The often used argument in defense of this gym usually goes something like: "But its only $10 a month! What do you expect!!" or "You get what you pay for!!!" Let me tell you why this argument is totally invalid. Planet Fitness is a nationwide franchise gym. I joined Planet Fitness as a Black Card member in California 2 years ago. Now, this gym was awesome; it was clean, the machines were well-maintained, the staff were friendly and the place was never crowded. There were the slogans everywhere reminding that it was a "No Judgment Zone" and the staff took it seriously, therefore the clientele took it seriously too. There was a relaxation zone and massage chairs for Black Card members. Bottom Line: People came to work out; not to gawk at others. $20 for a membership to THAT place was an absolute steal. Fast forward to the present and we can see the polar opposite in the franchise here in Astoria. 1. Shortage of working machines. The place is constantly PACKED. You almost have to fight to grab a machine, theres so many people. The number of cardio and weight machines are woefully inadequate for the amount of people working out here at any one time, which leads to people lining up to use a machine. Case in point: Theres only ONE torso rotator and theres always people waiting on it. And not only is there a shortage of equipment, but many of their machines are in some state of disrepair. 2. Other people. Some of the people here work out maximum maybe once a year. So dont be surprised when someones grandma shows up in a mu-mu and proceeds to break the hell out of one of the machines. Then theres also total meat-heads who crowd the free weight area and dont do anything but admire themselves in the mirror. Then theres the creepers who spend the whole time staring at women on the treadmills. And then others are just straight scary. True story: one time my girlfriend walked by some dudes doing jumping jacks in the middle of a hallway and was threatened with physical harm by one of them for getting in the way. Yeah, what DO you expect for $10 a month? 3. Facilities are terrible. Want to wipe down your machine before use? Too bad; paper towel dispensers are broken. Need to go to the bathroom? No toilet paper. And the locker rooms? Full of thieves. Ok, enough said on that. 4. The staff doesnt care about the philosophy that make other Planet Fitnesses great. Theyre not friendly and they dont enforce gym rules. That "Lunk Alarm" they use to keep people from acting up and intimidating other members? They dont use it. People wear their Timberland boots to the gym and slam weights on the ground; they work out in the walkways and block people from getting past. Staff also dont care that the relaxation/stretch area for Black Card members is usually occupied by a molester guy named Mohammed giving personal training to young women.. And the massage chairs always have some elderly people sitting in it. The price is the same for every Planet Fitness gym. Why should this gym be any different? Is it so hard to fix the machines? Keep the creepers/perverts/criminals out? Keep the toilet paper stocked? Save your money and go to another gym. But if you absolutely HAVE to join Planet Fitness, consider the gym in Jamaica. No, seriously, JAMAICA.

This gym used to suck. Mostly it was terribly managed by a guy who preferred to chat and look cool rather than do his job. He was even bad at that because there is nothing cool about chinstrap shaved facial hair. Now the place seems to have a couple new managers and it has been an improvement. Still the same ratio of filthy clientele but what do you expect for $20 per month? If you are going to choose rock bottom prices you will have to deal with a few of the dregs of society. To "A Google User" who is complaining about applying for a job: Maybe you would be hired if you learned how to write. Reading your review was both hilarious and grueling at the same time. Go back to middle school and pay attention this time. If you write like you are stupid you will probably speak and act like you are stupid. So that would be a good start. Apparently Ben Lin is the previously mentioned "A Google User". Ben, I enjoyed your response about how I am ugly and old. Fortunately I am a straight man so your opinion means less than nothing to me. Based on your previous review of the gym though, your childish insults regarding the user icon was perfectly fitting for your intelligence. It really doesnt matter what I do because there is no way my salary could match "a intern job in a office in the city." Now my standing in life has been severely impacted by the opinion of a person who cant even accomplish a job at a gym. It does come as a surprise though that you graduated middle school. Otherwise, I really wouldnt consider yourself bilingual. Maybe one day when you achieve a practical use of both languages? That is when you are considered bilingual.

Went for the first time today. I usually go to Blink Fitness. Lets start with the good things about this place. Good: Staff was courteous. I wasnt given a tour of the place and had trouble finding the locker rooms. Nonetheless they were courteous and respectful. Machines were good. They work as intended, plenty to use and two floors of machines to work out with, and only one was missing the padding. Bad: Water Fountain- Only one water fountain and it has no filter. For a gym this size it is completely unacceptable. Ive seen gyms half this size with two or more. There should be a bottle filling dispenser as well. These machines are relatively inexpensive costing $500 to $1000. Traveling from the third floor to the first for water is also a hassle. Cleaning towels. You have to spray the disinfectant on the towels and then wipe the machines. The problem with this of course is that the towels are too absorbent. I saw very few people using them. Most gyms use alcohol wipes for this reason; its faster, easier, and produces less waste than paper towels. TVs: The channels are "fixed" to specific stations only. While there are about 18 TVs in the gym, they should allow variety to which channels people can be allowed to watch. Massage Machine: Ill admit this one is a toss up. Even though its "Unlimited", they restrict it to two 5 minute sessions per visit. Its great that they have it but still make sure to include it in the fine print. Overall this gym needs improvements in the water fountain and cleaning areas

Planet Fitness Astoria Experience I was a member for 5 years, needed to cancel my membership due to job schedule changes and got the run-around (out $45.00) so if I can stop 1 person from joining justice will be served. I overlooked alot for $10.00 a month Cleanliness - about the same as the subway, any McDonalds or public place in NYC. The mens locker room has roaches. Clientele - mostly cool never had a problem although more than a few (what appear to be homeless) men use showers and hang out in the early AM hours. One guy who was dressed in street clothes would hang in the free weight area and take pictures of the women working out. I saw this many times and went to say something but the creep was friends with the guy working at the desk. Staff - As long as you dont have a problem you are OK when you do they are defensive and completely unapologetic, low end of the customer service scale. Equipment - Most of the machines work, free weights are always scattered all over the place, handles are kind of slimy could use an occasional wash. Summary - its Ghetto you get what you pay for NYC style I posted this review on Yelp 10/9 and got a message from someone at PF on 10/10 to call to see what they can do, I called and got the same unapologetic manager who said "tough luck", they must be making so much money they can afford to be this bad.
