Ive been a member at X for 2 years now, and have been consistently happy with their service. A two-story gym conveniently located at Walnut and Ivy in Shadyside, they offer cardio room with treadmills and ellipticals (1st fl) and a few machines (bike, step) plus a large weights/free weights area (2nd fl). Membership is flexible (I pay $55 month-to-month, with no-penalty cancellation at any time; you can also put your membership "on hold for up to 3 months consecutive if youre going to be out of town or whatever) and includes towel service. Also included are a wide variety of fitness classes, including Pilates, yoga, spinning and various Les Mills brand classes, which take place in a large front room or a smaller studio in the back. The large number of classes plus the fact that its open 24hours Mon-Friday (when closing time is 9 pm) makes it convenient and easy to work out (no more excuses!). A staff member is always present during business hours, but otherwise traffic in and out is not monitored. All you gotta do is swipe your keycard before/after working out. I have found the service friendly and helpful: one time I even lost my keycard but they let me work out any way, and didnt even charge me the standard $5 replacement charge! The X gym is going through renos right now, which will bring some changes, so this review might have to get updated. I personally am hoping to see some recycling bins around (no recycling yet). The owner/manager was responsive to my eco-suggestion, however, and hopefully will green operations soon.

The gym is fine, I never had a bad experience working out and it was rarely crowded. However, the whole pricing scheme is set up to scam you out of as much money as possible. I havent belonged to many gyms, I hope this isnt standard because it is horrendous here. I tried to freeze my account, I was told that a notification of a freeze needed to go in by the 25th of the month before. So I lost $55 for a month I wasnt in town for. When I moved, I tried to cancel my account over the phone but I was told I needed to come in to do this. I came in, on the 22nd of the month, thinking that freeze/cancellations had the same policy. NOPE! Cancellations have to be in a month before. So I froze my account for the next month and then cancelled the following month. My roommate doesnt live in Pittsburgh anymore and has no intention to return and they will not let him cancel his account. My wallet was stolen elsewhere and I had to cancel my credit card. My card was declined and they charged me a $15 fee. Better yet, they never notified me, had I not asked an account question I would have never known and would have been accumulating more and more charges. I explained the situation and they were nice and removed the decline fee. This was months ago and it still hasnt hit my account. Ive asked about it twice and havent seen the credit...

I joined X Shadyside this past summer while in Pittsburgh for an internship and without a doubt it was the best investment I made over the three months. I was big into their group fitness classes, particularly body pump and buti yoga. I saw atleast 6 of their instructors in action, all if which were very knowledgeable and encouraging. I recommend Lisas body pump to everyone for a challenging workout! Ontop of all their awesome classes, the staff is friendly and so are the people that go there. Everyone is on their own fitness journey, and I rarely felt judged while in a class. In the weight room, I was a little intimidated, but downstairs they have another small weight room which leads to a hall way lots of people go to lift weights privately. This is usually where I would go stretch after spending time on the stair stepper. All in all, great place! If you live in the area I highly recommend. Others at my internship with the L.A. Fitness route, and I could tell they didnt look forward to their workout as much as I did!

I have been a member for two years and have been pleased with everything this gym has to offer. Additionally, Ive found the staff to be very friendly, the facility clean, and the equipment well maintained. That said, I also thought Id respond to some of the other comments below that seem focused on billing/price complaints. Overall, I would offer that your experience is going to be entirely based on your own individual perspectives. If you are looking for a private gym, in the city, in Shadyside (up and coming part of town, lots of young professionals and grad students), within walking distance, and where the staff knows your name - then there are only two or three options and I and personally I considered X Shadyside to be the best. Conversely, if youre looking for a cheap big box gym (PlanetFitness, LA Fitness, etc.) then I think you need to be prepared to drive because you arent going to find that anywhere in Shadyside, Oakland, or Squirrel Hill.

This gym is absolutely fantastic. Its perfect. There are tons of different classes (for my wife) and the weight equipment is in great condition (for me). It felt a bit small at first, but I never had to wait for any equipment, even at peak hours on Monday. The locker rooms are also super clean. Is it a little more expensive than most gyms? Sure, but it keeps out the riff-raff, plus its locally owned, so the money will stay local. If you live within walking distance, I highly recommend it. A no-brainer.

Its all about location. I know a lot of women that go here and love it, because its a hop skin and a jump away from their Shadyside home ... sure, its not perfect, but a gym is about working out, losing weight, and staying in shape. If you live in Shadyside, this is your best bet, but if you live in Squirrel Hill perhaps, try the Pittsburgh Boot Camp in the Squirrel Hill JCC.

I love working out here. The memberships are priced very well for the city, and classes are included. They offer a great variety of classes, and the community is very supportive, respectful, and fun! All of the employees are very sweet, and I never feel judged or shy to workout. Definitely check it out. Such a gem in our Shadyside community!

The gym is usually very full and it doesnt have a lot of equipements. The other bad thing is that the existing equipments are not distributed equally, for example in the first flower there are many more treadmills than other types of machines. High price for not a great gym. Only the location is convenient.

Im a young professional who was lured in by a membership discount and stuck around for about six+ months. The ventilation and air conditioning is horrible, especially downstairs. Both upstairs and downstairshe smell really badly too. Lots of meat-heads as well.

Since they dont put their prices online, figured it was worth posting here. $55 per month for a student, $49 joining fee. Ill stick with Planet Fitness at $10 a month (everybody) 4 miles away.
