My 8-year old has been attending Universal for about a year. I really appreciate Mels philosophy on earning new belts. The number of months it took my son to go from a white to 50/50 belt in jujitsu helped teach him patience and perseverance - both qualities that are developing in young boys. Mel has a very patient and understanding demeanor with the kids, and they respect him and want to please him. All the instructors at Universal are great. It may a bit of a drive for those of us in Vancouver, Battle Ground, Hokinson, or Ridgefield, but its well worth it for a great martial arts experience.

The owner, Mel, has created an ego free and fun learning environment. He has done so by surrounding himself with instructors who care about you learning the fundamentals in a safe setting. Mel, Ray, Johnny, and Sasha are a few of the instructors to talk to if you decide to swing by. As it was told to me when I started, they "cant offer you a destination, they can only offer you a journey." I will continue my journey with the guys and gals from Universal. I have made several life long friends here and am always looking forward to my time on the mat.

Universal Jiu Jitsu is a great school. The staff is incredibly friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. Its a great place to learn a sport for WHATEVER your purpose (fitness, sport, MMA, etc.). The owner, Mel Locke is a class act who will make you a better fighter and person just by showing up. I left another school and came to Universal after checking out a number of BJJ schools. I couldnt be happier and dont ever plan on leaving. Come check it out. Youll find great instruction and a lot of great people who leave their egos at the door.

Great gym! Family and sport oriented, great for children, teens, adults of all ages, clean, friendly students, excellent instructors, and well-versed in many styles of martial arts. The owner and head instructor, Mel Locke, is very humble and has a great teaching style. This gym is great for beginner and advanced students!

I have been going there for four years now. The team at Universal is great. They offer many classes covering many topics, however focus on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Its a great environment for the entire family to learn the art of BJJ.
