Posted this on Yelp as well, such a horrible experience with this company: If I could give this gym a lower rating I would. I joined at the beginning of the year under their "No Contract" promotion as I was looking for an affordable place to to run inside during the winter. The employee that signed me up reassured me while we were going through the new member paperwork that this was not a contract and I could cancel the membership at any time no questions asked. I have been a member at various gyms over the past 16 years and have never had a problem cancelling a membership after the winter, so when she told me I could cancel no problem, I did not question it. I have also worked in the industry and have never come across such poor business ethics in regards to membership policies. Thankfully the day after I signed up I was read through the paperwork from the day before. It was then I noticed something seemed off about the membership. Immediately I went to cancel in person at the gym and that was when it began. I was handed a slip of paper with an email address and phone number that I was supposed call. After calling I was told I had to email my cancellation request first, which I did right away. I was told I would be contacted by EOB regarding the cancellation. Unfortunately that did not happen. Getting in touch with the people that could actually cancel my membership was nearly impossible. Over the course of a month I called well over 100 times, left numerous voicemails and sent around 30 emails. Whenever someone answered the phone, they were unable to approve my cancellation and was always told that the person who could actually cancel it was unavailable or not in. I seriously questioned if that person exists. It would also take days for emails to be answered and never would my questions be completely answered. After a week of attempting to contact them I decided to jump through the cancellation hoops that were listed in the fine print under their "30 days free" promotion. What all this entailed was attending my free personal training session, attending a fitness class and coming in to work out 15 times. After completing all of this I would be able to cancel the membership for a fee of $75, which I would like to point out is not free. Every time I went in I took a picture of a different part of the gym so Id have the time stamped evidence on my phone that I went in for a workout. After all the trouble I had gone through I did not want to take any chances on them stating that I had not gone in for enough of the workouts. I am extremely happy I had began moving through their 30 day cancellation requirements because 20 days into my membership I was told that in order to cancel I would have to pay around $600. Avoid this gym at all costs! Spend the extra money to go to the Y or even the Spring Lake Aquatic Center!

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The equipment is fine and Id rate cleanliness as ok. One MAJOR complaint is billing!! Do NOT give these people your credit card info......EVER! I read other negative reviews about billing, and against my better judgment, gave them my credit card info! I signed up for a one year membership, paid in full at the time of signing, never received a paper copy (in spite of asking on numerous occassions) of the contract. And now, one year later, I do not want to continue using their facilities and they are still billing me with UNAUTHORIZED charges. When you call the Norton Shores location, I was told that upon signing up with them, I was informed that membership reverts to month to month after your one year contract. NO I was NEVER told this.....EVER. They then deflected me to the corporate office who NEVER responds to your inquires. I am now stuck with having to work with my credit card company to get charges removed and processed as fraud. Even after communicating, via email on numerous occassions that I was pursuing their charges as fraud charges, I have received ZERO communication with them. If I had not encountered the billing issues with them, Id give them 3 to 4 stars. Once again, do NOT give them any credit card info because you WILL encounter issues later on down the road. Beware......

Do not do business with these people. I was told by the sales associate when I signed up that I was signing a one year contract. Since Ive been paying for the gym for 2+ years Ive decided to cancel. So I made a phone call and was informed I could only cancel through corporate. So I called and talked to "Emily" I told her I signed a 1 year contract and would like to cancel. She told me I was a "Liar" and I should have read the contract because it was for 3 years. Extrapolating from that reply, I must conclude that Family Fitness has no moral qualms about letting their sales associates lie about contract duration. And then sign up clients for a longer one instead. Lesson learned I suppose.Furthermore Contracts are set up for auto renewal by default. So if cancellation isnt timely, you could be stuck in another three years after youve only bargained for one.I talked later with another associate to resolve the issue she was much more helpful. Family Fitness seems to allow their employees to be unprofessional, condescending and churlish. I wont ever do business with them again.

I have been a member of Family Fitness in Norton Shores, MI, for almost 3 yrs now and I just love the classes that are offered. The Zumba class is fun and its great exercise plus its offered at varied times so it fits my busy schedule. They have a variety of other classes as well such as step and strength, Tai Chi, cardio kickboxing and yoga, just to name a few. They also have a separate womens workout area and tanning is only $1. The only negative thing I can think of is that there is not a shower area. The staff is friendly....especially Sam and Felicia and when you join you get a free personal training session..

If anyone is going to sign up for a gym membership DO NOT get one at Family Fitness. They are horrible! They have you sign to become a member but doesnt tell you that youll be locked in for 4 YEARS. I went to cancel and they said if I wanted to cacel I would have to pay the rest of my contract up front! What! If I dont want to go to their facility anymore i am not going to pay 2 years worth of gym access to not have access!!! I am not paying $368 up front to not have access to the gym that I dont want to go for. That makes no sense! NEVER GET A MEMBERSHIP THERE!!! They are soooo shifty.

My Husband and I received a call from this place. When we researched the number it brought up a company called Ernies Auto Sale with the same number and address. When we called the number to see what they wanted they said that our number had been randomly picked for a 30 day free membership. When asked how they got our number they were very defensive to answer and when asked about Ernies Auto Sale they hung up. I will be reporting them to the FCC as well as PD, the City, and any other agency that deals with this. DO NOT answer the phone when they call. and just report them.
