Their local area Estimator responded to me in a timely fashion setting up a convenient date / time to inspect our hail damaged roof. He came out on schedule, listened to my concerns (e.g., should we replace our 13 year old skylights out of our pocket even though they were not broken), inspected the roof, explained to us the damage as well as the cost to replace the damaged roof. We were already interested in upgrading to impact resistant shingles & he advised us of a rare Winter special deal to them by a particular shingle manufacture that gave them significant savings on the impact resistant shingles. He carefully explained the financial aspects including the fact that though we have replacement cost coverage, standard practice is for insurers to pay depreciated value, but allow one to recover the difference if it costs more which ours would. He explained to us that once the job was done & we had signed off on it, we would pay them the depreciated amount while they worked with our insurer to recover the difference between that & the replacement cost. Once we got the second check, then we would pay them the balance. We liked what we heard & signed an agreement for them to replace our roof including an upgrade to the impact resistant shingles. Within a few days, we got a call from their scheduling person & agreed on a date that was late that week. We received a letter prior to the work date advising us about prep (moving cars & anything right by the house). The roofing crew came on the morning of the agreed on date & started right away. They removed our old roof including a no longer in use DirecTV dish loading everything into a dumpster they had put on our driveway. They then proceeded to put down the protective layer after which they started installing the shingles. As they worked, they replaced the various vent tubes & caps, painting them the right color. The also replaced our 2 power vents & turbine likewise painting them the right color. After the installation was completed, they cleaned up the work areas, then used powerful magnets to ensure that they picked up any roofing nails that had fallen into our yard. The company inspector assigned to our job had been by easier & we talked again at the end of the roof work. He opened a work order to have an electrician come over & wire up the replacement power vents. After the electrician had done that, the inspector came back to our house & carefully looked over the work. After that we went through a long check list to be sure that they had done everything that needed to be done. We were satisfied & signed off on the inspection. As originally agreed, we paid the initial amount that our insurer had allowed for the roof & the appropriate people worked with our insurer to get the paperwork done to get us a second check to cover the actual replacement cost of our roof. Throughout the process, everyone that we dealt with, communicated well, answered every question that we had, & volunteered anything that they believed we might not have thought to ask. There was never any pressure & they were quite content to allow the paperwork process to occur yielding us a second insurance check before they expected us to pay the balance. We have been super happy with this experience & have already recommended them to multiple of our friends who suffered damage in the 2 recent hail storms.

Its taken months to get this company to fix the mess they made of the roof and the damage to my ceilings. From day 1, they played hardball; refusing to even acknowledge that there was something wrong. They sent bills and dunning notices, they even sent a bill to my insurer saying the work was done when $3000 in gutters hadnt even been installed yet. They wouldnt listen at all. The first few guys just talked right over me and never heard a thing I said. It took a complaint to the BBB before they would even listen. The man who came to fix my ceilings made a mess of my master bath. There are paint splashes everywhere, even underneath the door handles. He was angry because he had to paint the entire ceiling because he used bright white paint and the ceilings were a grey-white and his paint didnt match. So he vandalized my bath. Today the company returned and the employee was yelling and playing hardball again. The gutters are to be installed today and hes insisting that I give him full payment. Hes also trying to add addl charges to the contract for changes that were agreed to before I signed the contract! Theyre the ones who notified my insurer that the work was done and I called my insurer to tell them that they lied- the work was not done including the $3000 for the gutters. The insurer told me the check would be voided so I tore it up. The jerk from Lon Smith insisted that I had the check and he wanted it. He tried to say the gutters wouldnt be installed unless I agreed to pay today. Seriously? If they hadnt lied to my insurance company in the first place, and if they had done the work properly, perhaps I might of paid out of my own funds knowing the insurance co would pay me back. However, these people are so arrogant and intimidating, that Im not giving in at all. They seem to think that they can do whatever they like and get away with it. They picked the wrong client to abuse here. I dont like intimidation tactics and I dont like sloppy work. Its taken 5 months of grueling arguments to finally get done what should have been done in the first place- and they are still insisting that none of it had to be done. Seriously? They put a vent on the wrong side of the house, they put nails in the ridge line causing it to pucker, they laid the valleys so badly that the shingle pattern was all wavy, they didnt protect any of the plantings and they still havent cleaned up the planting beds. They put nails through the white flashing and then sealed them with some messy black gunk. And worst of all, they still insist that all the work was done properly! Yes, theyve finally fixed it but wont acknowledge that they were wrong. What hubris! Because of all of this, my next door neighbors (who have a Lon Smith roof that needs replacing after the hail storm) have gone to another company and on the next street over, every single home refused to use Lon Smith after they saw what happened to me. If you use this company, be sure you have the web site address for the BBB. Its the only way to force them to fix their mistakes.

Lon Smith was a disaster for me, it could be that they have been overwhelmed by all of the business opportunities that the hail storms in the spring generated for them, but they completely mismanaged the work done on my house. First of all they failed to set expectations for me by telling me that the job would take one, maybe two days maximum. They did not explain that they were going to have to subcontract out the sky light replacement. It took nearly four weeks to wrap this one to two day project up because they completely mismanaged the skylight replacement. I could never get a straight story from them on whether it had been done or not. Whenever I would call in to ask about progress on the skylight replacement I would get the hot potato treatment, no one wanted to take ownership of the problem. They claim that it has been replaced, however, the skylight replacement company evidently came out and replaced the skylight without asking for permission from me and they did not leave a note or anything to suggest that they had been there to do the job. I have to accept on faith that it was actually replaced. Lon Smith sent inspectors out to my house three times. I never met the first inspector, he came out and "inspected" the roof while I was not there. The first inspector was fired, evidently, but no one from Lon Smith called to tell me that a new inspector would be working with me to make sure everything got done. They subcontracted the roof replacement out to another roofing company, I know this because the roofers placed a sign in my front yard and it wasnt Lon Smith, I took the sign down after the first day of the job, when I came home from work on the second day, they had placed their sign back up in my front yard. I agreed to let them replace my three wind turbines with passive vents, I let them up-sell me on three additional passive vents to be placed elsewhere on the roof, when I came home on the second day I could tell they were wrapping things and were about to leave. I noticed that that were three vents sitting in my back yard, still in their card board containers. Apparently, they were going to leave these vents in my back yard! I asked one of the guys in the crew if they were going to install the vents, and he told me that they thought they only had to install three vents. They got on the phone with someone at Lon Smith and confirmed that all six vents needed to be installed and so they climbed up on my roof and very quickly installed the three extra vents. Stay away from this company, they are a poorly managed organization.
