If you are looking for a professional contractor to do your work, then run away from this one. The negative reviews are real and wish we would have taken heed before hiring Howard Shane Shafers company First Coast Contractors. Do your own research too...google Howard Shane Shafer and his company and consider the reviews. Our Negatives: 1. They are johnny on the spot when collecting payment but very much unreliable for doing the actual work on the days promised. What was supposed to take 3 to 4 weeks to complete -- took 4 months! 2. Lack of proper and timely communication. Most times, we initiated the call to find out what the status was, why no workers showed up, etc. Excuses after excuses why no work was going to happen on the days they said it would. Not cool Shane, not cool at all.... 3. Does not come out to oversee work being done by workers to make sure things are being done properly. But quick to come out to pick up a payment. A good contractor will come out on the job periodically to see the quality of his companys work. 4. Final product was not the best or worst. We did not care to point out the issues anymore as we wanted them gone, so we would not have to deal with him anymore. 5. Failed county inspection 2 xs because engineer plan was not followed. 6. Other negative reviews are real as we went through some of the same issues. I wish we would have taken heed. 7. Did not properly clean up. Workers left trash around in yard. Positive: 1. Office Manager (wife) and assistant are pleasant over the phone. 2. Learning experience and we know to put more detailed information in writing for our protection.

This is a one stop shop for home improvements. Shane is a contractor, with vision. It is a family business. They rely on employee supervisors, several talented employees, and subcontractors. Sometimes the communications amongst the team gets broken, but when it does they are quick to satisfy. I am well pleased with our project (outdoor screen room with fireplace), and with the quality of the product Shane uses. The end result is very creative; they literally copied a picture I gave them of a fireplace I liked. Thats the good news. The bad news === there is little planning and follow through on coordinating the subcontractors. I was very worried at the end because St. Johns county failed our project 3 times. The biggest concern I got from the owner was that he needed to have the final payment. We of course, did not pay it until we passed inspection. I was happy with the end result, but if you hire them, get everything in writing and stay on top of them. They have high employee turnover.

My wife and I just used First Coast Contractors to install a brick paver driveway. We were very satisfied with all aspects of the job. From right off the start their communication was great, we received a call from the office to let us know that Shane was on his way prior to our appointment. We went over what we wanted and Shane had some great suggestions that we agreed with and then came up with our estimate. The work was done well and the crew was respectful of our property and the neighborhood. Shane came to the job site at different stages of the work to make sure everything was going according to our agreement. We are thrilled with our new driveway and other elements that were part of the job as well. I would highly recommend using First Coast Contractors

Shane is very good at selling his services, make sure you get EVERY DETAIL IN WRITING. Many promises but not good follow through. More interested in getting paid then making the customer happy. Make sure your job is complete before paying. Used subs to do his work and was not at the job site to make sure things were done as HE promised. The paver foreman Carlos is very creative and we were happy with that part of the job This company is new to St Augustine so we recommend you get other customer recommendations before dealing with them We were not happy with part of our job that most likely should have never been taken on by this company. Great frontage on US1 and it shows beautifully, get references first, hope they do well.

Please get references before using this contractor. We did not get any references before choosing to work with this company. Without threatening litigation and filing a credit card dispute, we would have been out our deposit money after legally canceling the contract within terms. Be careful of whatever he tells you. We cancelled our original design. The owner promised to hold our check while we redesigned. He lied to us and cashed the check before we approved any redesign. At that point we had to pursue disputes and litigation to get our money back.

Shane does NOT pull permits like he is supposed too. He promises items to make the Sale but DOESNT include them in the contract. He does a great job of acting like the victim when told to live up to his word. Make sure ALL DETAILS are in the contract IF you decide to have him do a job for you. The only reason he got 2 stars is his paving subcontractor does a GREAT Job! All around Shanes subcontractors that he works with do great jobs!!!

I am still owed a cover for my BBQ however I have called twice and been by their office twice they have not been there nore returned my call. I wonder if they are still in business. They were more concerned about their money hen talking or making their customers happy.
