I love the spa here, The treatments are not expensive and highly effective, and the staff is wonderful. Because of this, I scheduled a haircut around Christmas as a present to myself, even tho it was crazy expensive for hair. Biggest mistake of my life! The woman who cut my hair was hard to talk to and dismissive. All she had to do was clean up the ends, put a few long layers in, and add Betty Paige style bangs. The layers were almost non-existent, and the bangs were a disaster. She cut them all the way to the crown, and they were uneven, not to mention she took too much hair across the front off, so when it was time to layer them and give them a slight curve, the far sides stuck out like wings! When I told her that I was not overly excited about the way it looked she said "Give it a week or two and it will grow out and look fine." I was so annoyed!! I wore a hat for the next two months, then once they had grown out and were in my face, I went back to show her how I was still unhappy and see what she would do to fix it. She didnt even wash my hair again to see how it would lay, she just tried to pick up a flat iron! She then told me it was "just how my hair was and I shouldnt wear a hat so much.." She did not even apologize for my hair, or offer anything to make it right, not even to wash it out and take another look. She was beyond rude and dismissive. I wanted to light her on fire. The only reason I didnt get nasty back is because I love the spa, and didnt want to burn any bridges, and she just was not worth the energy. GO TO THE SPA INSTEAD. Get a facial, they are the best and only around $70 (cheaper than my haircut) and you will leaving feeling refreshed and relaxed. They also do an excellent salt glow and manicure.

I use to go to this salon a few years ago and had the awesome stylist, Erin. Erin is no longer there, but i went back as my previous experience was very positive. Im biracial and my Isnt very thick, but it is sometimes challenging. I had a keratin treatment done almost a year ago and dyed my hair back to its orginal color, Black. I understand that there were chemicals in my hair from before and Aveda is an eco friendly salon, but the treatment I received received from thr female owner of the salon was humiliating. The stylist (Taylor) was friendly, but suddenly things change. The female owner began asking what was in my hair. After my blow out, i was suppose to get my hair flat ironed, but the owner came up to me in front of the other customers and in front of the entire salon basically stating that the past chemicals in my hair gave the stylist a "massive headache". I apologize to the stylist, but informed the owner that her approach with me was unkind and unprofessional. She also indicated in an indirect way that i could not return until i find out what is my hair. I was the only customer of color there and felt somewhat targeted. The owner assured me that salon services all people. In all honesty, Im not very sensative and i see the best in most people, but this experience was unsettling . I normally just use pure cocunut oil and any treatment in my hair was done months ago. Also, I had the keratin treatment before and had been to aveda salon afterwards, but I was never treated this way. So sad and disappointing. I thought everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, but I dont think this owner feels the same. So unfortunate as I love Avedas products and what the company represents.

Before comming to the US I used to go to a spa every month in my country "Kuwait". As a covered muslim woman It was more convenient for me to go to a spa their because they spas were mostly separated. I heared a lot about Aveda as a "luxurious spa" here so I thought of trying it. I called and asked for a female therapist and I explained everything before booking the appointment. The receptionist was nice and she told me that there are no men on that day. I went there and the treatment was OK. It is not what I am used to. The shower is in a separate room. The massage room was modest and the therapist was talking all the time (which I really hate during massage). I made another appointment for a massage and body treatment before christmas 2011 and asked for the same thing. (no men on my way from the room to the shower, and it is not difficult) they approved. They called the day before the appointment to confirm the appointment and everything was ok. The same day hours before my appointment they called and said there will be a male therapist! And all what I asked for was (just make sure he does not come to the corridor the 30 seconds I spend to move from the room to the shower) their answer was "we cant tell him dont come here. And we cant tell any person not to enter in case they want to!" the actual reason was that he was bringing five customers that day. And I booked my appointment twomweeks ahead but they did not respect it. Anyway, it is not the best spa at all.

in response to Jane i must say that i had a wonderful experience with the owner (sp) not the manager. I had just lost my job (she did not know this) and had decided not to have a christmas this year. I did decide however to get a pedicure after christmas as i was extremely depressed. The owner had to fill in for the manicurist towards the end of my experience and started a conversation with me. During the conversation she learned why i was there. At the end of my experience she handed back to me my credit card reciept having credited my charge back to me and said merry christmas! I cried. When i am back on my feet i will be back to Per Se as often as i can afford to. I am extremely grateful for her kindness. Sometimes we need to be accountable as customers and check our attitudes at the door.

I moved to Hartford from NYC four years ago and consider myself very lucky to have Per Se and its star stylist, Pedro, in West Hartford. From the first day they opened I have been a huge fan. I have recommended Per Se to all of my friends and everyone who has gone has become a repeat customer. The stylists are all top-notch, the vibe is earthy chic and the staff bend over backwards to accomodate requests. Although it does not bill itself as exclusive, it is indeed sometimes difficult to get an appointment. That is because customers know to call in advance to assure they get their favoured stylist. This is not a place you pop into for a wash and set. It is a place where talented professionals who are masters of their craft dedicate time and effort to their clients well-being and happiness.

The stylist at Per Se gave me the worst cut I ever had. I brought her a picture of the hair style I wanted and she barely glanced at it. During my visit she was very rude and seemed annoyed at my presence. I was so dissatisfied that I called the owner and she asked me to come in for another appointment-big mistake. The owner looked at my haircut and said that the stylist did a geat job (not really). Then the owner admitted that one side is in fact much different that the other. Also the owner told me that it is impossible to cut my hair like the picture. (I get this cut all the time) I was also told that I have a cowlick in the back of my hair and it makes it hard to cut. (other stylists have always found a way past that obstacle). Going to Per Se was a bad choice.
