I grew up in a gym and my family became very close with the guys who owned the gym so a personal, clean, well equipped and uncrowded gym is what I look for. Those are the criterion I judge by. Personal service: Below average at best. The staff is indifferent mostly, but that is to be expected from college kids who get the job so they can make money and do homework. But honestly youre at the gym to work out not hang with staff so thats fine with me. Cleanliness: Good. The bathroom showers need work, but for the most part the lockers are clean and the gym floor is well kept. No complaints in this department. Equipment: Great equipment, just not a lot of variety. All new machines and the cardio machines are phenomenal. Weight rack is standard, but there arent a lot of leg machines. The freestyle room is awesome and allows you to get a dynamic workout. That room is the reason I joined the gym. Crowd: Never crowded except when theres a Zumba class so all good here. Summary: Its not a regal gym crawling the nouveau rich and overweight businessmen feigning the afternoon gym session as a lazy afternoon in the spa so they can tell their wife they went to the gym. I feel Eco has a great balance between Globo gym and Average Joes (where are my Dodge Ball fans?). Its not snooty and unwelcoming but it doesnt stink of Rocky 1 and old gym bags. The free spin and yoga are great amenities that I indulge in when my schedule allows. Overall, Eco provides the best casual gym on the peninsula. If you want to get your as kicked and require an hour nap after every workout then head over to the new Crossfit gym on society. Cheers.

Ive had it with this place. Theyre basically keeping bank hours at this point. The only problem with that is that banks pay YOU to use them. I highly recommend calling ahead each and every time youd like to use the facility, because theyll typically find a reason to be closed. Apparently paying one teenager to sit at the desk is a cost they cant afford. Beyond that the ball-sweat smell that permeates the lifting area and the locker room are a continuous issue, were down to one mat in the aerobic area, and aforementioned teenager does nothing when that fully clothed sunglassed idiot shows up and starts running around the gym with weights above his head and then shakes his toupee sweat out like a golden retriever. Just for fun, lets also mention last week when a trainer and his client were doing a lat / plank circuit (because thats a thing), and the trainer utilized the ONLY lat bench as a lounge chair for 40 minutes. After politely waiting for a while I came over and informed him Id like to use it and he told me he was with a client and that there were lots of other machines I could use. Not sure why he was wearing nylon head to toe if he was just planning on having a goddamn tea party. Maybe find another gym.

While I can say I never set foot in the gym I did specifically join this establishment for the sole purpose of going to their yoga studios. As a lover of Bikram Yoga I found inspiration, peace and tranquility in Kellys classes. She is an exceptional person who will guide you through your practice with a powerful and soothing sequence. Now living in Washington D.C. I miss her classes even more. I also must give Cathy L. extreme props for her sequences. These women are extraordinary. As for the supposed cattiness or suv driving moms- ignore it- you are after all going to a gym. What difference does it make who you are surrounded by? The gym is clean and updated and while I do suggest you get to the classes 20 minutes early it is worth every penny. Namaste!

My family and I were members here for about a year or so when we lived in Charleston. Worst gym ever. They had this whole series of emails about how they were going to charge people for towels because towels were .50 each and they were losing about 100 of them each month. If you are challenged by math, that is $50 per month. I told the owner that I was leaving and taking my membership money elsewhere and that it was a lot more than $50 per month for our family. So, by losing one member, they lost more than what they were losing in towels. Also, terrible attitudes coming from staff there. About the only good point was the childcare. The young ladies there were always pretty nice.

The customer service just seems to get worse and worse. I am not sure if it is the economy or bad hiring practices but the Eco experience is not what it used to be. If you enjoy being greeted by unsmiling front office staff, constantly having to ask for soap to be replenished, a shortage of towels and general stinginess - then Eco is the place for you. I would be out of there but alas the membership has a ways to run. Buyer beware. I have heard the gyms at MUSC and East Shore Athletic are a better bet.

The customer service in the place is truly appalling. I have had constant problems with front desk staff over no soap for the showers, reluctance to provide towels (even when you have paid the additional fees), impoliteness at reception with disinterested staff. I am counting down the days to end my membership and join another gym. There just seems to be a cultural of arrogance and general rudeness.

Eco downtown is somewhat of a small gym compared to others in the greater Charleston area. However, it has everything that an avid gym goer could ask for. A cycling room, general weight room with plenty of free weights and also an aerobic area with a punching bag and rope hanging from the ceiling. Gets a little crowded around 5 oclock but most of the after work crowd is gone by 6:30.

Its very overpriced ($15 per day, $35 for a week, ?? for month). But it has all the weightlifting equipment I need. The customer service wasnt too bad, and the gym was not too dirty.

Nice people, renovations are top notch, seen real improvements in equipment up-keep and cleanliness. This is the place to be downtown right now.
