I have been part of this gym for a year now and all in all, the space isnt terrible. It is frustrating how frequently they dont have towels or how often the air isnt working, making the downstairs area incredibly hot and stuffy (with a strong not-so-pleasant odor). The equipment is good and usually everything works. I could have given this place three stars, but my issue has been with the billing. This is now the fourth time they have messed something up. My first issue was back in March when they decided to cancel my subscription without even telling me, citing that I hadnt paid; when in fact, one of their associates input my cc # in the system incorrectly. They told me they had to charge me again for a reactivation fee even though the fault laid with them. Second issue - they forgot to bill me and decided to cancel again when it was their error. I received a phone call from them letting me be aware of this on the last day I had to rectify the situation, I had them charge the previous months they had missed and for some reason, my subscription was cancelled again. Again, they claimed they had to charge me another activation fee. When I confronted the manager, he told me they would still charge me, but give me a $10 per month discount to offset the cost of their error. Third issue - they didnt apply the $10/month refund. Had to call and have it corrected - which actually wasnt a problem because my account was noted, but they couldnt refund the amount they had already charged for some reason. Now - I get a call saying I havent paid in months even though the billing is supposed to be automatic and I needed to be charged (my cc has a practically a zero balance so there was no issue with my card). Again, they werent aware that I was getting a $10 discount and the woman was incredibly rude to me saying I was only mad because they were calling me about missed payments. She changed her tune after I told her to check the notes and she apologized. I was supposed to receive a call back to make sure everything has been fixed and I havent heard a thing. Ive tried calling to speak to someone, but the manager seems to be nonexistent. I know of two other people I go to the gym with who either dont get billed or have had issues. I think the issue is a bunch of kids are running this place with no clue what theyre doing. It sucks because my friends go to this gym and I would like to work out with them, but I cant deal with this anymore. Bottom line, find a better gym.

Edit as of 9/29/2016 Since a few months ago, this gym has seen some big improvements. They added new equipment and hired an extra staff member to clean the bathrooms and facility. Every gym will always have their caveats but for what you pay, this is one of the best gyms in the area for the money. Previous March 2016 review Pros - spacious and large - multiple quantity of the same equipment and weights (3 bench presses, 2 to 3 sets of free weights, 2 squat racks, 1 cage, 1 3d rack, 2x paired cable system) - early and late hours - parking relatively easy (street parking and theres a public paid lot across the street) - mix age group, ranging from young 20s to older 40s and 50s - showers are almost always equip with soap and shampoo cons - patrons dont re-rack their free weights; weights are hard to find and sometimes spread across the gym - patrons tend to hog certain machines that has multiple uses for other exercises (using the cable machine but not allowing others to do pull ups) - bathroom smells and not always clean - somewhat distant from the subway Would I recommend this gym? Yes. This nysc is spacious, has multiples of certain equipment and equipment not found in other locations (tractor tires and ropes). Hours are great and parking is not so bad. The gym does have some caveats. The patrons here dont tend to rerack their own weights, can be rude and hog the equipment. The mens bathroom tend to smell and there is a 10 min walk to this facility from the train station.

I just go here for the free weights and cardio machines. It has pretty much everything I would expect from a med/high priced facility. The gym is mostly clean and has a mixture of brand new and some dated equipment. For the weight lifters out there everything you could possibly need is at your disposal. Mind you I go to this location during the day, typically between noon-3pm and Ive not had to wait to use a piece of equipment yet. I dont use the showers or saunas so I cant attest to those but the bathroom is very clean for the most part from what Ive seen with plenty of lockers. Plenty of space for stretching and abdominal work too. Even have a cross training work space upstairs right when you walk in if thats your thing. Ive never taken any classes or done any personal training with this facility so I cant speak on their behalf. My only complaint would be that the dumbells/barbells/plates are kinda all over the place and rarely get re-racked. If you are expecting a pristine facility near perfection like all these other reviewers seem to want then you will most likely find something wrong with this place. Always plenty of towels when Im there as well. Ultimately if youre like me and only want to use the hit the weights hard and then use the cardio machines afterwards then this place is fantastic. I was even able to do an introductory 30 day membership for only $30!!

My review will echo Kellys below. I also was scammed by NYSC, Astoria. They had a promotion last summer for college students. I thought this would be an ideal birthday gift for my daughter who would be in for the summer. She goes to school in Wisconsin. I remember choosing NYSC for this very reason. They had a membership tailored to this clientele. Perfect, right? After my daughter left New York, I began to get harassing phonecalls from NYSC wanting her to continue her membership. I patiently explained that she did not live in New York as she was in college in WI, and indeed studying in EGYPT last fall, so we would not be interested. Fast forward to March-April when I began receiving harassing daily phone calls from a COLLECTION AGENCY to collect an additional $54 on top of the $150 I paid for my daughters membership for July and August. I never received a bill from NYSC nor did I receive any notices from any collection agency. They wanted credit card info which I refused to give. I sent them the $54 just to get them off my back. Needless to say, I am furious, and will do everything I can to spread the word. Kelly, Im with you!

This is my first internet review ever because I need to warn other people about NYSC! They operate with deceptive practices and will scam you if given a chance. I asked about a free trial and was signed up without being told that my trial would become a membership if I did not cancel it. Two months later, I returned to the club to sign up (not realizing they had already signed me up and been charging me). Though I was taken care of by the same membership consultant (who remembered me), she gladly signed me up again. I realized theyd been charging me twice and have spent weeks trying to get my money back. In all, they made $700 off me --- $400 from a complete scam! Beyond that, during my extensive chats with customer service, I experienced many instances of bad service/accusations that I somehow knew I would be signed up twice. I despise being treated like a fraudster by an organization that is stealing my money. So much for customer service.
