My roommate and I took the Street Jazz class Tuesday night on November 8th. In speaking after class, we both discovered that we had wanted to pack up and leave without finishing, and were just too polite to do so. Heres why: 1. The instructor never introduced herself, never introduced the class, never asked anyone if they were new/ had dance experience/ knew what street jazz was. In fact, she said nothing at all. We didnt know she was the instructor until she started fiddling with the music. On top of that, we werent sure we were even in the right class until it was almost over. The instructor said absolutely nothing to us through the entire class, good or bad, and instead focused all her energy on her core group, the five who obviously were regulars. 2. There was virtually no explanation of the moves before or during the sequences. Im sorry, but this is not a level 3 advanced dance class where you are surrounded by professionals. This is an open class, where people like myself and my roommate want to be able to step in and try something new without feeling like total jerks for the time and effort expended. If you are going to do open classes, they better be open to various skill levels. 3. Health and safety issues!!! The last move required leaping into the air and throwing yourself on the floor. Now, for the record, Ive done that before, in dance classes and martial arts. You. Must. Walk it Through. You DO NOT ask people to throw themselves on a hardwood floor without SOME practice in HOW to do so without injury. Compound this stupidity with the fact that we were never asked to sign a waiver and I foresee a possible big ugly lawsuit drowning this little studio in litigation fees. Vega gets two stars because they comped our class (perhaps after seeing our obvious unhappiness). I do sincerely hope their other classes are better, as it is nice to see small business succeed. That small business better be worth it, though, and I was not impressed.

Diversity, fun, and a good challenge--thats what you can expect to find at Vega Dance+Lab. Ive been coming here for years now, but I still remember my first visit like it was yesterday. I walked in feeling nervous because I wasnt a seasoned dancer and my previous experiences trying to take dance classes in Portland had all resulted in finding myself in a room with professional dancers or 14-year-olds, in other words, total embarrassment. Vega was exactly what I had always dreamed of. The classes are typically brimming with a diverse mix of adults from all age ranges; as a 30-something, I feel like Im the median age. Other students are generally welcoming and non-judgmental. The teachers are knowledgable, creative, and kind, yet they always push you to be your best and move past boundaries. The choreography and workouts are bold and sometimes challenging, but in a way that makes you feel proud of yourself when you leave. At this point, I think of Vega as my place of dance worship. I know that I can walk in feeling stressed out, and leave feeling elated. New dancers (and those who have never taken a class in their life) my advice to you is to come in and try a beginning class or workout class with an open mind. You will probably end up falling in love like I did.

Im not a professional dancer, so I cant speak to what this place is like compared to other studios. But its WAY better than any gym aerobics class, and is a lot of fun. Ive been to one class so far and am hooked!
