Ive been with this location from the opening, when it was new, clean and taken care of. Currently yes they are fixing some things....finally removing carpets from the locker rooms (whoever designed that brilliant idea should be fired) and using tile. Not sure what they will do with the lockers, the place has had a problem from day 1 with theft. There is little to deter someone from stealing anything since at best the front desk is staffed, not a single other staff member walks around the floor which equates to the equipment being ALL over, if it even exists. There are regularly signs from the police department warning of the locker room break ins. There were rumors even one set of the cleaning crew (they have gone through tons of people to clean the place) were part of the racket. Its odd they go through so many cleaners, overall the place is dirty. Yes, you see them clean things, but I dont know that they really know how to clean. There should be not one surface in that entire gym that should not be cleaned/touched at least once a week. The place is a breeding ground for MRSA. They have finally changed out much of the old cardio equipment, so that is a plus. I believe the existing equipment is being kept as they change out the old rugs on the gym floor. Weights are everywhere, there are literally NO 10lb weights, clearly the wonderful members and/or staff take them home and sell them is the only thing I can imagine. Dumbbells are everywhere. Of course partly this is due to the members, but since there is not a single staff member to walk around the floor and police this the place is always in shambles. Yes, they do pay someone to put things away, that happens at best once a day, but even that person really cannot keep up due to the volume of members who could care less. It is a huge gym, however, I feel that what changes they are doing now (while positive) will not last long. Whatever management they may have there, clearly has no clue how to run a lemonade stand let alone a gym. No concept of scheduled cleaning of every square inch. No concept on having staff other than those at the front desk actually walk the floors to keep the place clean. The trainers, who may or may not be LA Fitness (perhaps 3rd party) are no better as they dont put anything away either. One would think they would encourage putting things away but why bother, just like the members. Some of the front desk staff is friendly, I think considering they have to put up with thousands of members and complaints they are decent. I imagine any gym on LI could face similar problems, starts out good, clean and gets run into the ground by members who think someone should clean up after them, coupled with the lack of a cleaning staff that actually knows real cleaning. Also be ware of their membership practices, they are of course salesmen wanting to maximize their sale. Just make sure what you are paying for is really a deal.

My family were charter members of this facility. Over the years it got worse and worse. First there was the rash of thefts in the locker rooms. Nothing was maintained. The lockers simply fell apart and it was hard to find one that was intact. Then the shower stalls fell apart. But worst was the idiocy of the swimming pool policies. There were lanes labeled, "walking, slow, moderate, fast". Of course this was never adhered to, and the "walking" lane turned out to be the lane where senior citizens decided to hold coffee clatches. Instead of walking, people would just stand there and chat. Since my exercise involves power walking, I could never do that in this lane. When I would move over to another lane, I was told I was NOT allowed to do power walking in that lane, even though I was moving faster than the person "swimming" in the fast lane. When I would ask the moron who was supposed to be the life guard (who spent most of his time with his head buried in his iPhone and not watching the pool) what the difference was if I was walking at a fast pace vs. swimming at a slow pace, and I was not interfering with anyone else, he had no good answer but told me those were the "rules". When I complained to the manager du jour about this policy, I was told there was no such policy and I could do my exercise. That lasted for that day. The next time I went, it reverted back to the "swimming only". Of course the next time I went back there was a different manager du jour. Ironically, after I decided to try another LA Fitness; the one on Rte 110 in Farmingdale, I found out that there was absolutely no problem with my power walking in any of the lanes, and I have gone there ever since. The problem with the club on 110 is that about once a month the heater which heats the pool crashes and burns which results in both the pool and whirlpool being closed for days at a time. The same problem with maintenance exists at the club on 110 where the locker rooms are in terrible shape. At the one on 110, there was a spin dryer in the mens locker room to dry out bathing suits. It broke about 6 months ago and was never replaced. LA Fitness did however do a fine job of putting up a new facade on the building so that it looks quite nice from the highway. It would be nice if they paid a bit more attention to the interior. I wish there was another club on LI that I could try, but unfortunately, like the US Post Office, there isnt another competitive club with an olympic pool shallow enough to do power walking and water aerobics in. LA fitness is now the club one loves to hate.

I never really take the time to rate things but when I saw the amount of people dissing my gym I had to step in and explain a few things. Im not sure if the people rating have been to other gyms that cost just as much as LA fitness but dont even have half of the amenities. 1. Lets stop talking about parking because I go to the gym at all times and there is more than enough parking available. On the busier times the spot may be far away but lets be serious people - you are on your way to work out, are you really complaining about the walk to the front door?? They have 3 HUGE lots!! Plus a smaller one right next to the front door that is available on the weekends. 2. A lot of the front desk staff are usually busy and Im not going to say I am well greeted at the door but whenever i have a question they have been able to answer me. If you are really basing your work out on the greeting you get upon entering the gym then you have other issues. 3. The mens locker room - I have never been in there but is it a big surprise tht sweaty men smell?? Plus there is a sauna and one of the locker rooms is connected to the pool and gets humid. Heres an idea- use the other less humid locker room! I do! 4. Security?!? No one has ever stolen from my locked locker. The gym is usually busy and people are usually in the locker room. I think that someone cutting a lock off would have a hard time being sneaky about it. Also, you are paying $50 a month to use a huge facility. If you want to wrk out in a high security place then pay more. 5. Are you really surprised that they are trying to sell you a membership?? Its their job- everyone knows a free pass isnt really free because they are going to call you and try to offer you a tour. They are sales people!! With that said I want to talk about what I do love about that gym... The gym had great hours and billions of machines so I never have to wait to work out. Anytime I feel like going home I see 50 other people working hard and I stay. The gym has a cleaning crew that I always see around so I know I wont see protein shake bottles and paper towels everywhere. There is also ample amounts of paper towels and sanitizer. The upper management have been extra nice to me about guest passes and they always help me with a smile. Its a nice place to work out if thats your plan. Sounds to me like some people just like excuses to not go to the gym. If you are looking for a few excuses, feel free to scroll through these half assed reviews. ... Im off to the gym now. :-D
