Really like the place, really love the people. Been a member there for nearly 6 months, and we have never - and I mean never, had a bad experience. Felt like I needed to write a review after reading a very poor review, but actually happy to see that the type of attitude displayed in the review feels more at-home in another gym. Let me tell you a little about what you will find at this gym... From novice, to intermediate to master level, the climbers here are all friendly, encouraging and positive. If you want to climb and just climb after work, being more to yourself - you can. If you want to climb, and be part of a community - everyone is accepted. The point? There is no pressure from anyone to be someone you are not... Where the owners, management and staff probably understand personal attacks, I know those of us who enjoy their mentorship, as well as the constant changing of routes is appreciated. If you have a child wanting to learn, I have talked to other parents there who swear by the work that they have done with their kids in camps. If you use the facility as a part of a weekly balance to other activities like we do, the change of pace, to the incredibly knowledgable staff have helped us with muscle group exercises to those paths that will challenge the grey matter most for critical thinking. Ultimately, you get in life what you put into it, and if you try this place - wether you climb or not, you will not be disappointed. Cheers ~

I debated writing this review or not. I decided I would, based on the fact that i would have liked to have known this info before going. The gym is right off the highway and in a generally good location. The staff is very friendly and were really excited to talk to me. Although not to knowledgeable, they were happy to help with any questions i had. Most seem like very new climbers. The whole reason I went was I had read on their site about this huge new facility, how is was the next best thing, and how much better it was going to be from other gyms in the md/va/dc area. I guess I allowed myself to be fooled because this was not the case. First their walls are not "50+" feet high, there might be one wall that scrapes the 40+ mark but the rest are well within 30-40ft. The bouldering area is quite small and unimpressive. They talk about how much higher they are than their competition but I didnt see it. Their site said they have climbs as high as 5.14c, but I didnt see anything higher than 5.12. The setting was very sub-par and climbed awkwardly to say the least. I dont think i would have had such a negative taste in my mouth if they didnt use such false marketing. Ill stick to my gym where I pay the same rates and get 3 gyms instead of one.

I visited Vertical Rock because I was in the Manassas area for work. After I left the gym I realized I forgot my gear, roughly $150 worth of items (5.10 teams, chalk bucket, brush, carabiners). I called about 30 minutes after I left when I realized I forgot my stuff and since I was too far to drive back I called them to let them know. I told the staff member exactly where I left my gear. The person on the phone was able to find my gear and told me they would hold it in the lost in found...great! Since I live in the DC area it can be about a hour drive with traffic, so I was able to get a friend that lives in the Manassas area to pick up my gear. So, I called Vertical Rock (week and a half after my visit) to let them know a friend was picking up my stuff. The person on the phone told me they couldnt find my stuff and recommended I call back when the "normal" staff was in. So I called the next day and they still couldnt find my gear, so I left my number for them to call me back so they could look for it when it was "less busy". They never called back... Needless to say, I wont be coming back.

As an experienced climber from Utah/California I was impressed at how many routes were available and their height. however, I did not get to climb any because the buddy I brought didnt pass the belay test. Fair enough. but they would not refund my money so that I could just be a belay for my buddy. They told me to ask someone there to belay me if I wanted to climb or I could pay extra for staff members to belay me. I thought, no big deal well get my buddy certified. Have to take 2 hour course for extra fee to learn to belay?? Im sorry, but everything you need to know to belay safely can be taught in 10 minutes or less, 20 if you want to be thorough. In addition, very expensive gym. online prices are different from the prices listed at the gym-18 vs 20 dollars. most of the staff members were sitting around behind the desk not doing anything (why would I pay them extra to belay me, again?). The majority of the staff also did not seem knowledgeable about climbing or how the gym was run. not impressed by the management style of the gym. Unfortunately, will not be returning.

After randomly finding this gym a little a more than a year ago Ive been hooked on climbing. This gym offers you a very friendly environment to workout in. A really great place to just swing by, do some easy climbs and just hang out as well as coming in to do a hard core woorkout. No matter what level youre climbing at, youll always get support from climbers around you. Routes are changed regularly. Thir incredibly friendly staff is always there to answer your questions and theyre very helpful if you happen to come across things like loose holds(which is always a possibility, not something to complain about). Outdoor climbing classes are great as well, Ive done both the top rope and lead class outside. Both was a success. If youre really in for getting your butt kicked, you should try the Rock Ready class. It will leave you very satisfied if you like a hard workout. They also provide a great "kickboxing" class. Im very sad that I have to leave this gym due to personal reasons, Im sure gonna miss all you guys!

I was in the area for work and decided to stop in for their Wednesday night Meetup. Everyone was super nice and I was impressed with the number of people who showed up looking for belay partners. While not one of the bigger climbing gyms I have been to, it certainly makes up for its size with quality route setting and varied surfaces. They have two nice looking cracks, a bunch of slab of various grades, dihedrals, and aretes. I climbed two really fun 10s that were delicate slabby climbs and about as close to the real thing as you can get indoors. The only reason I am knocking them down a star is for safety practices. They didnt make me take a belay test. Yes I am a competent belayer and have a bunch of experience, but they dont know that and it puts extra responsibility on me as the climber to evaluate random belay partners. Yes that is always my responsibility but it helps me make decisions when I trust a gyms vetting process.
