrano only is present during random times on Wednesday, or by appointment, as stated by the on-duty leader I spoke to). My friend was out $600 as they wouldnt cancel it without the letter (she had sent them one prior to my visit, but they claim they never received it) that i brought to them. As soon as I asked to speak with a manager about cancelling a membership they declared, "you may be a good friend but you cant cancel a membership here". i showed them the envelope with the letter and immediately both the women at the front desk (one whose role was assistant manager but claimed she was just a leader, Danielle Duran) began claiming that the letter wasnt certified, that it wasnt enough, that I couldnt do it, that the manager wasnt here and so they couldnt do it, and that it wouldnt be cancelled. I told them to look at it before they made any claims, and that my friend was DEPLOYED and not coming back here to cancel a membership. Their response was that they couldnt cancel it. I demanded (again) to speak with the manager, to which the two girls debated on whether or not they should call the manager, before deciding that they would just cancel it themselves, though they also admitted that they shouldnt be doing it. keep in mind, this was done today (August 5, 2014) and they said that my friend would still be charged the full $300 for August even though the certified letter was dated in july, she was deployed at the beginning of June, and she would not be coming back here to the gym. Danielle went on to say that there was no way that she could give the money back, at all. also, for some reason gym membership is handled completely differently than personal training membership, as my friend cancelled her personal trainer (over the phone) prior to her departure, but had to come to the gym for an appointment with the manager to cancel the gym membership. i felt bad for the guy who was signing up for the membership about six feet from me. heed my warning guys, stay away from this place.

I will never go to Fitness Evolution again. This is a horrible facility that is hungry for money. First of all, I was never told about the $39.99 fee per year when I got my membership. And then I was charged that $40 without being told a month after I got my membership. I called to complain and see if I could get reimbursed because I was never told about this, but the lady was very stubborn and not caring AT ALL about the matter. She just kept repeating things like she was reading off a paper and not actually listening to my concerns. This place does NOT care about your financial wellbeing whatsoever. In addition, I have only been at Fitness Evolution for 2 months and I am going to cancel the membership today. However, I will have to pay for December because you have to tell them 30 days in advance. That means that even if I canceled my membership on November 1st I would have to pay for December 1st. I find that ridiculous and unfair. And of course, they did not care about my concerns about that either. Lastly, the trainers made me feel incredibly uncomfortable at the gym. They brought me to their office and pretty much forced me to join their separate training program. They kept egging me on and telling me to call my mom to ask her right then and there. I kept telling them that money was an issue and I could not afford that type of training program. Its crazy expensive by the way. The trainer even gave me his phone number and I could tell he was flirting with me which was also uncomfortable for me. I told him I didnt want to do the program but the next day he came up to me at the gym and asked why I didnt come work out with him. He had no limits. I would rather go to any other facility in Monterey than this one. NO ONE should come here. You can find way better facilities that actually care about your wellbeing financially, physically and mentally. I will try to call corporate about the $40 issue but I heard that you are just sent to a voicemail and nothing gets deal with which is quite unfortunate. I rate this facility as a 1 star. If I could rate it as less, I would.

So many negative reviews on here! So unfortunate. I pay the premium membership price of $20 a month for a boat load of great machines, a ton of free weights and benches (my only complaint is not having more squat racks), unlimited fitness classes, a dry sauna, a pool, a water bed massage table, and a clean locker room. In comparison with the Monterey Sports Center, which charges $55 a month, I think this is a pretty sweet deal. Ive made a good friend with the lead personal trainer there, and I even gave PT a shot. Unfortunately, I couldnt keep up with my schedule and work, so I had to quit. I did have to jump through a few hoops (emails, snail mail, etc) to get my training fees cancelled, but thats expected when you dont take the time to read the fine print. Still friends with the trainer, though! And hell give me advice or spot me when I bump into him at the gym. All in all, if you want a classic gym experience (a little grungy and worn down) without leaving a dent in your wallet, give this spot a chance!

Im reading a lot of reviews complaining about the price of the membership. It is a gym. They provide a service, and that service costs money. Having said that, it is by far the MOST affordable gym in the Monterey area. I have had a membership here for about 6 months now. For the price, I have never been a member of a gym (anywhere in the country) that provides more customer amenities. You have access to a sufficient free-weight area, rooms and rooms of cable machines, plenty of available cardio equipment, not to mention a heated pool and unlimited workout classes (which alone would be an incredible value, highly recommended). They truly have something for everyone. They staff is nice, especially if you take the time to talk to them, very knowledgeable about anything fitness related. Sure, there are nicer gyms in the area which cost 5x as much a month, but if you are looking for a place that covers all the essentials at a great value, there is no other gym that compares. Keep up the good work!

The gym itself is not a bad deal for the price ($15/month + $40/year). In terms of equipment, it is reasonably stocked, except for having no Precor cardio machines. It is just rather run down; its clear the owner hasnt been keeping with the upkeep of the place. So, if you dont mind the shabbiness and just want to hit the machines and weights, its a good deal. Stay far away from the Trainers though!!!!!! (Its separate company from the gym: "Professional" Fitness). They are staggeringly unprofessional and unethical. Dont even talk to them; they only lie to you. They will convince you to join their program, pay thousands with no option to exit it, treat you poorly and unprofessionally, bully you, give you bad nutritional information, and give you workouts which are probably not right for yourself. You can do better looking up YouTube exercise videos.
