Ill admit, Im a sucker for cheap haircuts. Ive had the same simple haircut since about the first grade. I used to frequent the $5 haircut joint on 7th East near downtown Salt Lake City, and they always did fine. So when I saw this place near my work, I thought, why not? I stopped in on my extended lunch break, signed in with the receptionist...and waited...and waited. I sat and waited as one of the barbers went to every other employee in the building, inquiring if they wanted to make a run to Jimmie Johns for lunch. Soon they were sending people in who arrived AFTER I did. I inquired with the receptionist, who went to speak with a supervisor, who came out and told me they could have me taken care of within the next half-hour. I politely informed them I would have to return the next day. When I returned the next day, I was recognized and seated soon enough. It was explained that my hair would be cut by a barber student, under the supervision of an experienced barber. FORTY-FIVE minutes later, the guy had yet to break out the electric trimmer, instead relying on a comb and scissors to do the job (to his credit, part of the delay is attributed to him being distracted by the same guy as the day before, going around talking about Jimmie Johns). He took some off the sides, but I had to ask him to take more off the top. Eventually, he let me know he was going to have a supervisor sign off on the job. I guess the guy got his signature, but I never did see a supervisor. By this point, Im late to get back to work and just trying to get out the door. Its been a couple weeks now. My hair looks something akin to Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters, right after he gets frisky with the Gatekeeper, who is under the spell of the evil goddess Zoul. Come to think of it, would have been better AND faster just to drive downtown to the shop on 7th East.

In December of 2009 I had my last hair cut at the "Barber School" and I will not be back. The Hispanic man who cut my hair nicked the top of my right ear with the razor while cutting around my ear. I was very upset at this as he seemed to enjoy clipping my ear and showed no remorse at his error. During the previous times that I have had my hair cut here, my haircut was not inspected properly by the supervisor of the school (the brain) and I had to go to the cameo college of essential beauty to get my hair evened out. With "The Barber School" they go to great lengths to show you videos about their establishment, the history of hair cutting etc and post large cardboard comments on the wall from supposedly satisfied customers. By this act they are merely trying to compensate for the poor haircuts as performed by the students in training that, as I mentioned previously are often not inspected. In the future I will go to the cameo college of essential beauty where for the same price (6.00) my hair is cut properly and thoroughly inspected by a supervisor.

I was skeptical at first but I had a really good experience. The there were 2 or 3 instructors constantly walking around and supervising. My barber had only been studying for 3 months but he was very professional. At one point he wasnt sure how to proceed and he asked for an instructors help rather than continuing and possibly committing an error. He apologized for making me wait but I was glad that he had sense enough to ask for help. In the end the haircut turned out excellent and looks a lot nicer than many haircuts that I have received at high paying barbershops. I give four stars only because I asked to tip my barber and they did not accept my card. They lady at the desk told me I could go across the street to the gas station and get cash back. So if you plan on leaving a tip just make sure you bring some cash.

My boys and I have come here monthly for about two years. The last three times have been very frustrating. Previously, there were instructors helping the students to insure the quality of the cut. They have now expanded and have more students then instructors for guidance. It has taken about two hours per hair cut and no instructors to sign off on the haircuts or assist. I had to fight the barbers the entire time to cut my boys hair better. Seems like you have lost sight of whats important and Im sorry to say that we wont be back. I know this is a school and its only $5, but its not worth it if the haircuts are more damaging then helpful and it takes two hours of your time. We have always been excited to help the barbers start their career, but the quality has gone down hill quickly.

I attend this school. Of course u must understand that we are students perfecting our craft but I have yet to see a bad haircut walk out of our door to be honest. I know the majority of the students all of which are great aspiring barbers. Theres always positive vibes in our school. The instructors are great and always willing to help. When u come into our school to get a cut dont feel shy or timid to tell us what u want or if we could fix something for u. Be vocal. Were all welcoming to the idea of improvement. I get my hair cut every week from a student whom Id personally follow after school into a new barbershop. Every time the cut is perfect to say the least. Great students great instructors and great energy whenever u come into our school and I know this for a fact

I love this place!!! The hair products they sell and smell so good, and are so good for your scalp and hair, and decent price! The managers and the owners are so nice! and they remember you when you come back and they are amazing to my 4 year old that gets nervous getting his hair cut! And they are fast getting you back, ( I go around early afternoon time on Fridays.) and decent time getting the hair cut done too! and of course it smells amazing in there with the cologne and after shave smell. Its the best $5 i could spend on a haircut and a good experience for me and my children.

I am only giving four stars because it is somewhat hit and miss, but most of the time I think you get a decent haircut. If you want a professional cut, you need to pay for it. These are students after-all. However, most of the time they do a good job and if they mess up some, the instructors fix it. But I suppose some bad haircuts may slip through. The main thing I would caution you is it can take a long time for some of the newer students to cut your hair, so if you are in a rush to get a quick haircut and dont have an hour to spare this is not the place for you.

The price is great, but as with any school, results vary based on students abilities. Their is also a huge disconnect from their requirements that students appear professional compared to how they talk and act. They dress like professional and behave like high school kids. Last time I was there, a young kid was getting his hair cut while students AND an instructor dropped F-bombs and made jokes about getting laid. I reprimanded them, but as I walking out the door I heard someone yell the F-word loudly. I would never bring my kids here.
