I was a brand new social worker in 2014 and was in a hurry to pick up a student on my caseload due to a crisis that needed to be handled. I had been on the phone with the owners multiple times throughout the day about having to pick up this student and identifying what role I played in his life. Not only was the bus extremely late, the owners (husband and wife, along with what I believe the wifes mother) were extremely rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional. I became upset because being I was in a hurry and had constant communication through out the day;yet with a very bold attitude demanded my work ID. There attitude was unprofessional and triggering for me being I was a new social worker, had a crisis that needed to be handled at that time, and did not seem to recall a single conversation we had through out the day. Once they received my attitude for being so incredibly rude and unprofessional, all 3 "owners" became outrageous. Stating they would not release the student to me and his foster mother had to come get him, (which was physically impossible, keep that in mind) and proceeded to tell me how they were going to "report me" and that "I clearly needed a new profession." I then as a new social worker felt as if I had made a huge mistake and began to perfusely apologize. Not one of them was receptive to an apology and only further insulted me, as a human being. Not as a social worker, not as a young adult, but the characteristics that make me a good social worker. Now that I have continued social work in a different agency and area; I realize what horrible, selfish, and disgustingly rude these so called owners were. They hindered my self confidence at 23 years old, I cant imagine how they make the children that attend their programs daily may feel. Furthermore, I would like to conclude that I am a damn good social worker, I help children, families and their communities. I fight for them, for whats right so people like the owners of this day care facility dont take advantage, look past or look down upon those in different situations. Some may see that they were doing their job buy rudely demanding to see my work ID. As a social worker I felt overlooked and disrespected that out consecutive conversations and plans were forgotten over an hours time and because of them a crisis wasnt handled when it needed to be. So to the owners, next time your nose is in the air and youre looking down at hard working, selfless employees, remind yourself; you are not in their shoes. You are not a social worker.
