They are quite friendly, but thats all while they are overcharging you, keeping bags of hair that you bought, and coaxing you to get a simpler hairstyle for your child. My 7 yr old daughter and I went here on 01/28/17. They charged me $130 for Havana twists that took 1 hour 25 mins to do (12:05pm to 1:30pm). I was looking at the clock. They had me buy 6 bags of hair ($40 at Alfies) but yet there are gaps in my hair where they didnt crochet hair in. The lady just filled in the front. I showed them a pic of a kids hairstyle I wanted for my daughter. It was braided into 2 ponytails with ribbons on each ponytail, but the lady act like it was only one ponytail. You can clearly see it was a ribbon on the other side. She braided my daughters hair into 1 ponytail, which was cute nonetheless but the price wasnt. I asked how much and she said in a low voice $80. It was as if she didnt want the other stylists to hear. That was the pregnant hairstylist who was shady. Needless to say I will never go here again. Its sad that there are only two braiding hair salons listed for Iowa City and I picked the wrong one! I work hard for my money and then people like these stylists at Mais just try to get over on you. I went to have my hair braided into cornrows and was asked specifically to "pick a style out of the book you want" which I did. I then specifically explained what length I wanted my braids to be. They told me the would do the style and the price would be $80. So after my hair was completed I realized it wasnt quite the style or length that I desired even though their only response was "sorry" and they still wanted their money. You would think they would have at least lowered the price since they practically screwed my hair up but that wasnt the case. I paid them them the money with no hassles or problems. However, I will NEVER return, EVER again! Personally, I think $80 is too much to paying for simple cornrows. At that price, there shouldnt be room for error but this wasnt the case with my visit at Mais "PROFESSIONAL" African Braiding.

I have been coming to Mia for over 9 years and my daughter for 3. They are always responsive and work very hard to please us. Often times in order to get my hair done I have to take off from work and the women there understands this and work very hard to get me out in a reasonable time. If there is ever an issue (i.e. a braid a little loose or not to your liking) they are happy to fix it for you to ensure that you are happy. The new shop is definitely better than their old one! I know some people complain about the women bringing kids but if you understand their close West African culture, it makes sense and something that you can come to respect. If it becomes an issue, Mia is always receptive to concerns and works hard to address them. She as well as all of the women working there have only shown me respect and kindness.

I have been going to this shop for the past five years and I have always been pleased. I always get my hair done the way that I want it and if you want your hair a certain way, explain it it to them and theyll do it. They show you your hair while their doing it and if your not confident enough to speak up, then your hair will not come out the way you want it to. They are friendly and I have never been disrespected or mistreated when I got my hair did. I also have never been overcharged when I got my hair did, they tell you the price before they start your hair and if your not sure ASK. This is the only shop Ill go to in Iowa City because the prices are reasonable and the quality of the hair is great.

I have a great time at Mais hair salon, she has been doing my hair since I was a child and shes still doing my hair tha thats been 30 plus years. No offense to any one who had a bad experience but I hope you could give her a second chance. Sometimes she gets customers that will bring their own children with them to the shop while they are getting their hair done...I think shes always been a laid back family oriented person, and thats why it carries over into her business...but positive feedback and listening to her customers concerns are important to her..so shes willing to make positive changes for her salon and future business to her customers! She very values her customers feelings and concerns!

I have been getting my hair braided here for the past 5 years. Considering what salons charge in the bigger cities and the time that these ladies spend, Mais costs are very cheap. The fact that the ladies that braid hair are allowed to bring their children to work is admirable. (considering if this were a corporation, it would be called a "family friendly" workplace). They take my suggestions and make changes midstream if I request it. As with any hair salon, you have to speak up, let them know what you want, otherwise you get what you get. They are very respectful when they do take lunch breaks and breaks and most of the time I need one myself anyway. Keep up the good work Mai!

Mai and her staff have been doing my hair for many years and it always has been done very well. Ive gone to other shops and have been disappointed, which is why I always go back to her shop. She uses quality products and always finds time to fit me into her schedule. I have no problem with them speaking their native language because they are professional enough, that I know they are not talking about me, and anyone who thinks otherwise may have a touch of paranoia. If you want to get your hair done, and dont want to be disappointed, then I recomend going to her shop. P.S. There is free parking, it is just not directly in front of her shop.

I have no complaints.....my hair doesnt hurt..nor have I lost any braids. I recommend everyone to come see for themselves. I got micro braids and only took about 8hourz for Mai to complete my head...she made me feel comfortable while doing my hair. The weave is good quality! I was able to pick as many colors I wanted to...which is included in the pricing I paid to get it done. Once again I cannot complain.

I have been getting my hair braided here for about 3 years now. I struggled with finding a great place to get my hair done in Iowa city until I found Mais hair braiding. They are a group of beautiful talented women who take their craft very seriously. The quality of the braids I get is so great and the braids last a long time. if youre looking for a place to get your hair done, look no further. I love it.
