Heres some background information on my review and experience at Empire: I called DAYS before coming to verify that the students here were able and WILLING to do natural hair. I understand its not most stylists favorite type of hair to do. They said their students were "advanced" and able to do all types of hair. I, also, asked if they had any natural hair care products. They confirmed that they did. I arrived at 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, as a walk-in, signed my name, and waited to be called. The customer service coordinator informed me that their credit card machine was down; so, I drove to go get cash. FIRST INCONVENIENCE. It took almost two hours after my return from the ATM to actually be paired with a stylist. SECOND INCONVENIENCE. I requested from the stylist, TAKILA, that she use natural hair care products. Her name was not printed on my receipt ,as it should have been. I had to ask her supervisor for her name. She stated, "we dont carry a natural hair care line" with an attitude. I informed her that I was assured prior to coming to empire that there were products to meet my needs. She stated they only had non-sulfate products. I agreed to proceed with the non sulfate products. She, then, brought out 6 (read that again) different liquids in SIPPY cups (read that again, too). I said, "WAIT A MINUTE whats in all that?" This is when she really got angry. I mean lets be real...anyone would want to know what product is going in their hair, especially if they are NOT IN A labeled bottle. (side-eye). She went down the line of all the products she would be using. Sighhhhhhhh THIRD INCONVENIENCE. Now yall know that if youre doing natural hair, youve gotta section it off and comb it out. Ummm This woman attempted to comb my hair, as a WHOLE, as if I had a perm. I requested she section it off and use the comb that I brought from home. Get this....she tells me, " Im not sectioning out your entire head." Im sorry. I was informed you knew how to do natural hair. I was NOT informed that this was YOUR appointment and you were paying. So she runs to her supervisor, Harvey, to complain and ask him to do the work for her. (I kid you not) He actually came back and combed out my hair for her!!! I, also, requested that Takila braid my hair while wet because blow drying damages my hair. She flat out refused to NOT blow dry my hair. She stated it would be easier for her. She had an attitude my entire appointment. FOURTH INCONVENIENCE I also paid for a gel manicure. The materials for the gel manicure were locked away by the office staff. So, Ive gotta go back to that God-Forsaken place and claim my manicure. Harvey was the only decent person working in there. He offered me an apology and another svc for all my inconveniences. A stylist should never: 1. Pull/Snap/Snatch a clients hair. 2. Question what the client wants. 3. Insist that the client get other services, If they are not interested. 4. Have an attitude while the clients hair is in their care. 5. Flat out refuse/ignore a request or question of a client. All my questions and requests were reasonable when getting your hair done. I paid for a service and I wanted it done professionally, not the way the stylist wanted to do it. I will NEVER recommend this location. EVER.

Ive visited this location twice for a touchup. All of the students and instructors have pleasant demeanors. I was fortunate to get a student who was experienced and creative. She did a good job on my hair. I also asked her for a pedicure. I was disappointed because it only consisted of polishing my nails. The spa chair was broken. She did not push back my cuticles or pumice my feet. When I explained that to the instructor, they reluctantly took 50% off. I dont think they should advertise that they do pedicure services because they do not provide the kind of pedicure offered by professional nail salons. I visited again for another touchup. The student burned the hair from my hairline. It wasnt until after she rinsed the relaxer out that I learned how new she was -- she had to get help barbering a close haircut! If they knew she was so inexperienced, an instructor shouldve stood by to supervise. The instructors, as well as the schools director did appear once they how badly she damaged my hair. They tried to blame it on my regular hairdresser. Someone also came over and demanded payment, claiming they were about to close their books. That didnt make any sense because it was 2 in the afternoon and the school closes at 7 pm. They seemed to be more concerned about getting their money than being concerned about how badly my hair was burned. One of the instructors came over after I was rinsed and applied something to my hair. Thats the only attempt I saw to make things right. I know that a penny saved is a penny earned but if you decide to visit this school for any kind of chemical service, be sure you get an experienced student and be sure you have instructor supervision. Dont waste your money on any other kind of service that is not related to hair.

This was my first time visiting this location. I had heard from a friend that they do a good job so I decided to give them a try. When I called to make an appointment for a simple wash and set, I particularly asked for an experienced stylist which I was assured that I would get. The stylist that was assigned to me did wash my hair and put the rollers in. Once she sat me under the dryer, she immediately started checking every five minutes to see if my hair was dry. After sitting under the dryer for only 20 minutes, I was told my hair was dry. The problem is that it was not. My hair is thick and it takes about 1hr to an 1 1/2 hr to dry properly. She then told me after taking me out from under the dryer that since I had new growth, my hair would not look good when the rollers are removed. I was told by both my stylist and her "instructor" that my hair would look alot better if the roots were flat ironed. I agreed thinking that they would know best. Instead of flat ironing just the roots, she blow dried out my hair (It was not completely dry) and flat ironed all my hair (she burned me a couple of times) and curled the ends with the flat iron. My hair ended up looking very dry, brittle (since she did not put any product on my hair before she flat ironed it) and really puffy since she did not flat iron the roots properly. When I complained and asked how come my hair was so puffy, I was told by her "Instructor" that Empire Beauty School was not a salon and that was the most I could expect from a student. Her only solution was to try to wrap my hair. I am very upset that I ended up paying extra for a horrible hair appointment. I would never visit this establishment again!!

I went in today to get highlights and facial done. They asked if I had been there. Before and I said not that location, but a different one. The wait was long but I was perfectly ok with this. After signing in and putting in exactly what I wanted done. After sitting for 30 minutes I signed the waiver and went to sit back down and only then did they tell me they couldnt do my services on me because you have to have a scalp test done. So for 30 minutes I sat there waiting so get me hair done and she waited until THEN to tell me that they couldnt. You would think they would tell you that when you get there so you dont waist your time! On top of everything it wasnt even a student who did this it was an instructor! Youre teaching those people how to perform services on clients but youre showing them a terrible way to run a business.
