I just moved to Chicago and I went to the gym daily in my hometown. Trying to find a reasonably priced gym that was close by was a headache. Gyms in Chicago all lean towards trendy fitness centers with amenities I will never use (I dont need a sauna, hot tub, juice bar, or massage parlor) or theyre class run only (crossfit, weight loss, 5-10 people per group, etc). I think group classes are great to supplement independent cardio and resistance training but theres no such thing as a one size fits all class that will target you and your goals specifically. You either need independent personal training, or to workout on your own. I needed a gym I could walk in to, say hello to the front desk attendant, work out, and walk out the door. Charter Fitness is that gym. I visited the Bridgeport location and the North Riverside location and was given a tour of both. The general manager of the Riverside location was very welcoming and professional. The Bridgeport location attendant was also very nice and professional. Bridgeport is slightly closer to me, but its smaller and while I didnt see it during peak hours I would imagine it getting pretty cramped. The Riverside location isnt enormous either but seems more than adequate, and I have yet to wait on a bench or station to use. I cant comment on late fees, billing issues, or anything related to that since I signed up to auto pay and dont need to worry about late fees. Good luck finding a gym or any sort of subscription plan that warns you your payment is due in advance. Read the plan information before you sign up, and you wont have any issues. If you pay for your utilities, its the same situation. I signed up for the $20 a month plan and can visit any of their locations which is nice. My only complaint is that they close somewhat early on the weekends, at 7:00PM. I appreciate 24 hour gyms but if no one is there to supervise it can be a problem with members letting their friends gain access to the gym for free, or to sit on benches or workout equipment and get in the way. Having a fully staffed gym to monitor use and gate non-members is necessary.

I have been coming to Charter Fitness in North Riverside for almost a year. At the beginning I was surprise how clean and friendly the staff was. The manager Jose (I believe that was his name) and other trainers would always walk around and greet all members and sometimes even offer help without a fee. In the last month or so management changed and so did the gym. Now its not as clean and there is always a shortage of towels or cleaning supplies. The staff sits around in the front instead of keeping the gym semi clean and stocked. Kinda disappointed considering how good it used to be. I understand the membership is a low price but as a manager and staff of a public place they should consider taking a little more pride in their work.

Unlike other 10-20$ a month gym, this one you get less than what you pay for. I have gone to this gym at different points throughout a day and 9/10 times there are no clean towels. At least the kje responsibility of the staff is to keep clean towels especially on the busy hours but thats another bad part of the gym is the staff. The staff either ignores you or end up just talking to each other and forget to get the clean towels even after asking. Only reason I go here is because of location but as of recently it has gotten worse because of bow busy it gets, limited equipment and horrible staff.

In most things in life you get what you pay for so I cannot say I am shocked with the quality of this gym. With that said, the biggest problems include the cleanliness of the bathroom and lack of machines/variety of machines. I also think its not fair to rope off training areas when they are not being used by others just because you are not paying for personal training. The gym has an overall dour atmosphere and lacks inspired leadership to liven things up. I would not recommend this gym to someone and besides it being inexpensive and in a populated/convenient location it has no appeal.

The staff is totally mismanaged, the front desk girl Jess has a serious passive aggressive attitude problem. Every time I have to log in, the situation becomes mired in conflict with this girl when I just want to go lift. Im switching back to LA fitness and suguest you do too if youre looking for a friendly customer service atmosphere.

Been hitting the gym 4 months now and i have no complaints. The facility is clean, organized, & the staff is friendly. It took a little time but they finally got a much needed bike rack, although a Second one wouldnt be a bad idea for next summer. 4 outta 5 cause theres always room for improvement. Keep on Lifting!

Never any clean towels available. The staff needs to be on top of having available towels instead of just hanging out and talking by the front counter. One time I visited the gym the girl was talking to the same dude from the time I arrived to the time I left and never acknowledged anybody coming in and out of the gym.

Shady billing agreements be careful what you get yourself into. Also if you miss a payment you have 3 days to pay it before it incurs a late charge. They conveniently tell you that your payment is late 3 days after you late instead of the day of... Nice gym, shady contracts and billing department...

Customer service sucks. Only one female employee who acknowledges you and says, "have a good workout" or "have a good day". all other employees dont say a word to you. Check in and theres always two employees who just stare at you while you check in without saying a word. Real awkward.

Im at this gym 3-4 days a week and it is always clean. Always clean towels and sanitizer to use. Womens locker room is kept up. Ive been to more expensive gyms that dont keep the place as clean. Can always get on any cardio machine I want, no wait. Staff is friendly, doing a great job!

I would never join this gym. the customer service is awful. The cleanliness of the gym has gone down the tubes from when it first opened. There are often no mats available use. Its unfortunate as when I first joined after they opened I believed this to be a good business.

All the front desk people suck, they dont say nothing to you as you walk in or leave. They are rude and are always talking to eachother and never putting towels for people that sweat alot. The only good ones were Israel and Jose imo.

I had my car window broken here two days ago and my purse was stolen. Please dont leave any belongings in car and watch your surroundings.
