Before walking into this gym, I had just seen Pumping Iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger. This documentary was set in the 1980s at the height of Arnolds time as a bodybuilder defending his title for the 5th time as the greatest bodybuilder in the world. He was up against up-and-coming Lou Ferigno in a grueling battle that could only be resolved by sweat, muscle, steel... and a few dietary supplements. Scenes feature grunting men moving massive amounts of weight in nondescript warehouses, Lou Ferigno crying, and Arnold comparing the post-lift pump to an orgasm. I say all of this because this gym is locked in the period, the atmosphere of Arnolds rise and I absolutely love it. When you walk in you will be hit by a few things. 1. Painful red colored padding accompanied by metal plates older than my dad. 2. Signs in all caps screaming at you to put weights back and to not touch things 3. Neon lights lining the ceilings as if it were a force field sealing in the scents and sights of the 1980s 4. The owner of the gym beckoning people to add him on Facebook with several strategically placed signs (yes, theyre in both bathrooms too). This is in no way a perfect gym, but thats the point. Do you need a tetanus shot? Yeah, probably. But heres the thing... Heres why I gave it five stars: you cant hide behind the polished nature and lavish amenities other gyms provide. You cant hide behind the pretense of a $35/month membership too busy to go to after work. You take a look around and youll see the extras in Pumping Iron: strong, dedicated individuals who go to the gym not to flex the glamor muscles, but to fully enjoy the rigor and the pump, Arnold calls it something else. Also its cheap as hell, buy it one year at a time.

The Price of the regular membership here is the ONLY positive thing about the gym. A lot of the equipment is out dated, the gym is constantly some what dirty, and something is always broken. Many of the cable machines have weights that stick, almost all of the machines have had name tag/ instruction plates removed, and when you inform employees youre made to feel youre inconveniencing them by talking to them. There are only 2 urinals in the mens bathroom and one was out of order for almost 3 weeks before it was fixed. Then, instead of fixing up the equipment and updating a few things they went and added on a new, and nice part of the gym but they charge you money monthly to use the only part of the gym that feels like it wasnt built in 1980. Beyond disappointed in this gym and i urge you to avoid it at all costs. There are WAY to many options around the area to settle for this gym.

Joining this gym was such a disappointment. Its gross. Bathrooms and showers are old and dirty. Id heard that they renovated them since the last time I joined (years ago) but all they did was paint. The fixtures look corroded and the ceiling tiles are stained and sagging - especially in the womens fitness area. The lockers are gross. Bottom line - everything just looks dirty. Dont know why they would expand when it seems they cant maintain the facility they have now. I just cant imagine enjoying getting healthy in a place that feelings like a failing old department store. I also had the same experience as the previous poster - they did a bait and switch with me on the price of the membership and the employees were acting really sketchy.

I was a member here for 3 years. I moved out of the area and was told over the phone that I owed $20 for my last month and cancellation fee. A week later I was called and told that I owed $39.00 more because an employee had told me incorrect information. I spoke to the manager, Ray, who told me I was lucky that I didnt have to pay $10 more for the following month then he handed the phone back to his employee. I do not recommend going here. Like I said I was a member for 3 years and while I had a horrible experience canceling my membership for this gym, at no point was the gym impressive, customer friendly, convenient or clean.

Machines are old, Air circulation is bad and kind of dirty compare to Planet Fitness and Court Jester Athletic Club. Their monthly price is OK but there are setup Fee, annual Fee and cancellation Fee. Need to pay for some of the classes. For that price, I would suggest Planet Fitness because of the cleanliness and less hassle about they plan and cancellation. In terms of facilities and classes, I would suggest Court Jester coz the environment are ten times better! Plus, no other fees at all. You can cancel and renew your account anytime and as many times as you want. Also, American Fitness hours are not as good as the others.

Its a nice gym especially for the price. No complaints about staff or cleanliness. Even on crowded days, equipment is available since there is so much of it. I tend to stick with the womens only area since the general area has an odor to it (needs better ventilation perhaps?). The womens only area needs a separate place for women to do their stretches, crunches, etc because they seem to scatter their mats all around the floor and not care that they are blocking walkways or machines. Also, parking could be better - people obviously need a paved lot with spots marked, otherwise they do not know how to park!

Very unclean, equipment isnt kept up well. Ant infestation in the bathroom is a summer occurrence. Also very shifty about the gym contract. MAKE SURE YOU READ IT if youre going to sign up there. Honestly, youre better off at planet fitness, even if there is a little less equipment. I went to renew my membership last week and I called about pricing only to receive four different answers. Then upon arrival I was given a 5th different answer. They are scraping every penny they possibly can.

I would have to say one of the worst customer services Ive ever experienced! I forgot my key card and was scolded by the front desk clerk like a child. The machines at this gym are constantly dirty, it smells and there a re urinal mats on the floor! I have been a member at this gym since august of 2013 and I am finally fed up with the lack of upkeep and effort on the part of american family fitness I will be switching to Planet Fitness in the spring

I called a couple times to get information and the employees were very short an seemed irritated that I was asking so many questions. They all seem to have different answers to the same questions. Not very organized. The daycare is OK. Nice people but small room. The children must have a membership. Even if the are only there once a month. The price for the year is good, but Id pay more for better customer service.

This is probably the worse gym experience Ive ever had as far as billing goes. 1. If you move away, good luck trying to cancel your membership. 2. If you do cancel early, prepare for a crap storm of hidden fees. 3. Hope that when you do cancel, its not with the owner since he seems to have an attitude problem. You can find a way better deal at other gyms, without as many hidden cost and work-arounds.
