This is the last of the DMV clubs Ive visited; even been to Columbia a few times before Reston. This club feels so dark and drab (like Centreville) immediately when you walk in. The cardio treadmills are all Woodways; there is no Technogym here. Cardio area is, per usual Life Time standards, oversized and with plenty of choices. The "lifting floor" is kind of sad with very poorly maintained machines, cable stations and pulleys on the Technogym machines on the boundary of said "lifting floor". Earlier tonight, I had to throw away two carabiners that were hopelessly broken. I always get an evil eye from some newbie when I do that. Keep in mind theres no way to get management to replace broken (see dangerous) pieces of equipment unless theyre gone. Also, carabiners are about $1.75/each. So, I sincerely doubt itll break any persons bank. Hell, Ive even bought carabiners for one club in New Jersey because I was sick of the lazy management not doing diddly squat. Members mean well in their workouts but it was quite a scene of comedic horror for the two hours I was there. I saw curved back deadlifts, jerky/janky movements that resemble the starting of a push mower, various monkey-like workouts, hip thruster bicep curls and just horrible form overall. Stop by this dimly lit, way out of the way club to be horrifically entertained during your workout!!! Laughter guaranteed!!! The mens steam room smells like a budget seafood market and is filthy. Take a look at the ceiling and youll understand why this is. Showers are morbidly disgusting, though this also has a lot to do with slob/pig members that were either born in barns or dysfunctional countries that know not what hygiene and respect are. This paragraph addressing another review: As for Life Time not giving military discounts; it is right along their business practice to not give discounts to anyone except employees! A small 10% discount for active and retired personnel wouldnt be such a bad idea. In different regions, student discounts and other reduced rates are available.

Amazing facility - but not the best for the a.m pre-work workout. The other members dont seem versed in gym-floor etiquette, and monopolize the equipment. Trying to work out at Life Time Athletic in Reston in the morning before work is kind of like the same experience you have trying to get a lounge chair on a luxury cruise ship, or at the beach or pool at a nice resort.... selfish people reserving the equipment with their towels/phone/keys/water bottle/gym bag. And the staff doesnt in any way engage to ensure everyone can get their workout done in a timely manner. For example, out of 3 squat racks 2 members usurp 1 squat rack each for the entire duration of my workout - over 90 minutes on the gym floor and the same 2 people on the same 2 squat racks. Anyone else who wants to use them for squats or deadlifts etc. have to work in on the 3rd rack. The staff makes no attempt to communicate any time limits or the concept of *sharing*. In fact, on many mornings, one of the "Alpha Trainer" staff members is using the 3rd squat rack during the same a.m. pre-work window! Also, when equipment breaks, its down for a minimum of 3 weeks. It has beautiful pools and a whirlpool, a Spa and a Cafe (none of which I use). It has great locker rooms - probably the best differentiator from other local gyms. But if you cant get in your desired workout in the precious time before work.... is it worth it? Wasnt for me.

For you lap swimmers: the pool areas are pretty nice. They have an indoor lap pool and and indoor rec pool. However, a lot of the "rec" people wonder over into the lap pool to frolic and walk around the lanes. They have a sign that says " rec pool better suited for water aerobics" but no one adheres to that suggestion. So at busy times getting lap lanes can be hard. In general no posted rules for the indoor are enforced so you see people dunking their sweaty bodies in the pools directory from the pool-side sauna. They dont swim, they just dunk and get out. I have seen toddlers in diapers in the hot tubs. I dont go in the hot tubs. The outdoor pool is very nice. Again, there is a lap area and a rec area.It is wise to come at times that are not busy to avoid classes and the people who jump in the lap lanes to cool off, hold the wall and kick or discuss their favorite book. I guess they like the lap lanes to avoid chaos in the rec area. If you come summer Saturdays/Sundays at prime time the outdoor lap pool WILL be a zoo.It is more of a country club with lap lanes than a health club for lap swimming. All in all good pools for lap swimming if you can go at off hours. The people in the pool area are great. Just wish they would enforce a few of their own basic posted rules. Heres a new one: a person swimming in a burka! True. So much for pool hygiene.

I joined the gym mainly for using the pool and swimming laps. I read some of the comments regarding lap swimming and one person hit the nail on the head (web guru). The message was posted nine months ago followed by a seemingly appreciative Lifetime management comment. However the issues are still remaining. Nothing has been done to rectify the issues. Lap lanes are taken up by swim classes. You can hardly find open lanes. I stopped by on Friday at 7PM thinking for sure Id be able to find a lane, only to find that two lanes were taken up by swim classes. People still dunk their sweaty bodies in the pool after they exit sauna. Rules are not enforced and signs are not posted to educate people and to prevent them from doing that. I asked a Lifeguard once and from his response, it was obvious that he had never been trained on this subject. The gym equipment is good and they have done improvements on group classes but if you want to join for swimming be prepared to share the lap pool with the swimming classes, sweaty person from the sauna and the walking grannie and chatting buddies extending their legs every now and then while holding on to the wall....

Went there today with a one day trial pass. I can see the attraction, big, clean, lots of amenities and equipment. They have both and indoor and outdoor pool with slides, spa, various classes for kids etc. It was generally a nice place. There were two things I had issue with. One was the over priced food by the poolside cafe. Not only was it overpriced, it was not even heated through. When I brought it back, they did give me a new plate but claimed that the corn dogs were not undercooked but rather, it had cooled down already. Um, excuse me, Im pretty sure I can tell the difference between food that has cooled down and food that is hot on the outside but cold on the inside. Second the Family locker room is way too small. Its abvious that families with young children make up a significant portion of their clientele, but the Family locker room is way smaller than the womens or mens locker rooms. There are times when the Family locker room got too crowded. It also doesnt help that people seem to use it as a shortcut to the pool.
