After relocating to Louisville for work, I was tasked with finding a new school to train Brazilian jiu jitsu. At the recommendation of my previous instructor, who happens to be a good friend of Nick "Chewy" Albin, the head jiu jitsu instructor, I decided I should check it out. On the day I decided to go I made sure to pack my gi, because like most BJJ schools, youre going to be highly encouraged to participate in class and not just sit on the sidelines. After a quick change into my gi, I was ready for class. I was then introduced to Chad, who would be teaching the beginner class I was attending that day. The class began with a warm up drill to get our blood pumping, and off we went. The energy in the room was great, as the whole group of about 50 people were putting in work. We covered a few different techniques in about 45 minutes or so before it was time to roll. Id already found that each new person I came across in class was friendy and quick to introduce themselves with handshake, and the same could be said for each new sparring partner. In this gym you will find that everyone is super laid back, but rolls hard and takes what they are doing seriously. I didnt find a single ego in the bunch, and learned of a number of members who had been training there for years. After that first class I knew I had to get in on what was happening there, and I signed up for a membership. Before the ink was even dry, I was welcomed into the "family". The people who train here surely perpetuate this idea, as all were welcoming and glad to have you training with them. Now, they also offer boxing classes, wrestling, and even CrossFit. If jiu jitsu isnt quite your thing, theyve got options, and all under one roof, so you can try out anything you want to and find out what works for you. Everyone Ive met who works there is a nice guy, and willing to help out with anything you need. If youre looking for a new gym, or are brand new and unsure about the whole thing......check this place out. Seriously. Youll sweat hard and get into shape, but youll also gain some pretty handy skills as well as gain a new family you didnt know you had. See you on the mats!

This gym is no joke! As someone who only goes around 1-2 times a week, I am seriously impressed with the instructors desire to see everyone grow in their abilities and teach at a high level. This gym not only trains world class BJJ competitors, but also gives entry-level accessibility for people who just do it as a hobby or way to stay fit. The group of guys and gals that train here are friendly and Ive always felt safe training here. The rate seems fair for how much you get access to. I always try and get people to go with me and cant speak highly enough of the great things going on here.

My son Zachary started when he was 10 years old, he had no self confidence but all that changed when he met Chewy and the other instructors. They have helped mold him into the strong young he has become. Zach is now 12 and in the 7th grade, he has the tools and self confidence to handle situations that may arise as they often do in middle school. All I can say is that thanks to Derby City I do not fear for my sons safety in school. The atmosphere at Derby City has been a very positive experience and I highly recommend it.

I have been a member at Derby City Mixed Martial Arts now for over 2 years. The experience here has been literally life changing. I dont feel like Im just apart of a gym but a family. The owner Derek Cissell is one of the best people I know and he genuinely cares about every member of this gym. The instruction here is top notch and caters to people of all skill levels in all disciplines. If your looking for one of the upper echelon MMA training gyms in the area, then look no further because this is the place to be.

I was in town for a few days and wanted to get some rolling in while away from my home academy. Right away, the owner made me feel welcomed, and the BJJ instructors both took the time to observe my technique on the moves we were learning in class. Many of the upper belts were also very helpful and welcoming. Couldnt have asked for a better experience. Its clear that the leadership sets a positive tone at the top. Outstanding facility and training environment. Cant recommend it enough.

A friend recommended DCMMA to me a couple years ago and I decided to check it out. One of the best decisions Ive ever made. In the first few months, my jiu-jitsu game improved by leaps and bounds. More importantly, I made some great friends. The culture of the gym is set by the instructors, who are all about learning and improving and not about ego. They push everyone to raise their expectations. I strongly recommend DCMMA to anyone looking to train, regardless of their skill level.

I cannot rave enough about this place. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is headed by one of, if not the best, BJJ instructor in Kentucky. The people you train with will push you and drive you to be the best that you can be. The facility is top notch and the staff will make you feel right at home. If you want to learn how to grapple, to strike, or even so much as the proper push-up, this is the place in Louisville to go, bar none.

Derby City MMA.. Is literally my home 4.. sometimes even more days of the week... the majority of people at this gym are genuine hearted and I consider them my family. You will literally find people whom love to train hard and you will grow to love each member for their personality the same as they will love you. Come train with me and the "beast(s)" at DC! My smiling face will be there to welcome you!

This is a great gym for BJJ. The head instructor, Renato Tavares black belt -Nick "Chewy" Albin, is a great teacher and a really nice guy on and off the mats. The women and men that train here are always helpful and respectful, in addition to tough on the mats. DCMMA has the added bonus of being the best value proposition in town, although youre still getting top notch training. Highly recommended.

I am in the jiu jitsu program at derby city. There isnt a better place in town to practice and learn this martial art. Whether its your first day or youve been training for years, you will not be disappointed by the high level of instruction and training partners at this school. Classes are 3 times a day, so no matter what your schedule, you can find a time to come in and train.

First time training in any type of setting outside of organized sports or the regular gym routine. I have been a member for about 8 months now and I love the flexibility in the hours in which I can show up for a class. All of the instructors and staff care about helping you achieve whatever goal you wish to reach and I thoroughly enjoy my time there throughout the week.
