Let me begin by saying I am a BBQ nerd and I smoke my own meats and know good BBQ. When I heard a City Barbecue was opening not far from us, I anxiously awaited it to open and we tried it the 2nd day they were open. Well, I was very disappointed to say the least. I ordered the brisket which was chopped, not sliced which is a big no no in my book and to make matters worse, it tasted like roast beef, had little smoke taste and was a tad dry. I also have the Vinegar Slaw which was ok but had too many green peppers in it and also the Gumbo which was FAR from tasting like any Gumbo I have ever had. My wife had a chicken leg and thigh with Collard Greens and she enjoyed her meal. They have 5-6 different BBQ sauces on each table and only one would I consider good and that was the vinegar based one. All the others were too sweet and their "spicy" sauce was lacking in that. There are many other BBQ joints around that I will go to before returning to City Barbecue but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and try again in a few months. Oh, we did get a free Peach Cobbler that was actually the best thing we ate so that is a plus.

I ate lunch there yesterday with a group of co-workers. Ive eaten at several other City BBQs (Indy, Columbus) so I went with a good expectation. The food was uniform with what Ive had at other City BBQs (meaning, yes, I liked it). I (and several others in my group) had the brisket. It was tasty but a bit dry. Since Im a fan of BBQ sauce, I was fine with the meat. I enjoy their sauces, and the fact that theyre availble heated on a condiment table. Thats a nice touch. I also had baked beans (very tasty and with bits of brisket throughout) and their house fries. Theywere served piping hat and were tasty but lost a bit of their luster as they cooled. My only complaint is their price/portion ratio. I had one of the lite lunch specials (lite sandwich with two full sides). The sandwich provided, not much larger than a slider, was served on a small bun with a modest portion of meat. This was a let-down to all in my group. I sitll like City BBQ but will rarely go back due to the smallish portions/price. There are other BBQ choices in the area that offer similar or significantly better value for equally good BBQ.

I love this place because the staff is super friendly. They are very popular so they often run out of hot items like ribs or greens. You may have to wait until more comes up or substitute an item. In that case the accommodate you and will give it with no charge. I am always able to drop in and grab something good to eat. My favorite items are the brisket and ribs. Very tender and juicy. My least favorite is the mac and cheese. It is a little watery and not cheesy at all. Their cobbler is extremely sweet and does not have the flaky crust most prefer. The greens, green beans, and baked beans all have meet in them so they are not vegetarian friendly. It is a good place to go for a good old fashioned plate full of barbeque.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet Steve, who was delivering a catered lunch that an office had won in a drawing. He was pleasant and passionate about his job with City BBQ. I decided to order two catering orders of 25 each for clients at tow separate office locations. I called City BBQ in Lexington (where Steve told me to call) - bot the direct line and catering line; as well as callined the Louisville "Catering Specialist". All calls gave me a voicemail, with the Louisville call promising a prompt call back - NOT!. I never received the call backs from the different numbers. I ordered BBQ from Marks Feed Store instead. SHAME ON CITY BBQ for wasting the goodwill that Steve had cultivated!

If you dont care for the flavor of blackstrap molasses, you will most likely not like the sauces or the bbq beans. I ordered the city sampler (GREAT VALUE) brisket, pork, sausage and turkey are the meats. I ordered the beans and potato salad and a pecan muffin for desert. I was given a cornbread. The brisket and pork are good for a chain, better than FDs, in my opinion. The sausage was not a Texas hot link, so dont expect that style, but was a very good smoked sausage. I personally didnt care for the turkey but think many will love it. Give them a try and see for yourself!! Side not; I mixed the "swine wine" and the "brush fire" sauces to make something more suitable to my palate.

Ive been going to another famous BBQ place since they opened, but was craving something new. Their food hasnt been up to snuff in a while. Tried City Barbecue today and this might be my new place. You order at the counter and can get a meat and sides. Sides come in single serve or pint and quarts. I had the brisket lunch combo with baked beans and cornbread and it was delicious. The brisket was thick sliced and tender. The sides were just as good. Fair prices too. Tuesdays they have rib specials for $1.25 a bone so I will be coming back to try those. Theyve only been open four weeks and were very busy at lunch time, but the line moved quick.

I have been here 3 times, and the last 2 has been for 1 item - "More Cowbells" sandwich!! Im a sandwich NUT, always searching for the next best one. Well they have it here!! Ive had so much fun with this sandwich. Not just for the flavor with all its components working so-So-SO well, but that name..."More Cowbells" really? Hint - SNL Go get yourself one today. From the time you order it and your host "rings the cowbell" to the time you sit down with this delectable BBQ creation, you will keep thinking . . . "What is with that name?" Find out, you will be glad you did!! "BEST BBQ SANDWICH IN LOUISVILLE" in my humble opinion.........

Friendly staff greets you at the door. Restaurant has a good feel and well decorated. Now the food. I have eaten here a few times and have tried the brisket, pork and ribs. Brisket had a great tasting bark and was jucy with a good smoke ring. It was flavorful. Only minor issue, which is a personal preference was that it fell apart instead of stayin whole. Pork had good crust, good smoke and was very tender. Ribs were wet ribs with a sweet smokey sauce. Would have liked to have a little heat, but you can add it. Good and proper bite and pull from the bone. Well done City!

First I need to say that Brandon provided EXCELLENT service. He truly is a star. Second the food was delish as always. I have no complaints about the food, ever. That brisket is just amazing. Cleanliness however needs to be improved. Tables were not wiped off, there was scattered trash on the floor. The condiment counter was not cleaned off and running low (I told someone at the pick up counter and nothing was done). There was a spill in the drink area that was never addressed as well.
