The walls are nice. It is a good setup in there, but I wont be going back due to the customer service. I signed up for a rock climbing class through Portland Community College. I showed up on the first day where the only thing that happened was that everyone (a class of around 20 people) got belay certified so they could climb at the facility. The first issue I had was on that day. They knew a large class was coming in for this and they had only one employee there to do all of the belay tests for 20 students. NO ONE got to climb aside from the brief test where you climb a few feet giving the correct vocal prompts to prove you know them. What a waste of a day... That was my only day there. Later that week I was in a car accident that totaled my car and injured me badly. I had to pull out of all of my courses due to my injury. I requested a refund from Stone Works due to the situation and told them that I would be back in a later term to re-take the class. They flat out refused. I pushed the issue. Then they tried to partially refund me charging me for the cost of one day (which was about 1/4th of the total!) and in the end they charged me one "student priced" day, and that only after calling multiple times until I got a manager and then emailing medical proof of my injuries to the owner of Stone Works. The whole process left a bad taste in my mouth and really didnt appreciate the way they treated me. Youd think having the entire left side of your body smashed by a sedan would be a legitimate reason to not be climbing rock walls, but they fought me every step of the way over around a $40 refund. The sad thing for them is that I would have back, but now I never will.

I have had 2 bad experiences here now but didnt write a review until the second time. They are terrible with customer service. I brought a friend in who is newish to climbing but has only top-roped with belay bars. This person has bad anxiety and while lowering me for the first time, had what can only be described as a panic attack because of the difference in friction with the bolted hangers vs belay bars. We had been in the facility for less than 20 minutes including the 5 minutes that it took the owner to give my friend their belay test. My friend was too distraught to continue climbing so I had them go change and I went to talk to the owner. After describing the situation I asked the owner if I could get 2 return passes for another day and that I did not expect to get the few bucks back for the shoe rental. He stated that it is not their policy to give return passes. After a little back and forth between the two of us he said that he would give me a return pass and thats it. I left without getting anything because I was so pissed off. The owner has no emotional intelligence and is not a nice person to deal with. I recommend going to any climbing gym other than this one. I would give them zero stars if this let me.

I bought Five-visit climbing punch card of this company from Groupon. I tried some other rock climbing gyms and want to find the best one for my kids. I usually brought three kids and let them play at one time using one card but punched three times. Because the deal is "Five-visit climbing punch card with gear rental included". But this Gym said one card was for one person five times. Its kind of like cheating. They highlighted the deal details:Five-visit climbing punch card with gear rental included but they didnt highlight "one person one card." Other gyms sell their coupons with clear title “ ......package for one or for two". If it is just five visit card it means just punch five times no mater one person or two persons. I admit I should read all of the deal page. It is a lesson. But I still dont like the way they try to fooling us to sell the tickets.

Ive had nothing but good experiences with these folks - the gym is small but fun and challenging with a pretty damned awesome traverse that spans the every wall and the entire floor layout. The staff and owner, Juan, are easy going, Juan us a plethora of information and seem to always be ready to offer sound advice when asked - generally the whole crew are fantastic folks. To the reviewer that made a comment about Juan not being emotionally intelligent - Im not sure what happened that seems to be a gross misstatement in my experience with him. After taking a movement clinic with Juan and climbing in their gym multiple times I would highly recommend them - great great folks.

I think the 4 stars they currently have are fair. The walls and routes are thoughtful and creative, but as a business, there are drawbacks in my mind. There is this incredibly bright lamp (blindingly so) situated above one entrance to the cave that destroys your vision for a moment if youre exiting or climbing a route leading to it. I also had a negative service encounter. Most of the staff are great. They seem to tend more towards cultivating and maintaining the rugged climbers culture as opposed to having straight business excellence as a facility for a focus - which definitely isnt a negative, its their flavor and certainly draws that authentic dirtbag climbers culture.

Great place for bouldering, but didnt have the opportunity to top-rope. If I recall correctly, they only allow for gris-gris belaying, and after I explained that Ive been climbing for a decade with my other ATC device the instructor looked at me as if I were insane for still using one. Additionally they wouldnt allow for me to get certified on the gris-gris to belay my partner with no experience, albeit the technique is nearly the same. Oh well, I do understand its for safety, but definitely hampered my day. Seemed like a fun place, would like to go back again if I didnt live conveniently close to other gyms in Portland.

Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon with my wife and 5 year old daughter to give the kiddo a chance to see what rock climbing is like. The gym had an easy going, friendly and family friendly vibe. Spent a few hours teaching our daughter the ropes and doing a bit of bouldering and top roping. Overall we all had a really nice time at Stoneworks. Purchased a pair of punch passes so we can get a good feel for the place and see how entertained the kiddo is with the sport. No complaints with our first visit and we are all looking forward to our next visit!

The gym that got me out of the house and hooked on climbing!!! When I think of Stoneworks, the first thing that comes to mind is the community. Everyone is so cordial and helpful. Matt is really involved in teaching the high school team and you can tell hes passionate about climbing. Absolutely. Ill be climbing over at Smith Rock and see their van nearly every time - thats passion man! Stoneworks is my home gym and even though I now live in Boise, when I visit PDX, my first stop is usually Stoneworks!
